SOURCE ANALYSIS GUIDE

1. Basics: Identify the basic features of the document.


1. What is the title of the document?
 President Corazon Aquino before the US Congress
2. Who produced the document? (the author, the publisher)
 RTV MALACANANG
3. What kind of primary/secondary source is it? (letter, official records, speech, interviews, film
etc.)

 It is a speech that provides a first-hand account of an event, which is the primary source.

4. When was the document produced? (if the date is given be specific otherwise put the century
example. 16th century)

5. Who is the intended audience? (the people, the king, Juan etc.)
 US Congress

2. Contextualize:
1. What events/developments were swirling around the author at the time the document was
produced? (think globally and locally, example: Age of exploration/discovery/expansion)
 It stated the political issues of the Philippines and freeing the people from dictatorship. It is the
age of development.
2. Describe the time from which the event happened (think locally, what was happening in the
Philippines?)

 It is the time when the husband of President Corazon Aquino died in 1893, which is also the 11th
president of the Philippines, and it is also the time when the freedom of the Filipinos was recently
granted.
3. Purpose/Content:
1.List three (3) things the author said that you think are important (quote the exact words and
annotate)
a.) "President of all my people I will not betray the cause of peace by which I came to
power.”
b.) “I will not stand by and allow an insurgent leadership to spurn our offer of peace, kill our
young soldiers, and threaten our new freedom.”

2. What evidence in the document helps you know why it was written? (quote from the document)

 It has been verified and has an official link related to the document.

4. Historical Significance:
1. What does the document say about the specific historical moment in which it was produced?
(i.e....what does it say about the beliefs, attitudes, material realities and social relations at the time it
was produced?)

 The specific historical moment in which it was produced was changing the dictatorship into a
democracy for the Filipinos, which happened when President Corazon Aquino became the
president of the Philippines.

2. Does the document illuminate a historical shift? (We are talking about Philippine History
here, is it the beginning of a new era? Revolution etc.)

 Yes, it is the start of equal rights for Filipinos.

3. Why do you think the document is significant? (Like how does it shed light to our knowledge of
Philippine history, does it change your perception? Please be specific as to why is it significant to you, do
not generalize.)

 It is significant that I came to the realization that the US wants the Philippines to be governed by
dictatorship, which I did not know. I was also aware of what would happen if a single ruler
dominated the Philippines. This can lead to a terrible economy, with people living in poverty.
