General The scanner is located in the lower half of the system cabinet. Capacity is 67 circuit boards and the motherboard. Transducers connect to the motherboard via the TDI board at the front of the system. Though there are two transducer connection ports, only one can be active at a time. Communication between scanner and scan converter is handled by the DBR board via a dual port RAM. Signal from the scanner to the Scan Converter passes through the DBL board. Scanner operation is controlled by the SCP board. SCP is synchronized by the 10 MHz master clock located on the STG Board. Scanner sequence of operation is made up of three processes: Scanner Set-Up Transmission Reception Scanner Set-Up This sequence determines the type and number of lines to be fired by the transducer (based on control and gain settings on the front panel) and passed to the scanner by the scan converter. Beamforming data is acquired from the DCC boards via the B, C, and D buses. At the conclusion of this sequence, the transmission cycle begins. Transmission The SCP board signal causes the XDY board to output the phased transmit pulse to the transmitter boards. Thehigh energy pulse required to drive the elements and produce an ultrasound wave on the probe face is then sent by the XMT board.

Reception The return echo signals from the transducer pass through the TDI board and scanner motherboard (SMB) to the receiver (RCV) boards. The receivers amplify and convert these low level signals to an intermediate frequency (IF), using the added signals from the mixer clock (MXK) boards. Receiver board gain is controlled by a signal from the APD and IGD boards, which also compensate for signal loss (due to depth) and adjust the aperture of the array. The receivers output the IF signal to the SDL boards for summing. Signals then pass to the DBL board to produce the IF SUM signal. The IF SUM signal is sent to the video detector (VDT) board where it is converted to an ultrasound video signal, amplified, and processed. The signal then returns to the DBL board for buffering. Finally, it is sent to the scan converter.

Operating Sequence The scan converter receives analog ultrasound beam data one line at a time from the scanner. Each line is digitized, sampled, converted to pixel format and stored in the digital image memory. The data stored in the image memory is read out, synchronized to the video display rate, converted to a composite video signal, mixed with the overlay graphics, and delivered to the various output display devices. Primary Circuit Boards Each scan converter function is controlled by a printed circuit board inside the scan converter.

Operating Modes 2D Grayscale Operation The scanner sends an ultrasound line (and line identifier) to the scan converter. The line goes to the Input Controller (IC) for initial processing, where it is digitized and sampled. Sampling rate depends upon operator settings, such as field of view and magnification mode (RES). The data samples are sent through the IC for addressing, then to the CMB (under control of the Output Controller, OC) for storage in, and readout from, digital memory. The CMB also handles grayscale processing (post-processing), temporal persistence, and buffer and storage functions. Buffering allows for synchronizing readout with the OC video raster scanning rate. Digital data is read from CMB digital memory to the CVC. Here, digital data is converted to an analog signal, suitable for mixing with CVC overlay and graphics information. The combined data is synchronized to the video raster rate and output to the CSI for distribution to viewing monitors, peripheral displays and recording devices. Spectral Doppler Operation Most processing in this mode is done by the four boards dedicated to spectral and audio processing; DAQ, DSP, DCP and AUD. The DAQ receives the Doppler line data and line identifier signals from the scanner. The line data is made up of BBQ-generated I and Q quadrature analog ultrasound data. The control signals specify the line type as Doppler (instead of grayscale). The DAQ digitizes the I and Q signals and passes data to the DSP through the connecting ribbon cables. The DSP converts the Doppler signal from the time domain to the frequency domain. This allows for display the frequency spectrum of the detected Doppler signal.

System Overview The scanner power supply is inside the power supply drawer, between the wheels. Access can be gained from the rear by removing the filters, cabling, and screws, then sliding it out on rails. The power supply drawer contains four main sections. One section is a 300VDC coarse supply or HV bus. The voltage comes from the 340VAC step-up isolation transformer (T1) secondary winding. A bridge rectifier full wave rectifies the voltage to 300VDC. It is filtered by a large inductor (L2) and capacitor (C3), and applied to Power Distribution Board 2 (PDB2). This DC voltage powers the other three sections of the power supply drawer, each containing a switching regulator (DC-to-DC converter). A fourth power supply is under the scan converter card cage. It is also a switching regulator, using the HV bus as a course supply. The 340VAC isolation transformer also supplies 115VAC to all four switching power supplies, providing housekeeping and control functions. Synchronization for the four power supplies is provided by the clock signal (PERCLK), generated by the Scan Control Processor (SCP) board in the scanner card cage. This signal is processed and distributed by PDB2. PDB2 acts as the power supply control center. If an unusual demand is placed on any of the supplies, PDB2 shuts down the system and displays an error code on the numeric LED. See Error Codes for more information.

Isolation Transformer The Isolation Transformer provides three AC supplies to the system.
Winding First Second Voltage 175VAC 115VAC Power is Sent to Programmable Power Supply Used for control and power switching of: Scanner Analog Supply Scanner Digital Power Supply Scan Converter Power Supply Rectified and supplied to: Scanner Analog Supply Scanner Digital Supply Scan Converter Power Supply
Third
340VAC
These three supplies use 300VDC as both operating supply voltage and system supply voltage source. A 0.5 A fuse protects the rectified and filtered 300VDC. It also protects a 150 Ohm bus load resistor, which protects PDB2 from power surges at power-up. The resistor is on top of PDB2.

Power-Up Sequence When the power switch is activated, PDB2 verifies: fans are active external AC is at least 95VAC temperature-sensing resistor is below 69C
If these conditions are met, the Soft Start circuitry is energized. AC is applied to the Isolation Transformer. AC input is conditioned by an electromagnetic inductance filter and a 47 kOhm bleeder resistor (bleeds filter capacitor charge when system is unplugged from AC outlet). A 12.5 Amp circuit breaker provides overcurrent protection. PDB2 initializes at 450 milliseconds. This pulse times the rise of the 300VDC. If 300VDC does not reach 250VDC in this time, the power supply shuts down on an error. The trailing edge of the pulse checks the 18VDC level from the Scan Converter Power Supply. If this voltage is low or not present, the power supply shuts down on an error. Continued on next page

Power-Up Sequence (continued) Next, the scanner digital power supply activates and STG outputs PERCLK signal. This signal times the switching frequencies of the 3 power supplies (scanner analog, scanner digital, and scan converter). When all these conditions are met: the Power Fail signal goes high, signifying OK condition the yellow CLK LED on PDB2 turns on the Programmable Power Supply activates the 3 power supplies synchronize the 150 Ohm bus load resistor is switched out of the supply line the normal system load takes over the Programmable Power Supply is tested to verifying whether it can adjust voltage levels for system operation

Soft Start Circuitry Soft start circuitry includes: soft start relay 30 Ohm 50 Watt resistor 5 Amp slow blow fuse
When the soft start relay is activated, the resistor and fuse (in series on isolation transformer input side) provide PDB2 with surge protection at power-up. After the soft start relay switches main power into the isolation transformer, they are switched out. When the Soft Start Relay is activated, supply voltages are fed to the PDB2 circuit board. Failure of resistor or fuse creates error #2 on the numeric LED. Power-Down Sequence When the system powers down: the Power Fail signal goes low; the system backs up necessary data to the battery-backed RAM the +5VDC is held high for at least one second the Soft Start Assembly main power relay opens the 150 Ohm bus load resistor switches to discharge the 300VDC lines

Scanner Power-up diagnostics At system power-up, the system runs a series of self-tests. If any self-test fails, the system generates a list of error codes by subassembly. Note Note Tests vary by software level. Revision 27.x and above is currently the most common, due to the Y2K upgrades. A long list of error codes often indicates power supply problem.

Scan Converter Power-up diagnostics At system power-up, the system runs a series of self-tests. If any self-test fails, the system generates a list of error codes by subassembly. Note Note Tests vary by software level. Revision 27.x and above is currently the most common, due to Y2K upgrades. A long list of error codes often indicates power supply problem.
See Error Codes for a list of error codes and related subassemblies.

Power Supplies General A common indicator of a general power supply failure is a long string of power-up error codes. Another indicator is an error code readout on the numeric LED in the power supply drawer. Note If the numeric LED indicates a failure, there are usually other symptoms that indicate another problem, such as total system power-up failure.
Troubleshooting Find and measure the system output voltages. Begin by measuring the AC line voltage to ensure that the 1) system is receiving the proper power. 2) 3) 4) 5) Examine and measure resistance of the power cord. Check fuses in the power supply drawer. (See Theory of Operation for details.) Replace fuses as necessary. Examine the power supply drawer. Under normal operating conditions, the drawer has only one actively glowing LED: the PERCLK LED on the PDB2 board. Any other LED or lamp active indicates a failure. Remove the load from the suspect power supply and test it again. If it functions, try sequentially loading the supply to determine which load is causing it to fail. If it does not function, replace it. Continued on next page

About This EPST The EPST is not intended to replace OEM system documentation. It also does not cover every problem or situation you may encounter while working on the system. There are probably many situations in which it would be helpful to refer to OEM system documentation. The link icons located at the bottom of every page usually take you to the first page of that section. When a link icon takes you to a specific reference, the link icon on the destination page will generally take you to the first page of that section. The setup program will create a text file for every page of this tool for your notes. The files are located at: c:/docs/fc5001/persnote/xxx.txt Personal Notes cannot work if you move these files; the path is hard-coded into the EPST. Personal Notes may not work when the computer is networked. The content of the EPST was derived from the contributions of the people listed in the Credits.
