Chemistry Form 4

Quick Review C, pg 69 1. Potassium has the electron arrangement of 2.8.8.1 whereas sodium has the electron arrangement of 2.8.1. The single valence electron of potassium becomes further away from the nucleus as compared to sodium. Hence, the forces of attraction between the nucleus and the valence electron becomes weaker. Therefore, it is easier for the potassium atom to donate the single valence electron to attain the stable octet electron arrangement. 2. (a) Observation : Rubidium metal burns in chlorine gas to form white solid rubidium chloride. Chemical equation: 2Rb(s) + Cl2(g) 2RbCl(s) (b) Observation : Rubidium metal moves vigorously on the surface of water with a lilac flame, pop and hissing sound. A colourless solution that turns red litmus paper to blue is formed. Chemical equation: 2Rb(s) + 2H2O(l) 2RbOH(aq) + H2(g) 3. (a) Yes. Because they have the same number of valence electron. (b) (i) R2O (ii) T2CO3
