Microsoft Sees 31% Increase in Earnings as Xbox and Kinect Soar

 Microsoft says its’ fiscal third-quarter revenue grew by 13%, with the entertainment

and devices division seeing $1.94 billion in revenue (a 60% increase year over

year).

 Microsoft said it had a revenue of $16.43 billion for the quarter that ended March 31,

which beat what analysts had expected: $16.19 billion in revenue (a 12% increase).

 Net income was up 31% from last year at $5.23 billion- or 61 cents share. Analysts

had expected 56 cents per share.

 Microsoft Business Division revenue grew 21% over the same quarter in 2010 to

$5.25 billion.

 Server & Tools revenue grew 11%, the fourth consevutive quarter of double-digit

growth.

 Even though Windows 7 is the fastest selling OS in history, revenue from the

segment was down 4% in the third quatrer. Microsoft said that was in line with the PC

trends.

 The Windows Division saw revenue of $4.45 billion in the last quarter.

 Microsoft noted that PC sales were down 8%, and netbooks down 40%.

 The Online Services Division revenue grew 14% to $650 million, primarily driven by

increases in search revenue ( however, high spending on promotion saw operating

lossses of more than $700 million).

 Microsoft said online ad revenue grew 17%, driven by search and display growth.

Google Gets Sued Over Location Tracking

 Two women from Michigan are sueing Google for $50 million for privacy violations.

 The women also want to put a stop to the company from tracking user’s location.

 Last week, Google announced that it does collect location information which includes

GPS locations and timestamps.

 According to Google, this information cannot be traced and can be turned off by

disabling the GPS.

 This lawsuit is similar to the one recently filed in Florida against Apple.

Sony Officially Reveas Android Tablets

 Sony held a press conference this week in Tokyo to reveal their upcoming tablets

products.

 Sony will make its initial presence in the tablet market by introducing two devices, the

S1 and the S2, both running on the Honeycomb platform.

 The S1 will focuc more on Sony’s Qriocity feature and is shaped like a folded

magazine. It will use a Tegra 2 processor and will have customized features that will

set it apart from other Honeycomb devices.

 The S2 will be a dual screen clamshell tablet device that comes with a 5.5 inch

display capable of resolutions of 1024x480 pixels, designed to fit easily in your

pocket.

 Both devices will be PlayStation Certified, which mneans it will possess the same

gaming capabilities as the recently relesaed Xperia Play smartphone.

 Sony expects to release the devices this fall in the US.

Expedia’s Q1 Revenues Jump 15%, but Earnings Drop

 Expedia reported that first-quarter revenues increased to $822 million from $717.9 million a

year earlier, but net income fell.

 The company reported that net income fell to $52 million, or 19 cents per share, from $59.4

million, or 20 cents a share a year earlier.

 After adjustments, Expedia reported adjusted earnings per share of 25 cents, down from

adjusted earnings of 26 cents a share in 2010.

 Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters First Call expected earnings of 26 cents per share for the

latest quarter and revenues of $795.4 million.

 Officials explained the jump in first-quarter revenue, saying that hotel room nights grew by 15%

and international revenue grew by 31%.
