EndNoteisabibliographicmanagementandresearchsoftwareprogram.WithEndNoteyoucansearch databasesonline,organizereferencesaswellascitereferences,instantlyformatandchangeyour bibliographyandshareyourlibrary.Inadditionyoucanattachimages,PDFsandotherfilestocitationsin yourlibrary,makingthemeasiertoaccess. EndNoteisavailableforWindowsandMaccomputers.Thecampusbookstoreoffersstudents(butnot facultyorstaff)adiscountonpurchase.Librariansareavailabletoassistusersandteachworkshopson EndnotehoweverEndNoteisnotavailableforpersonaluseonlibrarycomputers. EndNoteX2isthelatestversionofEndNoteandhasfeaturesnotavailableinearlierversions.Becauseof changesinthesoftwarewesuggestworkingwithEndNote9orhigher. Thefollowingguidehasbeenpreparedbylibrarystafftoprovideyouwithuptodateinformationabout usingEndNoteX2.
PreparingyourEndNoteLibrary
SettingUpanEndNoteLibrary 1. OpenEndNote.IftheGetStartedwithEndNotescreenappears,selectCreateanewEndNoteLibrary andclickOK.Otherwise,selectFilethenNew.... 2. Giveyournewlibraryanameandsaveitinalocationthatmakessensetoyou. InstallingEndNotesListofMedicalJournalTitlesandAbbreviations Beforeyoubeginaddingreferencestoyourlibraryconsiderthatsomecitationstylesusejournals'complete titles;othersuseabbreviations.EndNotecanmakethenecessarychanges,butonlyifthelistoftitlesis importedbeforereferencesareaddedtotheEndNotelibrary: 3. FromtheToolsmenu,selectDefineTermLists,thenclickonJournals. 4. ClicktheImportListbutton.NavigatetothefolderwhereEndNoteisinstalled(usuallyC:\Program Files\EndNote)andopentheTermListsfolder.(Ifyoudonotknowwheretheprogramfileis,orcannot accessit,contactthepersonwhoinstalledEndNoteonyourcomputer.) 5. Doubleclickonmedical.txt.Afterthetermsareinstalled,clickOK.

Import Option: Click on the down arrow next to Import Option to see filters that have been used before.Selectthedatabasefromwhichyoudownloadedyourcitations. Ifthedatabaseyouneedisntthere,clickOtherFiltersandselectthedesireddatabase. Duplicates: This lets EndNote know what to do if it finds identical citations. BesuretousetherightReferenceType.ThedefaultisJournalArticle,butotherchoicesinthepull downmenuincludeBookSection(usedforbookchapters)andThesis.Whenyouchange ReferenceTypes,EndNoteautomaticallypromptsyouforfieldsneededforthattype(editors names,chapterauthorsnames,etc.). Ingeneral,youdontneedtouseanypunctuationwhenentering(someexceptionsarelisted below). Remembertoproofreadyourbibliography!Theremaybesmallformattingerrorsoreventyposthat youshouldcorrectmanually.Ifyoufindmajorformattingerrors,makesureyouareusingthecorrect outputstyle.Ifyoustillseemajorformattingerrors,checkoutthe"EndNoteTips&Troubleshooting" handoutforhelpeditingastyle. 11. IfyouaresubmittingthedocumentelectronicallyespeciallytoapublisherwhoseInstructionsto AuthorssaynottouseEndNoteyouwillneedtoremovethefieldcodes.ClickConvertCitationsand BibliographyfromtheEndNoteribbon'sBibliographypanel.ThenselectConverttoPlainText.Word willcreateanewcopyofyourdocument,removingEndNote'sfieldcodesandleavingthefully formattedbibliography.Savethisdocumentunderanewname,andsubmitittothepublisher.
Besuretokeeptheoriginalversionofyourdocumentwiththefieldcodes,incaseyouneedtomakeanychanges: EndNotecannotworkwithadocumentthathasbeenconvertedtoplaintext,soifyouneedtomakechangesyou willhavetohavetheoriginaldocumenttoworkwith.
MovinganEndNoteLibrarytoAnotherComputer
IfyouneedtomoveyourEndNoteLibrarytoanothercomputer,orwanttoshareitwithanotherEndNote user,youwillneedtomovetwoseparateparts,whichwillbelocatedinthesamefolder.Thesetwoparts areyourEndNoteLibrary,whichwillhavetheextension.enl,andafolderwiththesamenameasyour EndNoteLibrary,butwitha.Dataextension. InEndNoteX2,thesetwofilescanbecompressedintoasinglefile,whichmakesmovingthefileor attachingittoanemailmessagesimple.FromtheFilemenuselectCompressedlibrary.Youhavethe optiontoCreateacompressedlibrarywhichwillcreatethefileandsavetoyourcomputerortoCreate& Emailwhichwillopenyouremailandautomaticallyattachthecompressedlibrary.Thelibraryanddatafile willbecompressedintoasinglefilewitha.enlxextension.Toopenthisfile,simplydoubleclickit(note: therecipientmusthaveEndNoteversion9orlatertoopenthefile).
