Pre-school Education

Pre-school education refers to optinal education for


3-5-year-children before primary education.
İn 2006-2007 Education year, 549.604 students
attended primary schools and 22.789 teachers
worked in these schools.
Primary Education

Primary Education is for children from 6 to 14 years


of age.
Primary Education is 8 years and is compulsory for
every male and female Turkish citizen. Education is
uninterrupted for a period of 8 years.
İn 2006-2007 Education year, 10,331,752 students
received education in 34,990 schools and 392,481
teachers worked in these schools.

Secondary Education
Secondary Education covers general and vocational
tecnical secondary schools which provide a
minumum of for years of education for primary
school graduates.
Secondary education consists of two parts.
genarelsecondary schools
vocational tecnical schools.
General Secondary Education
2. General Secondary Schools= No examination is required for
the etrance. These schools offer a four-year education
program.
3. Anatolian High Schools: Students have to sit for an
examination to attend these schools. Education is generally
four years.However, in some schools it is five years with the
preparatory year.
4. Science Schools: An entrance examination is required. They
offer a four-year education program.
5. Social Sciences High School: An entrance examination is
required. They offer a five-year education program.
6. Anatolian Teacher Training High Schools: An entrance
examination is required.thay offer a four-year education
program.
7. Science and Technology High Schools: There is only one of
this type. It offers a five-year education program including the
preparatory year.

Commercial and Tourism Education Schools
Religious Education Schools
Technical schools require an entrance examination
while others do not. Education period is four years.

Higher Education

Higher Education refers to institutions of higher


learning lasting at least two years based on
secondary education.
Students may enroll to a higher education program
with or without an entrance examination.

Private Schools
 The activities of these institutions are regulated by the Ministry of National
Education.
 İn 2006-2007 Education year, 320,029 students attended 1.598 private primary
and secondary private schools.
 The ratio of private primary education is 2.2%, and it is 2.9% for private
secondary education. The total ratio of private education in Turkey is 2.3%.

From primary to secondary education
 The new ststem OGES (a system which qualities students for
secondary education)

 OGES will cover


1- The central examination to evaluate their levels (SBS)
2- Annual success grades (YBP)
3- Overall attitude grades (DP)

of students in 6th ,7th and 8th years of primary education.


The entrance point is calculated by taking into account 70% of SBS,
25% of YBP, and 5% of DP for all three years.

 With this system 230.000 students out of 1.300.000 will be
qualified to get in to schools which accept students through
examination. Unqualified students can get into general high
schools or vocational technical schools.
 İt is not compulsory to take OGES. However, students who
do not take it are given the lowest points and they are
automatically out of the system.

University Entrance Examination (ÖSS): İt is a compulsory
examination to get into universities.

 The examination is open to high school graduates and to final-


year-students in high schools.
 Vocational secondary school students may continue their
education in their own fields at a higher education program for
two year without an examination.

 Öss consists of two parts and eight sub-exams. Students


have to answer questions relating the subjects they
received in their high school education.

 Questions are prepared to be difficult and selective in order


to choose the hardworking and talented students.

 ÖSS is carried out once a year throughout the country.
 The duration of the exam is three hours and 15 minutes. İt
is carried out in the second week of june.
 One booklet containing questions on all subjects (Math,
Science, Turkish, Social sciences) is given.
 Each consists of 30 questions. Total is 240 questions.
 Students may answer 180 questions. (120 questions in the
first part, 60 questions in the second.)

 The results are announced within one month.
 Overall success points are calculated by adding the points
the students got through the exam and school success
point.

 Students are asked to answer questions in the fields which
they did at high school. (Science, Turkish-Math, Social
Sciences, Languages) Weighted Quantitive Composite for
engineering and Medical School, Equally Weighted
Composite for Law,Psychology and Management,
Weighted Verbal Composite for Media Studies, Geography
and History.
 Candidates are required to send their preference form
within two weeks. Their maximum number of choices is
fixed at 24. Candidates are placed in higher education
programs by using two different methods: Central
Placement and selection through a special skills
examination.

About 207.000 students are able to get into four-
year programs of higher education. İt is 11.7% of
the total number of candidates.
About 208.000 students from vocational tecnical
high schools is 325.557

A-Historical Background:
Private Tutoring İnstitutions gained their present rights
with the regulation dating 08.06.1965
However, their status was highly argued.
İt was decided all the private tutoring institutions
be shut down with the regulation dated
16.06.1983 within a year that is 31.07.1984
A new regulation was accepted by National
AAssembly to carry on their activities on 11. July.
1984.

B-Functions:
İn their first years, private Tutoring İnstitutions
prepared students to get into higher education.
Later they started to give them extra help for
their school studies.

İn recent years, some Private Tutoring


İnstitutions have also been doing courses on
special subjects such as Residency Examination
for Medical Doctors (TUS).
İn the beginnig there some in big cities only.
Nowadays they are even in smallest towns.

They formed their own brands and now they


operate in chain store basis.

While argued a lot by some circle, their position


in Turkish Edution system is unquestionable.

STUDENTS FEES AND TEACHERS’
WAGES
Student fees can differ from region to region.
While on hour costs 8 ytl in İstanbul, it can be 3
YTL in another part of turkey.
Teachers’ wages do not change a lot from region
to region. İt is approximately 35 YTL an hour.
The only income for private tutaring institutions is
the fee they get from students. However, their
expenditure has to cover 61 items such as
teachers ‘ wages, building rents, insurance,
taxes and etc.
D-PROGRAMS
Private Tutoring İnstitutions offer full-day
programs on weekends and private tuitions and
supplementary courses on weedays.

They offer courses to high school graduates on


four weekdays.

All the curriculum is passed on the students


through tests.

The student’s progress is observed by giving
exam periodically.

The lessons are revised and students are


supported by extra materials.

For example ; a university candidate is made to


attend 500 hours of lectures, 500 hours of private
tuition, and is required to solve around 50.000
sample questions.

The fee is received in installments

prepared one year in advance.

most influencial and best contacts with abroad. İt has 525

The school was founded in 2006. İt is the only science and


technology high school in Turkey which has the world standards.
İt has 72 students, 33 academic staff and 17 administrative staff.
