Coursework Assignment - Individual – 1CWK50
6E4Z0004 Design Project

Brief Context
You are to create a design for a device that meets the abridged IMechE 2021 Design challenge
specification, the challenge is to design a Repeatable Vehicle. You will submit your design in the
format of a poster. You are not required to build a physical device. The design specification is
available on Moodle and only the document on Moodle will be treated as definitive.

This assignment is for 50% of your unit mark, and we expect you to spend up to 35 hours (per
student in team) on it, in total.

The Assignment Support video will talk you through the workflow and help guide your plan for
success.

back to the start point.

Schedule of work
Plan a realistic schedule of work to complete this assignment on time and to a high standard.

Recommended deadlines to complete each sub-task:

• 22nd March:- Read the specification and create a PDS

• 26th March:- Have initial vehicle design in place, have specified powertrain parameters (gear
ratio etc) and proved vehicle will operate (it will move).

• 1st April:- Detail design of Vehicle and powertrain finished, concept design of reverse system.

• 26th April:- Design work finished – preparation of Bill of materials, images and Poster

Assessment Brief
The repeatable vehicle runs in a ‘lane’ with a wall at one end and a circular target marked on the
floor. The device starts at an origin on the target and must move to touch the wall placed at right
angles to the point and then return to stop as close as possible to the start point. The device is to be
started manually, but once it has, no interference or outside control is allowed. The project
represents the first stages of a robotic device that could be used for materials handling purposes.

The aim is for you to create a design of vehicle that meets the design specification. It will not be
possible to assess your designs capability to return to the starting point. However, your design must
meet the design specification and operate (i.e. be capable of moving under its own power, come to a
stop at the wall as per the specification). A basic simulation tool will be provided for you to simulate
your vehicles operation.

Working with the Repeatable vehicle specification you are to design a device that meets the design
specification. Your work should focus on:

 Designing a device - the ‘repeatable vehicle’, that meets the design requirements.
 Design the drivetrain (propulsion system) for the device that meets the design specification.
 Produce detailed costed Bill of Materials (BOM) of your design.
 Design a concept system/device that enables your vehicle to reverse and stop at the original
start point.

Manufacturing Capabilities: In your design work you should consider the manufacturing capabilities
that are available to make the device – e.g. the capabilities that exist in the Blue Room Workshop
and the Department of Engineering. This generally includes:

 Hand tools, basic machine tools (Bench Drill, Band Saw, Sanders etc)
 2D laser cutting (5/3 mm Acrylic and 4 mm Ply-wood is kept in stock).
 Plastic forming – Vacuum forming and ability to make simple bends in Acrylic.

For further details contact technical services.

Standard Components and Suppliers: There are a number of standard components kept in stock for
this type of design work. There is also a number of standard suppliers that we use for equipment
useful for this project. A list of these items and suppliers can be found in the Blue Room Catalogue
E314 on the Department of Engineering Moodle page – Technical services section.

Further, we will supply a standard type of Multi-ratio gearbox kit in CAD format. You are NOT
required to use this model/assembly for your design but it may give you a starting point.

Submission - Poster:
You will submit a poster that communicates your detailed design solution. The poster is to be a
digital submission and must be A1 size (a template of this size is provided in a PowerPoint .pptx
format).

The objective of the poster is for you to clearly communicate your designed solution to others, such
that it is clear how your device work, how much it costs, the decisions you made in selection of the
drivetrain. The purpose of the poster is for you to communicate that your design fully meets the
design specification.

On your poster, you should include:

 A suitable title/name of your device.

 Your name and student number.
 MMU University logo (already on template).
 Sufficient images and annotations/descriptions that communicate your design and show
how it operates and meets the design specification. Images should be preferably CAD images
including:
o 2D General assembly Drawings.
o Renders/ suitably edited screen shots.

Hand sketches and other digital images can also be used. Key dimensions should be
included.

 Your completed costed BOM as per the design specification.

 Details of the drivetrain design that show how your device is propelled by a DC electric
motor. Here you should include:
o Descriptions of your calculations and design decisions taken during your design
work. Including (but not limited to):
 Determination of desired speed.
 Selection of gear/drive ratios.
 Selection of electric motor.
 Evidence that the design would operate.
o Detailed images (e.g. CAD) showing how the drive train system would be physically
built. For examples gearing systems.
 Details, including sketches/images of your concept system/device that enables the vehicle to
reverse and stop at the original start point.

Assessment
Formative Feedback
Members of the teaching team and will answer queries about the assignment during the timetabled
webinars and in the project surgery sessions (see your personal timetable for details). Advice given
during these sessions and feedback on any work you present will not count towards your final grade.

Outside timetable sessions, please email questions to the Teaching Team, the Support Tutors or your
Personal Tutor. The teaching team will not use their office hours to provide one-to-one or small
group assignment support, but a selection of emailed questions, and questions asked during the
timetabled classes will be added to the assignment’s FAQs page.
