Engineering Design and Analysis with CAD/CATIA Spring 2020

Mini Design Project (Revised) Due Date: April 15, 2020

___________________________________________________________________________
Design Task: Design and produce a fully printable prototype for a cell phone holder

Problem Statement: For this project, students are tasked to design a cell phone holder for any
of the following scenarios mentioned below:
1. To watch a movie.
2. To play loud music.
3. To navigate maps while driving.
Students are encouraged to embed their personality traits into the final design. You can use any
cell phone that you would like as a reference for your cell phone holder design.
However, in order to ensure ease of design, it is strongly recommended that you use your own
cell phone to get accurate dimensions

Design Specifications (Try to stick to this even if we are not prototyping right now)
The minimum thickness of the holder should not be less than 2mm to ensure successfully
rapid prototyping.

Guidelines for the Final Report:

At a minimum, your final report should incorporate the following:
● Provide a clear problem statement with a brief discussion and justification about the target
consumer market and concerned user scenario for your product.
● Design and implement design ideation, evaluation and selection procedure based on a
weighted list of your needs.
● Provide a set of preliminary concepts (hand sketches are fine).
● Provide refined and detailed drawings of the selected leading concept for embodiment.
● Provide a CAD model of the final design with a conclusion and future Work.

Deliverables and Evaluations:

• A 3D solid model generated by CATIA V5: 50%
• Detail drawings (multi-views with full dimensions): 30%
• Project Report 10%
• Innovation and Creativity 10%
