DISTILLATION

“We separate pure solvents from their solutions; We purify ‘em!”

THE VILLAIN

Finger Dude The Solution The Rat-ifier
The Quest . . .
“The Solution” has captured “Pure Solvent”.
Now, The Distillationers have to defeat “The
Solution”, and save (separate) “Pure
Solvent”, the damsel in distress, from him.
How will they do it? What precautions must
they take? Who’s “Pure Solvent” and how
does she look like? Please watch to find
out…
Our identity
Why are we different from the fractional
distillators?
Simple distillation Fractional distillation
simpler setup than much better separation
fractional between liquids than
Advant •faster distillation times simple distillation
ages •consumes less energy •can more readily purify

than fractional complex mixtures than

distillation simple distillation

Best pure liquids with large
mixtures of liquids with
used boiling differences or
smaller boiling point
for: liquids with solid
separations.

The Plan…
Conditions…
Know how lucky we are? We’ll show you:
b. Pure’s boiling point is more than 25
degrees Celsius lower than Solution’s
c. Both of them are relatively pure…
d. And “The Solution’s” a weakling!

Yup, if one of these conditions were not met,

our plan would have failed!
Part #1
• Finger Dude, turn on the Bunsen burner!
• Make sure the thermometer is beside the
arm of the distilling flask!
This is so that the entire bulb of the
thermometer is bathed in the rising vapour
• Wait! You’ve forgotten the boiling chips!
They are used for safety reasons, to prevent
superheating and bumping.
• Turn off the Bunsen burner before it
reaches Solution’s boiling point!
Part #2
• TSoC, turn on water input once the Pure,
in vapour form, reaches the condenser
• Don’t forget, water input MUST be from
the bottom of the condenser!
This is to ensure that the condenser is
always completely filled with cold water,
maximising the recovery of purified liquid in
the process
Part #3
• Cake Man, stop eating cake and help out!
• Hold the test tube at the end of the tube
engaged in the condensation process
• DO NOT allow any of Pure to drip out,
even one less drop of her.
• But sir, how would you know when she will
be completely saved?
Final Part
• This is where I come in!
• When I notice that:
c. There is a drop in temperature
d. When none of Pure is still being formed
Then, I will save Pure, claim all the credit,
and make her love me!
To the rescue again!
• Since pure is saved, the distillationers are
off to help out 3 other beauties of the
world, and they are…
• The “preparation of alcoholic beverages”
• The “refining of petroleum”
• The “desalination of salt water”.
And the villian
tags along..
The Finale
However….
Upon agreeing
that the Rat-ifier
was bossy, didn’t
do anything and
wanted to claim
the credit…
