CONCLUSION

• Low yield of catch (Milazzo)

• Retail of fresh fish and low fishing overhead contribute to a guaranted

income for a limited artisanal fishing fleet

• Presence of albacore (Thunnus alalunga) all the years in the Aeolian

area (Milazzo-Isole Eolie)

• Catch composition is characterized by adult fishes

• Underexploited stock

• Low price of fishes at the first level of production (No Retail)

• High price of fuel (fishing activity)

• 3-4 people crew

• High price of bait (S. pilchardus, S. aurita)

• High fishing overhead

SCHEDULE

Fishing activity to catch albacore (October-November 2007) in

order to:

• observe fishing activity by drifting longline for albacore (bait

used, numebr of hooks, yield, profit)
• film the fishing activity and to describe an ancient artisanal
fishing tradition
• monitor the quality control on the boat (fish conservation, ecc
HACCP)
• analyze the edible tissue (muscle) – Heavy metals

This activity it is necessary to better understand the way of market and

to improve the economic and social condition of fisherman operating in
this artisanal activity
OBJECTIVES

To propose the canned Albacore with organic olive oil in order to:

• improve relationship between fishermen and middlemen

channels, fish distribution will be integrated increasingly into the
distribution of other food fish.

• improve social and economic conditions of fisherman that work

in the artisanal fisheries

• create a little industry of fish conservation in which the same

fisherman can to work

• transfer this model to other place using fishes with high quality,
