This document is the user guide for the SymSMB 2.00 system.
1.1 TERMINOLOGY
Abbreviation SIS S60 SMB Definition Symbian OS Installation System Symbian OS Series 60 platform Server Message Block - is an application-level network protocol mainly applied for shared access to files, printers, serial ports, and miscellaneous communications between nodes on a network. CIFS is an enhanced version of Microsoft's open, cross-platform Server SMB protocol, the native filesharing protocol in the Windows 95, Windows NT, and OS/2 operating systems and the standard way that millions of PC users share files across corporate intranets. CIFS is also widely available on Unix, VMS, and other platforms. Common Internet File System - a standard remote file-system access protocol for use over the Internet, enabling groups of users to work together and share documents across the Internet or within corporate intranets. CIFS is an open, cross-platform technology based on the native file-sharing protocols built into Microsoft Windows and other popular PC operating systems, and supported on dozens of other platforms. With CIFS, millions of computer users can open and share remote files on the Internet without having to install new software or change the way they work. SMB system for Symbian

2 INTRODUCTION
SymSMB 2.00 is an application that turns your Symbian S60 3d edition smartphone into a fullyfunctional network file server which other Internet users can access via standard network protocols. In addition, SymSMB 2.00 includes the functionality of a network client which allows a user to access files on the remote computers using the smartphone. In simple terms: - the server component of SymSMB 2.00 allows to share smartphones folders or drives such that they can be accessed from any computer over available transport protocol (Wi-Fi, GPRS, 3D, Bluetooth, etc.). Thus you can access files on the smartphone as if it was connected to the computer via cable in the transfer mode; - the client component of SymSMB 2.00 allows one to manipulate files on any computer/server for which the smartphone user has access permissions. Main benefits of SymSMB 2.00: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. There is no need to use any wires; There is no need for complementary software on the computer. So nothing like PC Suite, drivers or such needs to be installed: All smartphones drives can be accessed: C: (phone memory), D: (RAM), Z: (ROM), E: (Memory Card/HDD): The connected smartphone is fully functional (receive incoming calls, use other applications, etc.): Files on the smartphone can be accessed not just from one but multiple computers.
SymSMB uses CIFS (/SMB) standard. CIFS (Common Internet File System) is a remote file access protocol that runs over the Internet. It also allows joint access to files. SMB (Server Message Block) is a standard protocol used by most modern operating systems (Windows, Linux, Mac, UNIX) for remote file access at the application level (this means at the minimum that a casual user will not need to know this.)

SymSMB will work properly. However, we believe that Wi-Fi is the most appropriate wireless medium for our product. The application has been tested on the following devices: Nokia E60; Nokia E61; Nokia E70; Nokia N80; Nokia N91; Nokia N91 8G; Nokia N93. Nokia N93i; Nokia N95;
It is expected that SymSMB 2.00 will work normally with the upcoming: Nokia E61i; Nokia E65; Nokia E90;
3.1 PRE-REQUISITES
Before installing, ensure that the phone supports any Data bearer (WLAN is most recommended). Make sure that you are in the range of a selected bearer (for example WLAN router). Generally speaking, the access point aspect is out of scope of our application. We rely completely on the S60 platform connectivity API. An access point of any possibly bearer types can be used.

Thus, before using the application go to \Application\Tools\Settings\Connection\Access Points\ and create an appropriate Access Point, if needed. Be sure it works properly (lets say, try to connect to Internet through it, using Service application).

statement dialog to appear. Please, read it carefully. Use Done to proceed, if you prefer to get this info every time when starting up. To disable this message use Option\Dont show this again.
After that you will see the End User License Agreement. Please, read it carefully and indicate your decision by pressing Accept or Decline button. Decline leads to the application closure. Accept means that you agree with EULA and therefore can use the application.
4.2 HOW TO USE FILE BROWSER 4.2.1 Main application page navigation
SymSMB 2.00 main application page is a browser view. At a first launch the browser shows only the internal phone drives. After some tuning manipulations via Options > Settings remote shared network drives will appear in this browser view as well (see 4.3.8). Options > Setting also allows a user to configure and to control access to internal shared folders externally.

There is not too much interesting on these drives for regular customers. On the other hand accessing these drives can cause some trouble for the phones vitality. Thats why we have disabled an access to drives D: and Z: in SymSMB 2.00
4) Network drives section lists external network locations which can be accessed from this phone. The following can be set up via Settings: Which local drives be accessed and by whom (i.e. server settings; see 4.3.2); Which external drives can be accessed by the smartphone (i.e. client settings; see 4.3.3).
Navigation between setting sections is done using Up and Down keys. To enter the section press Select or Right. To leave the section press Left or Back. The following operations are available for all setting sections via Options: New; Edit; Delete.

4) Assign users and their permissions to the shared folders. Read/Write permissions are assigned when the share is created; they can be modified thereafter when editing the settings for the shares (see 4.3.6-4.3.7).
4.3.3
To describe shared resources of network computers that can be accessed using the phone, 2 steps are required: 1) Create user accounts that have permissions to access the computer (using Accounts; same users can be used by both server and client components; see 4.3.4); 2) Describe shared network computer resources (using Network drives; see 4.3.8);
4.3.4.1 Some tips for server side account creation 4.3.4.1.1 PC account properties inheritance
Although it is not mandatory, it would be beneficial to create the same account as you have on your favourite PC from where you plan to access phones file storage more often. This will allow you in the future to access phones shares from your PC without Connect using a different user name option. If you decide to create an account according to your PC configuration use the following rule for Domain name. If your computer is a part of domain or user group you should pick a Domain name:

4.3.4.1.2
In general when mapping a phone drive using Connect using a different user name method of Explorer > Tools > Map Network Drive... (see 4.4.2.1.1), anything can be entered in the Account fields. The most important step is to repeat the same input in the Connect using a different user name dialog.

Example: \\MyPhone\DiskEMusic Use this network name on your PC to map this network drive. Access point: describes the connection method. There are two options for this field: Always ask means that any time you will start a connection it will offer you a list of existing access points to choose from. This method is beneficial if you decide to use a single connection descriptor for SymSMB and select an access point depending on where SymSMB is used. Lets say using the same connection you can connect to you phone from your work and from your home. However, every time you should choose an appropriate access point. User defined allow you to bind a connection and an access point rigidly. In this situation you will have a separate connection descriptor for every location where you are going to use SymSMB 2.00. Any access point can be used (Wi-Fi, GPRS, 3D, Bluetooth, etc). Typically the access point should be a Wi-Fi (WLAN) router in your home or office network. To create an access point, go to "Menu\Tools\Settings\Connection\Access point" (see sections 3.1). Auto connect: There are two options for the auto connect field. Option Yes means that SymSMB 2.00 will try to establish connection every time phone is in charging mode. Auto connect can not be used for "Always ask" access points.
The Options menu in the Connections section has the following additional operations: Start connects to the network using the selected connection (see 4.4.1); Stop disconnects the selected connection from the network (see 4.4.3).

Use this network name on your PC to map this network drive. Choose a local drive or a folder you want to share.
After the share is created, SymSMB 2.00 will prompt a message suggesting to add permission to this share. Adding permissions to the share is needed to specify access type of the accounts to the share.
Read permission allows reading directories and files. Write permission allows creating, modifying, deleting, renaming and writing to the files and directories.

After the network drive is specified it appears on the browser screen and is ready to use (if the assigned access point is operational).
The Options menu in the Network drives section has the following additional operations: Enable/Disable by default, the network drive is enabled. When the network drive is enabled, it is displayed in the main application screen. To hide it there, select Disable.

When a minimal configuration considered in the previous section is done, the main function of the system can be used. In order to initiate the server service offered by SymSMB 2.00 you have to fulfil two steps: start a connection; map phones shared folders on your PC;
Corresponding access point activity is displayed on the screen as well. In our case you can notice WLAN activity icon .
To stop an active connection, use Options\Stop option. Another way to start a connection is to use an enabled Auto connect feature of a created connection insert a charger and available connection will automatically be started.
An access to your Phone from your PC can be prearranged in several ways: as a mapped drive; as a drive from My Network Places;

Drive mapping
Use regular Map Network Drive process. Please, remember, that the folder you are mapping is \\<connection name>\<share name> (see sections 4.3.5 and 4.3.6).
If you have created a user account according to the existing account on you PC (see 4.3.4.1.1), you will be automatically mapped to your phones folder:

PUBLIC
Otherwise (see 4.3.4.1.2) you will be asked for the user name and password.
4.4.2.1.2
You can enter the phones resource name directly in Address field of Explorer:
As a result the phones shared folder would be accessible via My Network Places\Entire Network\...
SymSMB_UserGuide_2.0.doc
Page 18 of 26

Another method to access the phones shared folder is Start\Run. Initiate Start\Run and open the desired folder as a regular Internet resource.
After that you can access your phone storage ordinarily via Explorer:
4.4.2.1.3
A shortcut usage
One can decide that rather than mapping a shared drive, its faster to create a shortcut to the network location and use it if necessary. This generally does not slow down using My Computer/Explorer which constantly attempts to check if the network drive is already on.

4.4.2.2 Linux
This section includes examples of accessing smartphones shared folders (shared by SymSMB 2.0) from Linux Ubuntu, version 6.10 (www.ubuntu.com). Procedures on other Linux systems should be similar but may differ in details one from another. Differences can be in the mount command syntax as well as in the UI part. Please refer to your Linux documentation regarding such details. There are at least 2 ways to connect a shared folder from Linux.
4.4.2.2.1
Please refer to Linux documentation for the full list of mount command parameters on your system. For Ubuntu you can use this: sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.101/share_name /home_folder -o username=<>,password=<>,domain=<> where: 192.168.1.101 is IP Address of your Phone; share_name is a name of your shared folder on the Phone; /home Linux folder (existing) that the share will be mapped to; username, password and domain you Phone Account specification.
So you need to start from creating an empty folder in Linux native file system to be the home for your share:
Then you need to open a Terminal window and run a mount command:
SymSMB_UserGuide_2.0.doc
Page 20 of 26
PUBLIC
Finally you can access your shared Phone folder by accessing the home Linux folder:
4.4.2.2.2
Another way to map your Phone shared folder is using Ubuntu high level user interface. Start from menu Places\Connect to Server and choose Service type Windows share in opened dialog:
Specify required information (except password) and press Connect. You will get a new Icon on your desktop with small red sign SMB:
SymSMB_UserGuide_2.0.doc

And here we are, our shared folder is available from the File Browser:
SymSMB_UserGuide_2.0.doc
Page 22 of 26
PUBLIC
4.4.2.2.3
When you use mount, your shared folder is available as if it is a native Linux file system folder; there is no difference. All applications can use it natively; you can even share it again as a Linux share, using SAMBA for example. And after that do something silly like access it from your Phone using SymSMB 2.00 client When you use a high level, your share is not inside the File System, but near it (see left pane of the last picture). It is available through the so called VFS (Virtual File System). So it will be available only for those applications that understand VFS (fortunately most, if not all, of high level applications like File Browser or OpenOffice.org do).
4.4.2.3 Mac
Procedure for MAC is very similar to the Linux one. Except you need to use mount_smbfs command instead of mount. Please check you manual for the command syntaxes. If you prefer high level UI interface, you can find more details here: http://lifehacker.com/software/mac-os-x/how-to-mount-a-windows-shared-folder-on-your-mac247148.php
4.4.3
When all configurations within the system are done and your PC has the mapping information, you can activate the system to access phones shared folders only by starting the desired connection (see 4.4.1). If you have used SymSMB 2.00 UI application to start it, do not forget to stop it when you finished. In Auto connect case a connection will be stopped as soon as you will remove a charger.

5 BILLING WARNINGS
As mentioned in 2.3, connection to and use of the Internet from your cell phone is typically not free. Whether or not you will be charged can be found out from your local service provider. At any point SymSMB 2.00 will prompt a warning in case a user action may lead to any charges. For instance, if Auto Connect mode (4.3.5) is selected during configuration: In the second case, if the connection is started via Option\Start (4.4.1): If the any charges do not suit you, you can always choose not to use the program.

So, you have to go to our web-site www.telexy.com and buy a full licence.
When a licence has been bought, you can finalize the registration process on you phone. Select Register option in any situation mentioned above and select Yes in the following two dialogs. Next, the standard Internet download procedure will be initiated. Indicate an appropriate access point in response to the Internet Service request and wait a little (it could take several seconds)

while the process will be completed. Successful downloading will be indicated. Press Ok to register.
7 UNINSTALL NOTICE
As it was already mentioned in 2.1, SymSMB 2.00 consists of UI application and several servers. Servers usually work all the time, whereas UI application is launched only by the user request. Thus, if a customer decides to uninstall the application and starts an uninstall procedure, one will meet the situation when all the systems servers are running. This fact will lead to the following additional request. If you chose Ok option, then the uninstall procedure will successfully complete. However, any this situation requests. does not satisfy why the Symbian offers standards. a special
According to Symbian requirements uninstall should go smoothly without additional Thats Symbian recommendation for such a situation that we have with SymSMB here:
NB: In the case of products which are not applications that show up in the task list because of their nature but are used within other applications (e.g. Front End Processors or FEPs), an appropriate host application already on the should be started and closed, to ensure that application still exits correctly. (see Symbian
Signed Test Criteria. Version 2.11.0, section 5.5) To adhere to this recommendation, the following actions should be undertaken before uninstall: 1) Start SymSMB application; 2) Run Options\Shutdown from the main application view.
