Community fund announces remianing grant awards
The Directors of the Montcalm
Panhandle Community Fund are very
pleased to announce that the remainder
of available grant funds for this year has
been awarded to Maple Valley Township
for the beneft of their annual Coral Days
Festival.
There was a total of $3,000 avail-
able to be awarded this year. $1,350 was
previously awarded to the Timothy C.
Hauenstein Reynolds Township Library
for their teen and tween reading pro-
grams.
An additional $1,000 was awarded to
Three Fires Little League to assist in the
development of a baseball feld for disad-
vantaged children.
The grant for the Coral Days Fes-
tival is in the amount of $650 and will
be used to aid in the celebration of the
150th anniversary celebration of Coral
that will occur next year. This grant
award supplements other fundraising
activities including spaghetti dinners,
pancake breakfasts, and other fund rais-
ing events.
The 150th anniversary celebration
will showcase the history of Coral and is
an event that is expected to draw visitors
from many surrounding communities.
With this grant award, more than
$16,000 of total grants have been giv-
en since the inception of the Montcalm
Panhandle Community fund and the
funds assets are soon expected to exceed
$110,000. Applications for grants gen-
erally occur in the summer of each year
with grant recipients announced in early
September.

Stage play
brings area
families
together
Christmas is certainly a time when most
people gather with family and friends for fun
and frivolity. Its just a given nowadays. Fami-
lies look for creative ways to enjoy the tidings
of the season. Some volunteer their time at a
soup kitchen, some might wander their neigh-
borhood streets singing Christmas carols and
some might hop in the car one evening and
drive miles just to look at thousands of Christ-
mas lights.
But, for a small group of people in northern
Kent County, theyve chosen to celebrate their
Christmas holidays by taking to the stage. The
cast and crew of The Christmas Carol, which
numbers well over 40, is comprised largely of
people who just happen to be related to each
other.
The production director boasts that its
truly a family affair.
Its wonderful to see so many families in-
volved in such a fashion, said Terri Riggle,
production stage director. Theyre having fun
and spending a lot of time together in a worth-
while project.
Ebenezer Scrooge, is played by Rockfords
Virgil Hubbard, and his wife, Kathleen, whos
making her acting debut on the Kent Theatre
stage, is playing the wife of the character Fred,
Scrooges nephew. Cedar Springs resident Russ
Cole, whos Bob Cratchit, is also given singing
direction under the guidance of his wife Carol-
ee, whos the productions music director, and
Laura Johnson, who plays Christmas Present,
also enjoys being on stage with her son, Tom,
who plays Young Scrooge.
And the list continues. There are two
mother and daughter combinations, Judy and
BreAnna Schulz of Howard City and Eva Wal-
ters and her daughter, Mystic also from How-
ard City. Then theres the Price family, all from
Cedar Springs, who have four out of their fve
members involved in the play. Jon, the father,
is playing dual roles of Mr. Fezziwig and the
Ghost of Christmas Future, his wife, Tammy,
is Mrs. Fezziwig, son Jordan is Dick Wilkins

Edward Sagorski
PIERSON Mr. Edward Sagorski,
70, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 12,
2011.
He was a
graduate of Ce-
dar Springs High
School. Ed served
his country in the
U.S. Army dur-
ing the Vietnam
War. He worked
as a supervisor for
Gordon Manufac-
turing. Ed was a
former Pierson Township Supervisor.
He was a member of the Glenn Hill
Post #287 American Legion. After his
retirement, he fulflled his passion
of being a full-time babysitter for his
grandchildren. He always had a gar-
den which seemed to get bigger each
year. He looked forward to the yearly
trip to Brimley with his two brothers,
in hopes of walking away from the ca-
sino with at least gas money to return
home. He often stopped at the Stage
Stop for a quick cup of coffee and con-
versation with many friends.
Ed is survived by his loving wife,
Barbara; children, Pat Sagorski,
Gregory Sagorski,and Lianne Den-
sham, and Angie and Jamie Bucholtz;
grandchildren, Noah, Kaela and Is-
sac; brothers and sisters, John and
Barbara Sagorski, James and Nancy
Sagorski, Joanne Robinson, Stan-
ley and Pat Sagorski Jr., Rev. Fr.
Peter A. Sagorski, George and Kay
Rae Sagorski, Mary Ann and Loren
Dragoo, Frank and Cathie Sagorski,
and Marnie and Karl Keifer; sister-
in-law, Mrs. Shirley Sagorski; aunts,
Sister Albert, O.P., and Sister Rose
Serphine, O.P.; numerous nieces and
nephews; in-laws, Marie and Dave
VanMale, John Morris and Rich and
Nancy Morris. He was preceded in
death by his brothers, Donald and Jo-
seph, his parents, Stanley and Helen
Sagorski; father and mother-in-law,
Orual and Bertha Morris; sisters-in-
law, Lee Sagorski and mary Sagorski
and nephew, Andrew. The Mass of
Christian Burial took place at Mary
Queen of the Apostles in Sand Lake
with Rev. Msgr. Edward A. Hankie-
wicz presiding. Military honors under
the auspices of the Kent County Veter-
ans Honor Guard. Arrangements were
entrusted to the Pederson Funeral
Home, Rockford.
Marian Bonine
Smith
Marian Bonine Smith, 94, of Coral,
passed away at Twin Oaks Retirement
Home in Gowen on Nov. 21, 2011.
She was born Nov. 14, 1917, in Tru-
fant, the daughter of Burt and Lillian
(Brown) Eurick. She enjoyed ceram-
ics, farming, painting, baking as well
as making wedding cakes.
Surviving are her grandchildren,
Dan (Neta) Block, Barb (Ron) She-
ler, Jim Block, Steve Smith, Deb
(Paul) Fitzner; two great nephews,
Jim (Carolyn) Brown and Jon Brown;
one great niece, Janet (Bill) Hoch and
many great-grandchildren and great-
nieces and nephews. She was preced-
ed in death by her parents; husband,
Clarence; a son, Donald; a daughter,
Dorothy; two brothers, Lloyd and
Earl; and two sisters, Grace Bodell
and Blanche Brown.
Funeral services will take place on
Saturday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Wes
Smith offciating with burial in the
Coral Cemetery. Friends may call at
the Heckman Funeral home on Satur-
day from 10 a.m. until time of services
at 11 a.m.

bination of Leah and Andrew Woltansus
from Kent City who are playing the Ghost
of Christmas Past and Peter Cratchit, re-
spectively. Howard City resident Jennifer
Nind is the production stage assistant and
is mother to Michael who is playing the
Young Errand Boy. Cedar Springs resident
Scott Phillips plays ghoulish Jacob Marley
and his wife Dani is a special effects and
lighting technician.
This production promises to be an en-
gaging evening of live stage performances
which includes not only acting, but singing
and little dancing thrown in just for fun,
Riggle said. Bring your family. Theres no
better way to start the holiday season than
seeing this Christmas classic brought to
life.
Charles Dickens The Christmas Car-
ol, adapted by Brian Way and produced
through special arrangements with Bak-
ers Plays and the Cedar Springs Theatre
Association, will be opening Friday, Dec. 9
at 7:30 on the Kent Theatre stage in down-
town Cedar Springs. The production runs
through Dec. 11 with performances at 2
p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, the 10th,
and a fnal matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday,
Dec. 11. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4
for kids 11 and under. Theyre available
at the Cedar Springs Public Library or by

John Edward Gould
John Edward Gould, 84, of Sand Lake, died Mon-
day, Nov. 14, 2011, at his home.
Ed was born July 29, 1927, in
Sand Lake, the son of Glenn and
Elizabeth (Bradley) Gould. He grew
up on a small farm just outside the
town of Sand Lake. He was part of a
family of 10 brothers and sisters: Au-
drey, Charles, Wayne, Joe, Glenice,
Art, Judy, Sim and Guy. Ed served
in the Army for two years after he
graduated from Sand Lake School.
When he returned home, he married
Marian Wulff on Nov. 29, 1947. Ed and Marian were
always together with smiles on their faces. They were
a match made in heaven. Ed and Marian raised their
fve children, John, Larry, Bill, Steve and Susan. During
his childrens younger years he was a Boy Scout leader,
helped with youth boxing and coached baseball teams.
We all remember Ed as a hard worker. He worked as a
welder at a few small companies. He worked in main-
tenance at Wolverine World Wide. He served as union
president. He retired after 20 years of dedication. He
was an active man. Prior to his diagnosis of Parkinsons
disease, he stayed busy. He loved the outdoors, hunt-
ing, fshing, camping and golfng. He spent many win-
ters in Florida where he could enjoy them year round.
Like most of the Goulds he loved his tractors, JOHN
DEERE tractors. He also enjoyed visiting Buckley for
the annual Antique Tractor Show. Ed was a family man.
His grandchildren were his life. Grandpa and Grandma
Goulds house was visited often. It was where memories
were made. Taking us on trips to the cabin in Idlewild,
smelt dipping and camping. John Edward Goulds leg-
acy is strong.
Surviving are his wife, Marian (Wulff) Gould; fve
children, John Gould, Larry Gould, Steve Gould, Bill
Gould and Sue (Jim) Pike; 16 grandchildren; 41 great-
grandchildren; fve great-great-grandchildren; broth-
ers and sisters, Charles (Betty) Gould, Wayne (Crystal)
Gould, Joe (Lena) Gould, Judy (Jerry) Troupe, Glenice
(Ken) VanLoozenoord, Art (Linda) Gould, Sim (Patsy)
Gould and Guy (Marilyn) Gould. He was preceded in
death by his parents; sister, Audrey Anderson; daugh-
ter-in-law, Sarah Gould and great-grandson, Deven
Gould. We will all miss your laughter and smile. The
family received friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 at Bliss-Witters & Pike Fu-
neral Home, Cedar Springs where services were held
on Nov. 18 with Darryl Miller offciating. Interment at
Sand Lake Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be
made to the Parkinsons Foundation.
Harry Eugene Hackbardt
Harry Eugene Hackbardt, 80, of Howard City, loving
husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grand-
father, went to be with his Lord on
Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011, at his home
with his family by his side.
Harry honorably served four
years in the U.S. Navy. In 1953, he
married Rose Mary Bennitt. Soon
after, they worked hand-in-hand
farming and raising fve children. He
worked as a custodian at Tri County
Area Schools where he mentored
many youth. Harry loved people,
and always encouraged others to make good choices.
He was devoted to his faith in the Lord. Harry served
in many community associations Ensley Zoning and
Planning Board, Tri County Area School Board, Farm
Bureau and the South Ensley United Methodist Church
committees. He was humbled when he was given the
opportunity to speak at the 1994 graduation com-
mencement, where he dared students to have faith in
the Creator, in their dreams, to share their possessions,
and to be thankful for the country they live in. Harry
will be remembered for his strong faith, smile, laugh,
kindness, energy, love of family and friends, incredible
love for life, and his tenacity in work. He was a public
servant. Harry was a very, very special man and an in-
tegral part of the community. Harry left us a legacy of
good faith, good works and good will. He was an impor-
tant part of our lives, simply a good man. God will say
Well done, good and faithful servant. He was always
the same positive, easy-going person, who brought
smiles to everyone.
Harry was preceded in death by his wife, Rose. He
is survived by his children, Sam and Julie (McBride),
Kim and Kimberly (Baxter), Pam (Hackbardt) Castle,
Bob and Angie (Hackbardt) Anderson, Dan and Lana
(Richard); grandchildren, Joseph, Spencer and Becky,
Marissa, Hanson, Janel, Hannah, Kaylee, Kelvin, Kelsy,
Karmen, Kiana; great grandson, Quincen; siblings, Al-
bert and Marge Hackbardt, Glen Hackbardt, and Marie
and Roger Sickelsteel; sister-in-law, Dorothy Krampe.
The family received friends on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at
Resurrection Life Church, 3233 10 Mile Rd., Rock-
ford where a memorial service was held. Pastors Larry
Young and Jorge Ballivian offciating. Memorial con-

Cliff Harper
Cliff Harper, 70, of Howard City, passed away Nov.
20, 2011, at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus.
He was born Feb. 9, 1941, in Sault St. Marie, On-
tario, Canada, the son of Walter and Vera (Middaugh)
Harper. During his working years he worked as a crane
operator as well as a truck driver for most of his life.
Cliff loved to spend time talking to others.
In 1993 he married Nancy Vandyke, who survives.
Also surviving are one brother, Frank (Bernice) of On-
tario; three sisters, Rita Conway of Ontario, Mary Daigle

PIERSON Mr. Edward Sagorski,
70, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 12,
2011.
He was a
graduate of Ce-
dar Springs High
School. Ed served
his country in the
U.S. Army dur-
ing the Vietnam
War. He worked
as a supervisor for
Gordon Manufac-
turing. Ed was a
former Pierson Township Supervisor.
He was a member of the Glenn Hill
Post #287 American Legion. After his
retirement, he fulflled his passion
of being a full-time babysitter for his
grandchildren. He always had a gar-
den which seemed to get bigger each
year. He looked forward to the yearly
trip to Brimley with his two brothers,
in hopes of walking away from the ca-
sino with at least gas money to return
home. He often stopped at the Stage
Stop for a quick cup of coffee and con-
versation with many friends.
Ed is survived by his loving wife,
Barbara; children, Pat Sagorski,
Gregory Sagorski,and Lianne Den-
sham, and Angie and Jamie Bucholtz;
grandchildren, Noah, Kaela and Is-
sac; brothers and sisters, John and
Barbara Sagorski, James and Nancy
Sagorski, Joanne Robinson, Stan-
ley and Pat Sagorski Jr., Rev. Fr.
Peter A. Sagorski, George and Kay
Rae Sagorski, Mary Ann and Loren

Smith
Marian Bonine Smith, 94, of Coral,
passed away at Twin Oaks Retirement
Home in Gowen on Nov. 21, 2011.
She was born Nov. 14, 1917, in Tru-
fant, the daughter of Burt and Lillian
(Brown) Eurick. She enjoyed ceram-
ics, farming, painting, baking as well
as making wedding cakes.
Surviving are her grandchildren,
Dan (Neta) Block, Barb (Ron) She-
ler, Jim Block, Steve Smith, Deb
(Paul) Fitzner; two great nephews,
Jim (Carolyn) Brown and Jon Brown;
one great niece, Janet (Bill) Hoch and
many great-grandchildren and great-
nieces and nephews. She was preced-
ed in death by her parents; husband,
Clarence; a son, Donald; a daughter,
Dorothy; two brothers, Lloyd and
Earl; and two sisters, Grace Bodell
and Blanche Brown.
Funeral services will take place on
Saturday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Wes
Smith offciating with burial in the
Coral Cemetery. Friends may call at
the Heckman Funeral home on Satur-
day from 10 a.m. until time of services
at 11 a.m.

Scott Phillips plays ghoulish Jacob Marley
and his wife Dani is a special effects and
lighting technician.
This production promises to be an en-
gaging evening of live stage performances
which includes not only acting, but singing
and little dancing thrown in just for fun,

seeing this Christmas classic brought to

Charles Dickens The Christmas Car-
ol, adapted by Brian Way and produced
through special arrangements with Bak-
ers Plays and the Cedar Springs Theatre
Association, will be opening Friday, Dec. 9
at 7:30 on the Kent Theatre stage in down-
town Cedar Springs. The production runs
through Dec. 11 with performances at 2
p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, the 10th,
and a fnal matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday,
Dec. 11. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4

Zellies Opry House
Concert on Dec. 3
Zellies Opry House welcomes Bill By-
num & Co. on Saturday, December 3. In
addition to the featured artist, there will
also be a pre-show by the Zellies Opry
House Band. Two bands for the low price

Although a Detroit native, Bill Bynums
musical roots are in the South. His par-
ents migrated from Black Oak, Arkansas
to work in Detroits steel industry in the
1940s, bringinglike many otherstheir
love for country and bluegrass music.
Bill is a frst-prize winner in the Metro
Detroit Songwriting Showcase with his
song Lovin You. He has collaborated
with legendary Pete Goble and Goble ac-
knowledges, Bill is an excellent songwrit-
er. Hes got a delivery of a song that makes
you feel the songs telling you something
which is unique. Local performer, Terry
Winright says it best, Bill Bynums good,
hes really good.
With songs both traditional and origi-

a Veterans Day Service of any kind that

ies and 2 memorials, they are in parades

The Panhandle Area Chamber of Com-
merce would like to welcome Howard City
Lanes to our Chamber family.
Established in the 1940s, Howard City
Lanes, 118 E. Edgerton, houses 8 bowling
lanes for league play and family fun. The
Lakeview/Howard City Womens Bowling
Association was formed in 1948 and has been
supporting this local business ever since. With
over a dozen leagues scheduled throughout
the week, owners Greg and Beth Klunders
friendly welcome offers bowlers a relaxing at-
mosphere to enjoy their sport. Good food and
social climate has been successful at bringing
the same leagues of bowlers back time and
time again. We have a good bowling base of
people who come back every year, says Greg.
The people have been good to us.
With an expansion projected to open in
the spring, area bowlers can expect to see
more space for bowling and a limited menu

Montcalm County possesses some
startling statistics. According to the
Michigan State Police Crash Statistics
for 2010 there were 960 vehicle crashes
involving 10-16 year olds under the infu-
ence of alcohol in the State. In Montcalm
County there were 76 vehicle crashes
involving 10-16 year olds with 1 fatality
and 40 serious injuries. Further, accord-
ing to the Michigan Profle for Healthy
Youth surveys, during the past 30 days,
for Montcalm County high school youth,
15.6 percent of our 9th graders and 22.3
percent of our 11th graders have had fve
or more alcoholic drinks in a row within
a couple of hours. This is called binge
drinking episodes,. Local community
surveys indicate that 31 percent of our
parents don,t know if there is an alcohol
problem here. Obviously, since so many
of our teens are participating in binge
drinking this is defnitely a problem.
In an attempt to address youth access
to alcohol and tobacco, a series of Alco-
hol and Tobacco Compliance Checks with
businesses selling Alcohol and Tobacco
have recently been completed. Working
as a team with Law Enforcement offcers
and underage decoys (buyers), we were
able to complete a number of compli-
ance checks. All efforts in this project are
greatly appreciated. During the Tobacco
Compliance Checks 67 sites were visited
with 9 selling (13.43 percent) and during
the Alcohol Compliance Checks 32 sites
were visited with 5 selling (15.63 per-
cent).
Each of the underage buyers pos-
sessed a valid driver,s license or State ID
with RED lettering indicating the date
they would be legal to purchase the sub-
stances. In most of the cases the clerk did
not ask for the ID. In a few cases, how-
ever, they actually looked at the ID and
still sold to the youth.
We would like to acknowledge those
businesses that PASSED the compliance
checks and thank them for working to
prevent the sales of alcohol and tobacco
products to underage youth.

Meeting called to order and opened with the Pledge by Supervisor Phyllis Larson at 7 p.m.
Members present: Supervisor Phyllis Larson, Clerk Colleen Stebbins, Treasurer Cathy Kill-
inger, and Trustee Dan Kanouse, absent Trustee Jim Radford.
APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA: Motion by Colleen, second by Cathy to approve the
agenda, voice vote, motion passed.
CLERK REPORT: Stand approved as corrected.
TREASURER REPORT: Fire Department $20,915.70, Municipal Fund $33,901.06, Tax
Account $581.24, General Fund $100,262.40, for total of $155,660.40; stand approved as
read and total interest this month of $120.23.
REPORTS: Assessor Jeri Strong reported working from home, doing state reports, and
land divisions while recovering from her surgery.
Fire Department: No report
Zoning: Dave reported 5 permits for October.
Planning Commission: Dan reported Public Hearing November 28, 2011 at 7 p.m. for
community comments on proposed amendment to section 3.24 titled Open burning (re
in an uncovered burn barrel, campre, or re pit) may not be conducted within 20 feet of
any structure in all districts and amendment Section 3.22, sub-section B, paragraph 2,
except those parcels which were already part of an approved plat shall still be considered
separate.
Roads: October 19, 2011 we met with the County Road Commission to look over long term
road plans and put in for contracts for 2012. A petition has been submitted by E. Suwanee
Trail residents requesting paving mile of their road.
PUBLIC COMMENTS: Opened at 7:16 p.m. closed at 7:18 p.m.
NEW BUSINESS: Letter of resignation from Trustee Jim Radford, he will stay until a
replacement has been appointed. Board is looking for Trustee candidates.
Motion by Dan, second by Cathy to accept resignation of Jim Radford, roll call: Cathy yes,
Dan yes, Colleen yes, Phyllis yes, motion passed.
Dan stated he was honored to serve on the board with Jim and he said Jim performed his
duties well when available.
Colleen stated that Jim did a good job and he will be missed. Both Phyllis and Cathy agreed
with Colleen and Dan.
PAYMENT OF BILLS: Motion by Dan, second by Colleen to pay check number 9195
through check number 9232 plus IRS deposit for a total of $25,184.52, roll call: Dan yes,

Colleen reported Greenville Daily News printed last months minutes incorrectly, we did not
authorize $3500.00 in the budget for training for the Treasurer but approved $350.00.
They were contacted the next day that the information was incorrect and would they
PLEASE CORRECT but still no retraction has been printed. Colleen has copies of the letter
to the paper and copy of their paper and copy of minutes that were sent.

On October 28, Tri County High School welcomed published author and
Pierson native Bruce Jenvey. He quickly settled into the library, where a sign
was posted in his honor, and spoke to different students each period of the
day. Jenvey talked about everything from the production of his book to his
career prior to writing. After earning a degree in advertising from Michigan
State University, he worked in the eld and, after changing his career path
once more, eventually landed in writing. His story, however, comes with a bit
of a twist - Jenvey was so secretive about writing his rst book that his wife
thought he was having an affair!
Jenveys book, Angelas Coven, is currently available as an e-book. The
book sold more copies in its rst week than its publishing company ever has.
Call us crazy, but wed say hes pretty successful. TCHS students seemed to
agree, as they listened intently to his every word and asked intelligent, well
thought-out questions after each class periods speech. The event was part of NHS and the TC administrations efforts to
show students that graduating from TCHS should be seen more as a privilege than a disadvantage.
Tri County Middle Schools Student Council has kicked off their
annual Toys for Tots campaign. Last year the middle school collected
over 1,000 toys. Those toys were distributed directly to Montcalm
area children. Each year there seems to be a shortage of gifts for older
children at the middle school age range. While you are out doing
your Black Friday shopping grab an extra gift for a child and drop it
off at the middle school collection box located in the ofce or in your
childs classroom. Put a smile on a childs face this holiday season.

MacNaughton Elementary celebrated Veterans
Day by raising a new American ag donated by the
Howard City, VFW. In recognition of the VFWs
donation the staff and students wore red, white, and
blue, recited The Pledge of Allegiance and quietly
watched as principal Tim Goheen and Sergeant Matt
Teesdale, raised the new ag. MacNaughton students
showed their appreciation for veterans everywhere,
by making Thank You banners, which were
presented to the VFW on Thursday.

The Tri County National Honor Society
(NHS) needs your help. They are looking to
create an alumni wall of success with portraits
and information about TC alumni who, after
graduation became outstanding in their career/
eld/college, or have a successful career in
an unexpected eld, or made extraordinary
contributions for the community. They want to
inspire the current students that they too can
excel after graduation. In order to complete
this project, they need help nding the names,
stories, and even contact information for some
of TCs outstanding alumni.

accomplishments would be perfect to
demonstrate how TC grads can achieve great

If you have construction, printing or
metalworking skills or resources and would be
interested in helping the NHS with the building
of this project or have materials or resources to
donate for the alumni wall installation, please

community members involved in helping make
this project a source of pride at Tri County.

On Wednesday, November 2, the yearbook students and other students
interested took a trip to Ferris State University for a day of journalism.
Students took classes in Interviewing for Journalistic Writing, Storytelling
With Photography, Sports Writing and Interviewing, and Storytelling
With Cinematography in the morning. Afternoon classes were Writing
as a Career and School Newspapers. Lunch and a t-shirt were included.
Attendees enjoyed the workshop because it showed them sides of the
journalism eld not often shown in school.
Prior to lunch, students chose two of the four aforementioned morning
classes. Storytelling With Video taught them about the three stages of
quality cinematography (pre-production, shooting and post-production/
editing). The importance of knowing how to compose eye-catching photos,
particularly the rule of thirds and framing, was preached in the Storytelling
With Photography class. Because many area students dont often have the
opportunity to write or interview for topics like sports, the Sports Writing
and Interviewing class was popular. Interviewing for Journalistic Writing
was also a full class. In the afternoon, many TC students attended the
School Newspaper class. They enjoyed this class because, at the present
moment, our high school is lacking a newspaper of any sort; it presented
them with new ideas and outlets to create one. To wrap things up, the
vast majority of TCHS students attended Writing as a Career. All in all,
TCHS students enjoyed their FSU journalism trip because it taught them
to think outside the box with new forms of media (digital) while still
highlighting the importance of the old school forms.

Hunter Harrassment Overview
Agency: Natural Resources
Hunters in Michigan have the right to enjoy their sport free from unreasonable and
deliberate interference from those opposed to hunting as a legitimate use of public
land and other natural resources.
Michigan law prohibits individuals from obstructing or interfering with the law-
ful taking of animals. The Department of Natural Resources supports hunting as a
legitimate form of recreation and as a useful tool in the management of the wildlife
resource. Michigan conservation ofcers are committed to protecting hunters from
the intentional disruption of the hunting experience.
Individuals, whose hunting is being obstructed, should promptly report the viola-
tion to the DNR toll free complaint line at 1-800-292-7800, a local conservation
ofcer, or the nearest DNR ofce facility.
Hunter harassment is a misdemeanor offense. Law enforcement ofcers may issue
a citation for violations which take place in their presence, or may arrest with a war-
rant obtained on information provided by the affected hunter. Acting in cooperation
with each other, the hunter and the conservation ofcer can be an effective team in
ensuring the full protection of Michigans hunters.
In order for an enforcement effort to be effective, the hunter should be prepared,
pay attention to details, contact a law enforcement ofcer and most important, be
willing to take the issue to court and provide credible testimony in any court pro-
ceedings.
Hunters should note the following points; who, what, where, when, and how when
reporting any physical or other deliberate hunter anti-hunter confrontation. The
hunter should not under any circumstances become involved in a physical confron-
tation with any individual. Hunters being harassedshould inform the harasser of
their feelings and request the
harassment to stop.
The burden of proof in any
criminal prosecution is on
the accuser. To successfully
prosecute any person for ha-
rassment of another, it must
be proven beyond a reason-
able doubt that the person
intentionally or knowingly
committed the violation.

Buck. If its not below 32 degrees you need to cape your deer as soon
as possible, no more than one day. Three days if it is. Cut around the
deer behind the shoulders, cut the front legs off just above the knees
and skin the deer up to the head and cut off. Put in plastic bag and
freeze it or take to your taxidermist. I will be happy to do it for you if

In Michigan in 2010 there were 55,867
reported car-deer crashes with 11 mo-
torists killed and 1,277 injured. About
80 percent of all car-deer crashes take
place on two-lane roads between dusk
and dawn. (Of the reported car-deer
accidents Kent County is number one
and Montcalm County is number six in
the states highest accident rate).
What can you do?
Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
Remember, safety belts are your best
defense in any collision.
Be alert for deer in spring and fall,
especially at dawn and dusk.
Heed deer crossing and speed limit
signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
Dont swerve!

Smartphones are computers. Computers on the
move. They are easily accessible to you and to
every recipient person, computer, phone, or social
networking site that sees a picture sent from your
smartphone. Typically data about your phone and
where it is geolocation-wise travels with pictures
you send. Once the photos make it to a social net-
working site, its easy to nd your home location
from there. Even for non-nerdy folk. Amazing.
Orwellian.
Their convenience exacts a price. The price of
this amazing technology can be high. Because
they are computers, some form of computer virus,
worm, or malware could damage or disable your
smartphone. A hacker could make your phone
retrieve programs or information from another in-
fected system to be used by the hacker later. They
can obtain personal data about you, for their own
gain think identity theft. Some Apps (Applica-
tions) have been purposefully developed to allow
the programmer access to your Smartphones user
information, such as a credit card numbers used to
buy over the phone, or social security numbers or
your private account passwords.
How will you know your phones been taken?
Its highly unlikely youll know when your smart-
phones been hacked. But on rare occasion clues
appear: What you see on the screen may seem
suspicious. Your phones capabilities may be com-
promised, it might work slowly, might not feel
just right, or could be refusing your commands.
If your phone has a mind of its own, perhaps an
outsider is in control. Does your phone turn on or
off by itself? Are there too many calls in your log
from numbers you dont recognize?
Smart users protect their phones. As soon as you
get your rst smartphone,
Install an anti-virus program. Always keep
the AV software current. Use it frequently. Search
for anti-virus programs on your computer, research
their efciency and performance. Google offers
AVG Antivirus, and SMS AVG Mobilation for
Droids. Opera, WhatsApp Messenger, MyMobile
- many others, some free, most low-cost.
iPhones have the luxury of built-in protec-
tion from worms and viral Apps because
all iPhone Apps are available only through
Apples iTunes. And TrendMicro offers
Smart Surng, an App that prevents infec-
tion for iPhone users who frequently surf the
web.
Before downloading an App, check it out. Is
it reputable? How often has the App been
reviewed? Whos the manufacturer?
As boring as it seems, read the Terms and
Conditions for the App to see how much
information you will share with the manu-
facturer. Choose Apps that want only the in-
formation needed to perform their function.
Dont give out your social security number.
Use a proven, reliable, backup program to
store your telephones contents in the clouds.
Unless youre a fearless risktaker or have the
nerd gene, dont try a backup by jailbreaking
or rooting your phone, which invites worms
(for sure if you didnt understand this sen-
tence).
Always turn off your GPS and geolocation
when you arent using it. Most Droids have
an icon to do this. Or use your privacy set-
tings.
Simplest of all, but maybe hardest to manage,
dont let your phone get away in someone
elses pocket.

Hypnosis
Last year Barb and I took some training in Hypnosis. The purpose was to use this to help discover some of our own issues
and to bring back tools that we can use to help others who come to The Healing Center.
Having mentioned this to some friends, someone commented that Hypnosis scared her. This is actually a very common
reaction. Why? Most of it is because of movies, television, or stage hypnosis. We have all seen the scary movie or TV show
in which someone is hypnotized into a zombie who does horrible things to others. Or we have seen stage hypnosis where
someone is made to cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog while jumping around on stage. We must remember that this is all
entertainment.
Others are afraid of this because of their religious upbringing. I was raised to think that Hypnosis was a tool of the devil.
Mom told us that during a hypnotic trance demons and entities could possess us. Of course, what person wants to be
possessed? I always wondered how this could be the devils work if it was used to help people stop drinking, stop smoking,
loose weight, overcome stress / anxiety / anger and heal themselves?
Think about some normal things that happen every day in our lives. We have all experienced that fuzzy state when we
were between being awake and asleep. Frequently we daydream. Have you ever been driving a long distance and suddenly
woke up, not really knowing how you got to this exit? During a shower, or while working on a factory assembly line, we do
these things so automatically that our mind goes somewhere else. How many of us watch television or movies and become
entranced (that is what the advertisers count on). What about when we become engrossed in a book? Did you ever have the
feeling of drifting off during church even though you were not tired?
These are all normal everyday events that are actually hypnotic states. When tests were done with EEG (brain wave tests),
it was found that our brain produces four different kinds of brain waves. Beta brain waves occur when
we are wide awake. Alpha waves happen when we day dream, do repetitive work, during prayer,
when we drift off to sleep, every time we have a dream (5-6 times per night), within 5 minutes of sitting
down to watch a movie or TV show, and during hypnosis. Theta waves occur during deeper sleep,
during extreme pain, and during anesthesia (for dentistry or surgery). This state is also associated with
some nerve pills and sleeping pills. Finally Delta waves occur during the deepest sleep.
We all have automatic habits, and repetitive emotional reactions to things. If these behaviors help us
in our daily lives, we will want to keep them. If they are harmful and limiting, we may want to change
them. The subconscious part of our mind is what controls all of our behavior and reactions, good or
bad. Hypnosis is a nice way to get into that programming part of our brain to change some of those
less than benecial activities.
We should be excited. We now have tools to learn to manage this part of our mind.
