JOSEPHS COLLEGE OF QUEZON CITY INSTITUTE OF NURSING CLINICAL FOCUS 1st SEMESTER 2010-2011 HOSPITAL AREA OF SPECIALIZATION Description: Operating Room Nursing is a specialized field whereby nursing students get a good grasp of the nurses role in the pre-operative, intra-operative and post operative care of patients. Delivery Room Nursing is also a specialized field whereby nursing students can perform their nurses role in providing care to women who have recently delivered or who are in labor. Methodology: Hands-on experience in the area of specialization. General Objectives: At the end of this rotation, the student will be able to acquire knowledge, skills, orientation and attitude being practiced in the area of specialization with emphasis on the culture of excellence being followed by all departments of Antipolo City Medical Hospital. Specific Objectives: The student will be able to: Determine and achieve the clinical objective and assignments for this rotation. Familiarize self with the following: a) Hospital mission and vision b) Physical set-up c) Facilities d) Organizational set-up e) Key Personnel : ANTIPOLO CITY MEDICAL HOSPITAL : OR/DR/NICU

General Policies and procedures Patient Population Procedures and routines done in the area Use of hospital forms

Give an overview about the different cases that he/she will encounter in the area. Establish rapport with the patient and the staff in the unit. Demonstrate critical thinking ability in dealing with day to day activities Assess patient thoroughly and record/report actual and potential problems. Assist scrub/circulating nurse in performing procedures/ nursing skills. Provide holistic pre-operative, intra-operative and post operative nursing care to the patient Acquire cases as required by the Philippine Regulation Commission

Activities: Day 1 Orientation to the clinical objectives and assignments for this rotation. Orientation and familiarization of the hospital mission and vision, physical set-up, facilities, organizational set-up, key personnel, general policies and procedures and patient population. Orientation on the SOPs of the hospital specifically in the area of assignment. Observation of the procedures done in the unit. Observation and familiarization of the admission procedures in the unit. Familiarization to the use of different OR forms. Return Demonstration of surgical hand washing, gowning, donning. Review of stages of labor and nursing interventions in each stage. Pre-test

Days 2, 3, 4 and 5 Assign student in the operating room or delivery room or NICU. Assist the scrub/circulating nurse in their respective operating theaters Assist the physician in the delivery room. Assist the physician/nurse in doing the procedures in the immediate care of the newborn (e.g. cord dressing, bed bath, etc.) Observe endorsement to the post operative/ recovery room Proper care of specimen Do after care of instruments Identify and familiarize self with the different surgical instruments. Monitoring of post-op patient
