The competition is divided into the following 11 categories: Kitchens: 1) under 30K 2) 30K 60K 3) over 60K
Cost is to include materials only (i.e. cabinetry, countertops, backsplash, flooring etc.)

III - Binder Requirements General Requirements: 1. A separate binder is required for each project/category entry. This must be a 1 white, 3-ring binder with clear plastic sleeve (sheet protectors) and 2 inside pockets. This binder can be purchased at any Staples (item #522531, model #05760) for ~$5. 2. No company identification or individual identification is to appear anywhere on the photos and design drawings. Individual/company identification should only appear on the entry form. 3. Photos are required. Photos cannot show any people or pets. All photos must be 8x10 and placed in plastic sleeves. Digital images are required for slide presentation at the Gala on a digital formatted CD or DVD. For more information on acceptable formats please contact Lorin at lorin@muskokacabco.com 4. Binders must be prepared and submitted according to the specifications below. Failure to comply may result in disqualification. Binder Specifications: 1. Binder Cover Title Page type only the project entry category on the title page. Place in cover sleeve (front) of the binder. 2. Entry form Complete this form and place in the pocket inside the front cover along with the $50 entry fee. Cheques must be included for the submission to be accepted. One cheque can be included for multiple entries per designer clearly indicating which other categories the designer has entered. One cheque per designer. Be sure to include photographers release and client release are included. 3. Design Statement Insert this in the first sleeve. Describe client objectives and how they were met. Explain any obstacles that were present and how they were overcome. Bulleted points are acceptable as long as the judges are able to understand what was accomplished in the project. For tips and guidelines for writing your design statement please refer to www.nkba.org/competition 4. Drawings insert a folded set of plans in the next sleeve. All drawings must be in black and white line drawings only. It is recommended that 11x17 sleeves are used for 11 x 17 drawings. These can be purchased at most business supply locations. Plans must include the following: a) A dimensioned Floor Plan in OR scale according to NKBA Graphic Presentation Standards. b) Elevation Drawings on each wall including cabinetry and islands from all directions dimensioned elevations in OR scale. Elevations can be combined on a page and must be referenced on the floor plan as to direction viewed from. c) Perspective drawings are optional. d) Each drawing must be in a separate sleeve
e) Please include a pdf version of all drawings on CD/DVD, to scale, for reproduction as a finalist (for board mounting purposes) 5. Photographs Insert in sleeves. a. Photographs must NOT be framed or permanently mounted, in 8x10 only, minimum or 4, maximum of 6 b. Matte finish and borderless is recommended c. Professional photography is recommended but not required. d. CD or DVD must be included in the back pocket of the binder and include only the photos submitted. Digital photos will NOT be used for judging purposes e. Project Cost - to include finishing materials only i.e. cabinets, countertops, backsplash, hardware, sinks/faucets, accessories, lighting and any custom work (range hoods etc.). DO NOT include construction materials, windows/doors, structural changes, appliances, furniture, labour, delivery, taxes, or design fees. Should your entry qualify as a finalist: The submitted drawing and photos will be mounted to a display board. These boards will be used during the 2012 Renovation show for the purpose of Peoples Choice Award judging AND to be on display during the awards Gala. All boards can be claimed at the end of the Gala event. All unclaimed boards and binders will be disposed of following the Gala event. NKBA Ottawa Chapter will not be held responsible for lost or damaged binders prior to received submission. All submitted materials will be handled with the utmost respect, however, for circumstances beyond our control the NKBA Ottawa Chapter will not be held responsible for loss or damage.
IV - Judging Criteria
1. Projects submitted will be judges by an impartial panel of industry professionals. 2. Projects will be evaluated by the judges using the following criteria: a. Visual Appeal considers the overall aesthetic appeal of the project. b. Creativity takes into account the use of innovative solutions, products, and materials c. Basic Safety and Ergonomics refers to the NKBA Kitchen and Bath Planning Guidelines and Access Standards. d. Elements and Principles of Design reflects information included in the Design Principles volume of the NKBA Professional Resource Library e. Presentation weighs the quality of floor plan, interpretive drawings, design statement and photographs. 3. The Judges reserve the right to eliminate any category for insufficient entries.
THE DECISION OF THE JUDGES IS FINAL DISQUALIFICATIONS: Failure to fulfill any of the eligibility requirements is
grounds for disqualification of an entry from the competition. NKBA Ottawa Chapter reserves the right to disqualify a project before, during or after the competition judging. Only one award will be presented per winning project to the Designer. Additional awards may be ordered for co-designers at cost.
