§ Kheda, also known as ‘Kaira’ is located 35 km from Map 1: District Map of Kheda with Talukas

Ahmedabad on the bank of river Vatrak

§ Kheda district borders with Sabarkantha district in the


north, Panchmahals district in the east, Vadodara district
in the south, and Ahmedabad district in the west

§ The district has 13 talukas with Nadiad (district


headquarter), Mahemdabad, Kapadwanj, Matar, and
Kheda being the developed talukas

Economy and Industry Profile
§ Kheda district is also known by the name golden leaf since it is the major producer of tobacco in the

State. Additionally the district has a strong base of cotton cultivation specifically in Nadiad taluka.

§ Nadiad taluka is the industrial center in the district, with major concentration of industries in sectors

like Textiles, Paper, Electrical equipments and Food processing

§ One of the largest manufacturer of corrugated boxes in the Country, the Core Emballage Ltd., is

present in the district

§ The upcoming industrial sectors in the district include Ceramics, Plastic and its products, Cement and

Gypsum

§ There are huge natural gas reserves in Matar taluka of the district. Oil and gas company Shell India

Ltd. has its bottling plant and filling facilities in the district

§ One of the oldest textile industries - New Shorock Mills (Division of Mafatlal Industries) has its

operations at Nadiad

§ In the year 2006-07, Kheda produced 1.07 lakh metric 2nd largest producer of Cereals in Gujarat

Minerals
§ Major minerals found in the district are bauxite, limestone Map 2: Mineral Reserves in Kheda
and quartz. Other minerals found in the district include
bentonite, brick sand, road metal, sand, gravel and black trap
§ Limestone occurs in Balasinor taluka of Kheda with 800
Million tonnes of reserves, processing having 7% share in
total reserves of the State
§ Bauxite reserves are found in Thasara and Kapadwanj
talukas (approx. 89 Million tonnes) and quartz reserves exist
in Balasinor and Thasar talukas of the district

Major Industries
§ Presently there are 20 medium and large scale industries in Kheda district

§ All these industrial units are concentrated in Nadiad, Mahemdabad, Kheda and Matar talukas of the
district with an investments aggregating to INR 62,776.32 lakh (USD 149 million), generating 6,720 jobs

Small Scale Industries (SSI)
§ There are 8,186 small scale industries operating in Kheda district. Some of the main industries under
SSI are chemicals, miscellaneous manufacturing industries, repairing services, food products and non-
metallic mineral products

§ Maximum number of SSI units (2,521 Units) are related to Repairing services followed by textile
industry with 1,086 units

§ Most of the small scale industries are concentrated in Nadiad, Kapadwanj, Thasara and Mahemdabad

Economy Drivers

§ The proposal for setting up an integrated textile park in Kheda is expected to fuel the industrial

and economic growth of the district with increase in employment opportunities and investments in

the textile sector

§ The completion of Ahmedabad-Nadiad Expressway and Nadiad-Vadodara Expressway, two

– lane dual carriageway with full access control has enabled to save time in commuting between

these districts and increase the commercial value of the region because of better accessibility

§ The emerging industrial sectors such as Paper, Cement & Gypsum and Ceramics showed

an upward trend in investments in the last two decades. This would further boost the industrial

growth and economy of the district

§ Kheda has some of the best mineral based industries which offer scope for investments in the

mining sector

§ There is broad gauge rail route that connects the district to Mumbai and Ahmedabad

§ The nearest airport is located at Vadodara which is about 38 km from district headquarter Nadiad

§ The airport connects the district to important cities such as Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Pune

Power Supply Network
Power

§ Gujarat Electricity Board located at Nadiad is the supplier of power to the district
§ Kheda district has the largest thermal power station in the State of 1,470 MW located at Wanakbori in
Balasinor taluka for industrial and residential electricity supply
§ There are also well-developed substations spread across the district – 1 substation of 220 K.V. at
Kapadwanj, 2 substations of 132 K.V. at Mahemdabad & Nadiad, and 19 substations of 66 K.V.

§ There is one section of gas pipeline present in the district, Vadodara – Ahmedabad – Kalol of 41.91 km

§ The proposed length of gas grid is 15 km which is expected to cover the Tarapur block

Water

Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can be obtained from three main sources, viz Gujarat
Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB), irrigation canal, and sardar sarovar project.

§ The project envisages supply of water for drinking purposes, irrigation, and industrial use
§ Sardar Sarovar Project water for industrial supply is made available through branch canals

Proposed Infrastructure Projects
§ Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited (TCGL) has identified
Navagam village in Kheda district to be developed as a rural tourist
hub. This will promote village tourism in the State and also benefit
local communities economically, socially, and culturally. Various
activities such as like landscaping and development of parks at
Navagam would be taken up

§ Gujarat State Road Development Corporation Ltd. has envisaged


construction of road-over-bridge in lieu of existing level crossing No.
276/C in km 1/8 in km 2/0 of Nadiad bypass (link joining Dabhan-Nadiad
and Nadiad-Ahmedabad road)

§ A MoU is signed between the District Rural Development Agency;


Nadiad; Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union; Anand; and
Commissioner of Rural Development, Government of Gujarat in respect
of special project for ‘Improving socio-economic conditions of BPL
families of Kheda district through Dairying and Animal Husbandry

§ Two civil hospitals in the district are located at Kheda and

Nadiad

§ A multi-specialty hospital, - Muljibhai Patel Urological

Hospital (MPUH), is located in Nadiad taluka of the district, which at Nadiad, Kheda

is one of its kind in Asia as it’s the first hospital in the country

devoted entirely to Nephrology and Urology.

§ D.D.M.M. Institute of Cardiac Surgery and an Ayurvedic

Hospital at J.S. Patel Ayurvedic College are also located in the

Tourism

Tourism
§ Dakor – Dakor is the most famous religious place of Lord Ranchhodraiji
in Gujarat. It is located at a distance of 33 km from Nadiad taluka and
attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. It has eight domes and twenty
four turrets covered with gold leaves
§ Dinosaur and Fossil Park – Raioli in Kheda district is a treasure of
Dakor temple
fossils and fossilised eggs of a 10 meter long dinosaur. These fossils
are about 65 million year old. The park has some basic plaster models
and information about the dinosaur
§ Santaram Temple – It is a popular pilgrimage site in Gujarat dedicated
to Saint Santaram Maharaj who is believed to be the incarnation of
Hindu trinity of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, depicted with three
heads and six hands
§ Water Structures – Kapadwanj taluka has two sub-terranean water Santaram temple
structures – a Kund and the Battris Kotha ni Vav. The Kund is a large
square tank with steps on all four sides leading to the water. The Vav
descends five stories. The columns that support the pavilion roofs have
beautiful carvings
