Queer Rising and the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club endorse a Faith-Positive Marriage Equality Rally sponsored by Connecting Rainbows
Demonstration at New York City Hall on Tuesday, June 14 at 11:30 am
June 13, 2011 New York, NY Following a week with multiple religious leaders issuing statements in support of marriage equality in New York State, two prominent groups, the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club and Queer Rising, are endorsing a faith-positive LGBT rally organized by Connecting Rainbows in support of marriage equality at New York City Hall on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at 11:30 am. Additionally, the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club is joining Connecting Rainbows and Queer Rising in demanding that Gov. Andrew Cuomo pull out all the stops -- and get marriage equality passed through the state legislature. Our society is really making it better now, because more people of faith are beginning to hear their religious leaders talk about progressive messages of inclusion and equality, said Louis Flores, a member of Connecting Rainbows.

About the demonstration at City Hall Park :

LGBT activists, allies, and people of faith will gather for a demonstration at the East Side gates to City Hall to express the vital social and economic justice reasons for the passage of marriage equality in New York State. LGBT New Yorkers, many of whom are people of faith or follow a different spiritual journey, deserve equal protection under that law that would be afforded if the right to marriage was equally available to all loving and committed couples regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Marriage is a vehicle that society uses to distribute rights, benefits, and equality. One way for LGBT Americans to access equal rights would be to be allowed to legally marry. Another way, which would work concurrently, would be to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity by amending the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
