Nicaragua
• Location- Nicaragua

• Capital – Managua

• Climate – Tropical in lowlands, cooler in

highlands

• Population – 5.500.000 ( est. In July 2006) It is

difficult to know exactly the population of
Nicaragua because there is no reliable census. In
the rural areas, parents normally do not
register their children when they are born.
• Ethnic Groups – About 75% are mixed origin of
Hispanic origin and indigenous
• 10% of the population is of Spanish origin and
European descent
• A little fraction of the population is indigenous,
and black descended, (especially in the Atlantic
Cost). Among these indigenous groups are the
miskitos, sumus and ramas, who retain their own
ethnic language
• There is a high percentage of youth, about 70%
is under 30 years of age. It is due to religious and
cultural factors as they are reluctant to use birth
control methods.
• Languages – Spanish ( official) English and
Indigenous dialects of the Atlantic Coast.
• Currency– Córdoba. Actual change rate : US$
1.00 = C$ 18,25.
• Natural disasters: volcanic eruptions,
earthquakes, and hurricanes. The most recent
destructive disaster was Hurricane Mitch, also
called The Poverty Hurricane, which left 2500
persons dead and 800 disappeared. The second most poor country in Latinamerica. More
than 45% live with less than $1 per day.

Phase I – Constructions

• First of all we conducted meetings

with the parents, teachers and
foreman to organize works teams.

• Delivery of the construction materials,

with the corresponding checklist and
control.

• Once all the materials were delivered,

they were stored in good condition
and the community had to take care
of it.

• The microprojects constructions

started on 5th of June and completed
on 2nd of July.

10
Phase I – Construction
Primero de Mayo
– Located in the town of Tuma la Dalia, situated 36 km from Matagalpa.
– 131 children of multi-grade primary school with 3 teachers.
– The principal livelihood in the zone is: Coffee growing.
– The kindergarden doesn’t have a stable place to hold classes but is
conducted in a private house.
– There is electricity and potable water but is available only on certain
hours of the day
– To improve the conditions of hygiene in the preparation and
consumption of the meals it was necesary to install a kitchen with eco-
stove and a multi-purpose sink. The school didn’t have these
installations. TNT contributed to meet this urgent need and with the BEFORE
donations undertook the constructions of the structures.
– Due to the limitation on the availability of the water in the school and
the necessity for the preparation of the meals, Team 13 of TNT-WFP
provided the school with rainwater collection system with water tanks.
– Initiative from the community: they improved the drainage system of
the school.

ADDITIONAL PROJECTS OF VOLUNTEER 13

In conjunction with the official projects, funds were donated to other

activities

Donated paint for the classroom of the preschool and kitchen of

Primero de Mayo as well as the kitchen of Hilipo and Emmanuel
Mongalo Schools. The painting was done by the communities.

17
Other activities
Donations of tooth brush and tooth paste and
workshop about dental hygiene

We wanted to give importance to oral hygiene and after the training we donated to
each kid in the 3 schools, tooth paste and toothbrush.

We explained to the kids how they should

brush their teeth and how important it is to do
it after every meal.

18
Other activities
REFORESTATIONS OF FRUIT TREES

We donated fruit trees (avocado

and mangos)
to improve the diet of the
children

Our intention on the reforestation is to

encourage the kids to take care of the little
trees and contribute to the care of the
environment.

19
Additional activities
Visit to the Nutrition Recovery Center
for Children of Matagalpa
We visited the Nutrition Recovery Center for Children of
Matagalpa often.

The center has a capacity for 20 children with severe levels

of malnutrition

We often went there and played with the kids. We gave

them food and kept them company. Most of all we gave
them the love that they needed so much.

It was one of the most emotional activity for us and to see

the recovery of the little ones day by day made us feel very
happy.

20
Other activities
Drawing contest

We organized a drawing contest in Primero de

Mayo School to see what they know about the
School Feeding Programme.

We donated colored pencils and drawing books

to each boy and girl in the school

It was difficult to choose the winners because all were authentic artists

21
Other activities

We wanted to integrate ourselves with the

communities and work in the kitchen and
helped the mothers to prepare the meals and
give each kids their portion.

We also made trips with

members of the communities to
the visit the cave or the
hanging bridge
.

22
Other activities
Donation of toys for the pre-school and domino sets for the rest of the schools
