MAKING THE MOST OF THE FAIRS

The Careers Centre is organising two Fairs this semester in the St Andrews Town Hall, Queens Gardens (off South Street, across from the Halifax Bank of Scotland car park). The Fairs are annual events aimed at students of all years and disciplines if you miss them you miss out on fantastic opportunities to find out about many potential opportunities on one day, in one place.

Weighing up a future in Law?

If so, the LAW FAIR on Tuesday 9 October will be invaluable for you, offering you the chance to meet representatives from a record number of City firms, regional firms and course providers. Find out about conversion courses, sponsorship, training contracts and vacation placements. Great opportunity to talk to 30 major commercial law firms and postgraduate course providers. For a list of exhibitors and more information visit www.st-andrews.ac.uk/careers/students/events.php?page=fairs

Concerned about your future?

Looking for a place on a Graduate Training Scheme, or an internship with a major employer? Attend the GRADUATE MANAGEMENT & FINANCE FAIR on Friday 12 October to meet blue chip private and also large public sector employers. Of interest to students of all years and disciplines. For a list of exhibitors and more information visit: www.st-andrews.ac.uk/careers/students/events.php?page=fairs

Obtain a copy of the Fair programme(s), from our website (www.st-andrews.ac.uk/careers), or from the Careers Centre. Read about the organisations attending, then do some research into the ones of interest to you - website addresses are listed in the programme entries. Using the floor plan, come to the Fair armed with a target list of exhibitors and some informed questions, perhaps about their graduate opportunities (what does the work actually involve?), training, or work experience. Often organisations will try to bring recent St Andrews graduates to tell it like it is. Not sure what you want to do next? Fairs are a great place to browse, get ideas and talk to people who were in your shoes not so long ago! Arrive early the Fairs tend to be busiest in the afternoons, and organisations normally start to take their stands down at 3.00pm sharp. Bring a pen so that you can jot down any important information, including the names of the representatives you speak to (good for including in your answer to the Why are you applying to us? question on application forms, and for future networking!). Be polite and friendly to everyone you meet they may ask for your name in the hope of spotting it on an application form later. Make sure they find it for the right reasons! If any of your queries are still unanswered, come into the Careers Centre and speak with a Duty Adviser.
