Chapter 4: Reflection and Choice: Framing the Constitution

(pp 107-115) Preparing for your Opportunity

These are the BIG QUESTIONS to be thinking about over the next 2 weeks as you read chapter 4. These are great questions for you guys to discuss together as a group! How did the Constitution address the problems the states faced during the period that they were governed by the Articles of Confederation? (Remember they were no longer colonies yet not yet united states.) What were the compromises that allowed the creation of the Constitution? Why were each of these compromises needed? The Constitution begins with the phrase We the People. Why was that important when the constitution was ratified? Is it more or less important now and why?

THIS WEEKS OPPORTUNITY: Im going to tell you the question for this weeks opportunity!!! (Next weeks opportunity will come from the above questions so you have 2 weeks to prepare for it!) Here it is: John Jay was the secretary of foreign affairs under the Articles of Confederation. Describe the situation that occurred regarding the use of the Mississippi River and the use of port of New Orleans in detail. You must also know the arguments for both sides of the issue (northern and southern). So whats the catch? The first part of the opportunity will be a standard essay about the details. (You will have 10 minutes for this.) The second part of the opportunity will be a defense of a position. You will be assigned a position at the beginning of class (northern or southern) and you will be asked to write a letter to John Jay trying to persuade him to act in your benefit. Thats why you need to know the positions of both you wont know which you will have to defend! (You will have another 10 minutes for this.)
