Student comprehension of concepts in Mathematics and Science is based upon their prior knowledge, including the vocabulary and the contexts connected with the concepts. When different vocabulary/linkages are introduced at different levels for the same concept, students become disengaged, confused, and lost. Participants will examine discipline-specifi c examples of these unconnected approaches to the same concept and discuss their own experiences with student misconceptions. Data will be provided on content alignment across colleges in core Mathematics and Science courses.
