.AttheclimatechangenegotiationsinCopenhageninDecember2009,HEALandHCWHledatop-levelhealthdelegationwhichcalledonleaderstoavertaglobalpublichealthcrisisbytakingurgentactiontocombatclimatechange.ThecurrentstudybuildsonresearchcommissionedbyHEALandpublishedjointlywithClimateActionNetworkEurope(CAN-E)andWWFinSeptember2008:

HEALhasshownastrongtrackrecordinbringingknowledgeabouttheimpactofclimatechangeonhealthtotheforefrontofthenegotiationsatEUandinternationallevels,engagingpublichealthandhealthprofessionalcommunities,particularlyinEurope.In2007,HEALpublishedabriefingwhichreviewedthelatestscientificevidenceonclimatechangeandhealthfromtheIntergovernmentalPanelonClimateChange(IPCC).Thislaidthebasisforbuildingpolicyrecommendations,focusingonprotectingthemostvulnerablegroupsandconsideringwin-win-winscenariosforpublichealth,adaptationandmitigation,suchaspromotingstricterairqualitystandardsandenergysavingandenergyefficiencypoliciesasameanstoreducinggreenhousegasemissions.ThroughitsworkwiththeWorldHealthOrganizationinfacilitatingWorldHealthDayonclimatechangein2008,HEALhelpedtosharehealthconcernsaboutclimatechangewithmajorstakeholdergroupsaroundtheworld,includingviainternationalorganisationsofmedicalprofessionals,patients,youthandspecialistjournalists.HEALadvocacyworkaimstoimprovetheunderstandingoftheimpactofclimatechange-andclimatechangepolicy-onpeople’shealthandpreventingill-health,particularlythatofchildrenandthosewithrespiratoryproblems.Information,resourcesandpartnershipsareprovidedforgroupssuchastheEuropeanRespiratorySociety,EuropeanLungFederationandEuropeanFederationofAllergyandAirwayDiseasesPatientsAssociationwithmaterialstailoredtotheirneeds.HCWH'sworkextendstoadvocacyeffortsonclimateandhealthatgloballevel.TogetherwiththeWorldHealthOrganization,itlaunchedareportentitled
Healthy Hospitals,HealthyPlanet,HealthyPeople:AddressingClimateChangeinHealthCareSettings.
Thismakesthecaseforhealthsectorleadershipandhighlightshospitalsandclinicsinover30countriesthataremodellingefficiency,resilience,andrenewableenergystrategies.Inthepasttwoyears,HCWHhaslaunchedacomprehensiveenergyandclimatestrategyforthehealthcaresectorandbeguntopositionhealthcareorganisationsandprovidersasaleadingsectorinaddressingtheclimatecrisis.HCWHprovidesthehealthcaresectoraroundtheworldwiththeinformation,resourcesandtoolstoassessandimproveitsenergyandwaterefficiency,transportationpolicy,andotherclimate-relatedpractices,therebymodellingclimatemitigationpoliciesandstrategiesandreducingthehealthsector’sclimatefootprint.OuractivitiesareparticularlystronginEurope,theUnitedStates,withworkdevelopinginAsiaandLatinAmerica.
