ADVANCED DOMAIN & RANGE

EXAMPLE OF DOMAIN AND RANGE: The height of a football is a function of the time that the ball has been in flight. h(x) = -5x2 + 20x practical domain: x > 0 (cant have negative time) BUT you also cant have a ball go underground (which happens after 4 seconds) SO the practical domain would be 0 < x < 4 or x is between 0 and 4 seconds. practical range: y > 0 since the ball must be on the ground (y=0) or higher. It also cant go higher than 20 meters, as shown by the graph. Therefore, the practical range of the function is: 0 < h(x) < 20 or h(x) must be between 0 and 20 meters.

theoretical domain: Looking only at the equation, table, and graph, (and not the problem situation)there is no x value that I couldnt put into the equation h(x) = -5x2 + 20x. Therefore the theoretical range would be x {all real numbers}. You can also write x or - < x < . In other words, x can be any real number OR x can be anything. theoretical range: The output (y-values) that will be produced by the graph of y =-5x2 + 20x will produce numbers that are always less than 20 (look at the table and the graph). They will go down to negative infinity, but only as high as 20. Therefore, the theoretical domain of the function is h(x) < 20 or h(x) must be less than or equal to 20 meters.
