Designing a Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge

The City of Sacramento is beginning the final design for a new pedestrian/bicycle over-crossing extending from the Sacramento City College Light Rail Station to the Curtis Park neighborhood. Get a project update from the design team on June 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sierra 2 Center. The environmental phase will conclude in July, clearing the way for final design. Project Highlights

Pedestrian bridge and ramps will connect the Sacramento City College light rail station to the future Curtis Park Village. The project design phase is underway and will conclude in 2012. Project feasibility and design are entirely grant funded.

Project Details

This project will:

Improve access to public transit, pedestrian and bicycle commuting. Provide a convenient, intuitive and user friendly route for bicycle and foot traffic. Offer a new connection between Curtis Park and Land Park neighborhoods.

The proposed ramps and bridge will be 12-feet wide, allowing enough room to accommodate two-way pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The bridge and ramps will incorporate unique and elegant details through the architecture, lighting, coloring and landscaping at the entrance and exits of the crossing. A five to seven foot concrete railing with access shields will increase safety for pedestrians and light rail trains below. Ramp and staircase access will be available at both ends of the crossing. The ramp structure will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act standards. One ramp will end at the proposed Curtis Park Village development and lead into bike lanes. The ramp on the Sacramento City College side will lead to the light rail station.

Project Funding

The project is funded through the competitive Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) Community Design Grant program. No City general funds are being used.

The current design proposes staircases at both ends of the crossing to make the trip shorter for pedestrians while a ramp will serve bicyclists. The staircases may also be designed with wheel tracks on each side so that bicyclists can walk their bicycle down the staircase if desired.

This bridge provides a safe and convenient access for those walking and bicycling between the Sacramento City College Light Rail Station and Curtis Park. Currently, pedestrians and bicyclists must use Sutterville Road to travel between Curtis Park and the light rail station. This multi-lane, high-speed roadway makes walking and bike riding a risky and an inconvenient way to travel. Establishing a more convenient and safe crossing encourages pedestrian and bicycle transit, ultimately providing more commuting options.

Where does the project go from here?

The design phase is anticipated to be complete in mid-2012. The city is already pursuing outside funding for construction, which will begin as soon as funding becomes available.
