16 2011 RED RAIDERS FOOTBALL PREVIEW
Locked, Loaded and Ready To Win

My Pops Was Right

Ever since I was born, it was embedded in my mind that football is a way of life. I was going to be a Longhorn, and I was going to attend every game. Its as if my rst words were, Hook Em. When I started college, I had no idea that football really is a culture everyone gets involved with. (Who would have known my Pops was right.) College campuses are lled with students tailgating, watching football games, and wearing their school colors with pride. And if you arent, then you should. College is something to be proud of. Which is why I am so glad that September has rolled around. Not only is college football back, but it is the most anticipated month of the year for me. I get football, beer, Tequila (...of course) and my birthday! If youre not celebrating with me, youre not doing it right. XOXO, Jasmine Vallejo, Editor @jasminevallejo

Jasmine, what is your favorite thing about starting school again?

- William Metcalf, Austin

Kaitlyn, what is the craziest story you have from studying abroad?
- Hiedi Adkins, San Marcos

Abby, what are your tips for staying fashionable when the hectic school year starts up?
- Piper Burke, San Antonio

Ryan, do you have a favorite sports team?

- Austin Cashell, San Marcos

With the another semester rolling around the corner, also comes the great sport of football. My favorite thing about starting the fall is the fact that I get to see my Longhorns play on the eld along with Burnt Orange fans everywhere. Saturdays are lled with BBQ, country music, beer and cowboy boots. Saturdays cant get any better than that!

Well, there would have to be a tie between tanning butt naked on the Barcelona beach or nearly getting arrested in Paris on the 4th of July. Both stories involve lots of alcohol, raging, and ignoring consequences after my actions, but both crazy incidents proved successful for me in the end. Cest la vie!

Dresses. Everyone always thinks Im dressed up because I am wearing dresses, but they are really the easiest things to throw on in the morning. Also, my favorite hairstyle through the summer was the messy chignon. No one ever noticed when my hangover prevented me from caring about my hair.

Ive been a die hard Cowboys fan my entire life, even though they dont always deliver. ats an understatement. Although I do have a lot of international soccer teams that I like to follow Barcelona plays some pretty aggressive football!

RED RAIDER FOO

2011 Rebuilding, Reloading & Ready

The Red Raider football team, despite some bumps in the road over the past few years, appears to be headed in the right direction. Eight wins is nothing to shake the proverbial stick at, and thats what Coach Tommy Tuberville led his team to in the 2010 season. 2011s prospects look about the same, and the future looks bright. Expect the offense to continue its swing towards overall balance, especially with RB Eric Stephens toting the rock. Seth Doege will need to develop as a solid QB in this offense, especially if Stephons can make the defenses more honest. The defense will continue to improve with another year under its belt with Coach Tubervilles defensive scheme.

A Welcomed Win to Kick Things Off

The Red Raiders begin a home-and-home 2-game series with the Bobcats of Texas State this year. The Bobcats prognosis looks good long-term, but should have problems handling the Tech offense. Look for some high scores here, especially on our side!

Rested, Ready and On the Road

The Red Raiders get a week off and then head west to Albuquerque to face the downtrodden Lobos. Coach Tuberville and his staff will have likely ironed out any wrinkles found in the rst week of action, and will be ready to annihilate the overmatched Lobos.

Another One For the Road

The Jayhawks nished the 2010 season with only one Big-12 win, and only three wins overall. Their prospects look no better in 2011, and despite them typically playing decent at home, the Red Raiders, fresh off three consecutive wins to open the season, shouldnt have much of a problem here.

Damn You Aggies

gam

The Longhorns have pretty much owned the state of Texas football-wise for many years now, but between our Red Raiders and the Aggies of Texas A&M, the playing eld has been somewhat evened up recently. The Aggies look good in 2011 and could limit the Red Raider offense. Chalk this one up as the rst loss of the season against a very good Aggie squad.

Texas A&M: 27 Texas Tech: 17

VS

KANSAS STATE
at Lubbock, TX

Oct. 15th

Back on Track
After a likely loss to the improved Aggies, the Red Raiders will look to get back on track against a pretty good Wildcat squad. With a loss under our belt and looking forward to a tough game against Oklahoma looming, a win here is pretty critical.

Texas Tech: 37 Kansas State: 24

VS

Keys to VICTORY

OKLAHOMA
at Norman, OK

Oct. 22nd

1 2 3

Play Some D!
If the Red Raiders are to escape Norman with a win, this defense, which has been said to be much faster in 2011, will have to be almost dominant. And thats no small task against Landry Jones and a solid Sooner offense. Despite the Sooners having a good defense, the Red Raiders should put some points up on the board. Unfortunately though, the Sooners will just prove too tough at home.

Defense: As with just about every pre-season, were a bit worried about the defense. The good news is that were looking fast, and have had another year to learn and develop under Coach Tubervilles schemes. The secondary was especially poor last season and theyll have to improve. Getting pressure on the opposing QB will help. Offensive Line: Weve always had a pretty under-rated offensive line; one that protects the QB and opens up gaping holes for RBs. As the offense shifts to more balance, the line will need to continue to open up those holes. Having a talented RB will certainly help things. These guys will want to block. Heady QB Play: Seth Doege should have the offense rolling by mid-season. But hes going to also have to play game manager in some cases, allowing Stephons to carry the offense. The junior has looked solid in spots, and the coaching staff should have him ready to carry the offense for a couple of seasons.

Oklahoma: 31 Texas Tech: 24

VS

IOWA STATE
at Lubbock, TX

Oct. 29th

Licking Wounds, Healing, Winning

Coming back from a tough loss will be mitigated by the fact that the Cyclones will be very beatable, especially here in Lubbock. This one could be a big one for the Red Raider offense.

Wheres Crabtree When Ya Need Him?

The Longhorns were a complete disappointment in 2010, but could have things back on track by this point in the 2011 campaign. If this contest were in Lubbock, itd be easier to chalk up a Red Raider win. But down in Austin with the Longhorns still seeking revenge for past Red Raider victories, well concede and give the Burnt Orange their due.

Cowboy Two-Step
Look, the Cowboys are a very, very good team. Losing to them will sting given its here in Lubbock, but well learn a lot about how this Red Raider deals with a high-octane passing offense from this contest. The Red Raiders could stick around until the end based on their strong offense, but more than likely the Cowboys will have more in the end.

Capping Off a Tough Three Games

Tough three games for the Red Raiders; facing a resurgent Longhorn team, a very good Cowboy squad and then a sneakily good Tiger squad in Columbia. Had this been in Lubbock, wed expect a rebound and a win, but it could be a squeaker loss.

VS

BAYLOR
at Arlington, TX

Nov. 26th

New, Neutral, and Closing Out With a W

After a rough three games, the Red Raiders will welcome in a lesser foe in the Baylor Bears, even if its at a neutral site. The in-state sorta rivals will face off at Cowboy Stadium outside of Dallas. On the fast track, the offenses will be rollin. Our speed should be able to partially contain Robert Grifn and the Bear defense simply wont stop a condent (at this point) Doege and the pass offense.

Texas Tech: 34 Baylor: 24 After winning eight contests in 2010, seven wins in 2011 may seem like a big step back. But lets not forget we have a host of young receivers, a young QB and a stilldeveloping defense. The schedule is a bit tougher this season to boot. Seven wins will get us to a bowl, and closing out the season with a win will be a good head start on what should be a very good 2012 campaign with a condent Doege and a host of playmakers on offense.

Musicfest 2012
6 Days. 40 Bands. 5 Mountains. ONE REALLY BIG TENT.
words: jasmine vallejo photos: Todd Purifoy + Carll Dunn + B. Baird

Musicfest was successful the rst year... and the second year.. and youve guessed it-- the third year too. Thats why its back for the 27th year because students who like to jam out with their friends among the most beautiful mountains in the world keep coming back to celebrate.

Where ski-lovin meets music-lovin

Not only do you have time to hit the slopes, but you have time to celebrate with bands already conrmed for the trip at Steamboat, Colorado, you are sure to catch great live music from: Randy Rogers Band, Chris Knight, Band of Heathens, Curtis Grimes, Reckless Kelly, Casey Donahew Band, Jack Ingram, No Justice, Jason Boland, Cory Morrow, Wade Bowen, Stoney LaRue, Roger Creager, Kyle Park, Kevin Fowler and many more!

Steamboat, Colorado

www.BIGSKITRIP.com

What happens on the slopes, stays on the slopes

Music, friends, beautiful scenery and special drinks of your choice are the perfect ingredients for a memorable winter break trip. Why stay at home and sulk with no story to tell to your grandchildren? Over 50 performances take place during Musicfest, and believe me, its an amazing opportunity to see as many great Texas and Americana artists as you can handle... all in one spot.

Perfect t for you

Whether you are ready for a cozy winter trip or for a action packed one, watching the concerts are crucial to Musicfest. They are held in different sizes including a stage resembling an old barn/hunting lodge, a huge tent, an intimate pub, an old saloon, a luxurious ballroom, and and outdoor stage.

Top 5 Reasons to leave Texas for Winter Break

1 Texas doesnt even 1.
have a winter. 2. 2 When you open your front door, you dont see hot skiers.

3. 3 Hot tubbing. Enough said. 4. 4 Spiked hot chocolate will be your new favorite recipe. 5. 5 You can nally wear UGGs without looking ugly.

TAILGATE THE RIGHT WAY

LET THESE STEPS GUIDE YOUR TAILGATING SKILLS

Its Saturday morning and youre A. getting an early start on studying, B. hitting the snooze button for the fteenth time, or C. shot-gunning a beer with your fellow teammates to show your school spirit? We all know the correct answer is C, so here are steps to make sure youre cheering for your team the right way.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR REAL ID

Enough said. They will be checking IDs at tailgates to get free beer, so make sure you take your identication to show them who is old enough to drink. Yes, twenty-four-year-olds exist as freshmen. KEY: Smile, stand tall, and drink!

DRESS ACCORDINGLY

MASTER THE ART OF DRINKING

ALWAYS CARRY THE ESSENTIALS

Football season can get a bit tricky. One game its hot, another its colder than the North Pole, and there are even times its so humid outside, your hair is taking you back to the 70s. Check the weather before hand, to make sure youll be able to watch, eat, and drink comfortably.

Want a How-To done? Tweet us @StudyBreaks

24 | SEPTEMBER 2011 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

You have two hours before the game starts. That means, two hours to drink all the Shiner Bock you wish (or whatever your favorite beer is). Mastering the art of drinking at tailgates is a necessity. Fastest beer bong? Youve got it champ. Who can shotgun a beer in under 5 seconds...cold? You can. Now all you need is the Rocky theme song to dance along with.

The main reason to tailgate is to booze it up before heading to the stadium to see your team kick ass. What are the essentials to drink the right way? Take your koozie because beer after beer can get a bit cold, your sunglasses because it is 11am on a Saturday and the sun is starting to reach its peak, and oh yeah, the reason youre tailgating, a football game! Dont forget your ticket to get in.

Your go-to-guide for what you want (and dont want) to be caught wearing on campus.

DO

DO
Feel like looking cute and dressing up without taking it too far? Throw on a breezy romper and pair it with some strappy sandals to nish the look. Running late to class and dont know what to wear? You can never go wrong with a v-neck. Sperrys are also a comfortable and trendy shoe when youre on the go.

DONT
Save the booty dress and the 6 inch stilettos for the clubs. Looking this fancy will denitely get you attention, but in all the wrong ways.

DO

Do yourself a favor and throw away all of your graphic tees right now. If you are waking up three hours before class to do your makeup and hair, youre trying too hard.

SEXTING

SHOULD YOU TRY IT?

So here is the no brainer: sexting can be very risky. Ive always heard (and witnessed) that what you text, email, chat, and skype your goods all up for others to know and well, see. Ive had my fair share of conversations that I wouldnt when the world seeing, but should that keep you from having some playful fun? If youre dating someone for over a year, then the trust may be strong enough, but be careful if youre sending it to some douche you just met at the bar.

Technology has taken over our lives- including our love lives. Sorry ladies, it isnt about love letters anymore, its about being sexy via email or text messages. Here are some rules to keep in mind while doing the deed in sexting. Sexual Health Peer educator Milla Impola gives you helpful hints.

THE SEXTING- TIME RULES:

Dont take pictures in dirty rooms. His main focus should be all eyes on you. If your room is messy, clothes everywhere, it takes away the sexy factor. Put a passcode on your phone Whether youve accidently forgot to erase those pictures, or your outbox, you sure dont want the possibility of you losing your phone and those pictures getting in the hands of anyone else. Pay attention to your To: indicator is mistake has been made by many, and this includes sending a picture to someone else. Lets not mistaken Dad for Dan. Dont Send it drunk. Especially if the picture was taken when you were drunk. If its a picture, carefully consider whether you want your face in it or not. What? at wasnt me. ats not my.face.? Its never your turn. You know, Ive had guys send me a picture of their full on nude body, ding dong showing and all, and then saying Babe, your turn. Just because they send a sexy text/picture to you does not mean you OWE one back. Type out speci cally what you would like to do to them. I suggest actually typing out speci cally what you would like to do to the person. I cant wait to *insert derogatory word of choice for sex here* you just doesnt seem as sexually arousing as describing in detail what youd like to do to the other person. Imagination is a powerful tool, people. Use it. But still keep in mind that whatever you send might (and probably will) be shared with someone else. Its like getting a really funny joke, part of the fun is getting to share it with someone else.

HOROSCOPESSPOT THE DIFF THATS A FACT, JACK SPOT THE DIFFERENCE! Can you spot the 5 differences between the two photos?

STUFF

SEPTEMBER HOROSCOPES
HOW TO GET THE GRADES YOU WANT
Aries
See your professor? Ask em if you can meet at a coffee shop somewhere, alone.

Taurus
Find a smarter and hotter looking clone of yourself. During exams, make an easy swap.

Gemini
Check out your TA. Check out that perfect ass.

Cancer
You and the library. Youve got a date.

Leo
You inner Betty Crocker needs to come out. See what your professor likes to eat. Cake? Cookies? Muffins? Youve got it.

Virgo
That smile of yours works wonders. Give a little wink and youre good.

Libra
Start the note compilation email. We all know youre that student who never went to class anyway.

Scorpio
Find out the person that answers the most questions from the professor. Next day, call dibs on the seat next to them.
1. Dirk 2. Mickey 3. Sunglasses 4.Tatoo 5. Cap

THATS A FACT, JACK

FOOTBALL FACTS

Sagittarius
Create a study group. No hot friends allowed. Youll never get any studying done.

Although an NFL football game can last up to three hours the ball is really only in play for about 11 minutes. During a football game, Georgia Tech once beat Cumberland University 222-0. The huddle in a football game was created by deaf football players. This technique was to prevent the opposing team to read their plays through sign language. When youre watching a football game on television, more than 56% of plays shown are ones you have already seen, replayed.

Capricorn
Sleep on your biology book. Osmosis is probably your only hope.

Aquarius
Youre in school still? Office of registrar needs to see you to sign your withdrawal form.

Pisces
Apparently, you remember things better when youre high. See if that works for you.
