New Record Carp Caught in Lake Champlain
A Shoreham angler took a new
state record carp on May 20 from
the Vermont waters of Lake
Champlain.
Darren Ouelette was bow-fish-
ing for carp with Taylor Patterson
in a backwater area of southern
Lake Champlain when Darren
spotted a very large carp cruising
just below the surface in some
flooded trees. Drawing quickly and
taking aim, Darren arrowed the
44-pound 6-ounce giant, and then
fought for over 20 minutes to land
it on his fishing-modified com-
pound bow.
I knew it was a pretty big fish
when I first saw it, but I didnt
think it was as big as it turned out
to be, said Ouellette.
When Darren finally got it in
close, I tried to net it but I could
only fit its head in the net, added
Taylor. I ended up just grabbing it in the mouth by hand and
swinging it in. I was shocked at how heavy it was when I went to
lift it.
Darrens fish eclipses the previous state record carp by nearly
two pounds. That fish was taken by bow-angler Jeremy Ballantine
in May 2013 on the Connecticut River and weighed 42-pounds
8-ounces.
Although common carp have been naturalized in many waters
throughout the country since the early 1800s, fishing for them
gained little attention from North American anglers until recently.
Carp-specific fishing magazines, clubs, television shows and
internet forums are starting to pop
up throughout the U.S. and Canada
as anglers slowly realize the sport-
ing opportunities and trophy-class
potential common carp provide.
Common carp are actually
smart, wary fish that spook easily,
says Shawn Good, Vermont Fish
& Wildlifes fisheries biologist
who administers the Vermont
Record Fish Program. While its
still uncommon in Vermont, there
is a small group of dedicated
anglers I know here who target
carp with fly fishing gear. These
anglers tell me that carp are often
referred to as freshwater bone-
fish because of the challenge and
difficulty in taking one on a fly.
And according to Good, Lake
Champlain is ripe to provide those
challenges to keen anglers who
learn about productive carp fishing
techniques.
Full grown adult carp in Lake Champlain average well over 20
pounds in size, with a real opportunity to catch them in the
30-pound range and higher, says Good. In other places around
the country where carp fishing has taken off, the most common
method of fishing for them involves chumming an area close to
shore with dough-balls or boilies to bring the fish in close, and
still-fishing in the middle of your chummed area.
Carp are incredibly strong and powerful fish, and when hooked,
can make long, powerful runs. Who wouldnt want to hook a
20-pound fish that fights like that! You may never fish for trout or
bass again, teased Good.
Good also points out that the common carp, which has long
been established in North American waters, including Lake

Hunter Education Instructor Training Course Taking Place July 18-19
Vermonts Moose Hunt Auction is Open
The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is offering a New
Instructor Training Course for people interested in volunteering to
teach Hunter Education, Trapping Education or Bowhunter
Education courses in Vermont.
The course will take place starting at 7pm on Friday, July 18,
and will go through the afternoon of Saturday, July 19. It will be
held at Vermont Fish & Wildlifes Green Mountain Conservation
Camp at Buck Lake in Woodbury.
Participants may stay at the camp overnight in the cabins, but
must bring personal camping supplies, including a sleeping bag
and other bedding materials. Participants are also permitted to
pitch a tent on site. Breakfast and lunch will be provided on
Saturday.
The course will cover policies and procedures, field experience,
and teaching methods to give instructors the tools to teach future
Vermont hunters how to have a safe and enjoyable experience.
After attending the instructor training course, all applicants are
required to shadow a chief instructor before they can teach on their
own.
Vermont has an extremely strong hunter safety record as a
result of our knowledgeable and capable hunter education instruc-
tors, said Chris Saunders, hunter education coordinator for
Vermont. The skills and ethics that our instructors impart to their
students will serve them for a lifetime.
Participants who successfully pass the final written exam will
receive assignments for shadowing with a chief instructor. Upon
completion, they will then receive their full state of Vermont
Hunter Education Instructor certification.
The event starts at 7pm on

Champlain since 1883, is a different species
than the invasive Asian carp that has recently
been in the news. He says non-native common
carp do not pose the same threats to aquatic eco-
systems and human safety that Asian carp do.
Asian carp are not present in Vermont waters.
The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has
maintained the record fish program since 1969 to
help monitor productivity of fisheries throughout
the state and also to give anglers recognition for
their exceptional catches.
Ouellettes carp now stands as the single
heaviest fish ever entered into the program, of
any species, in the 45 years of the programs
existence.
You can learn more about Vermonts big fish
records on Vermont Fish & Wildlifes website
(www.vtfishandwildlife.com). A database of
Vermont record fish entries is searchable by spe-
cies, body of water and year of catch. While you
are there, be sure to check out the Master Angler
Program entries and photos.

NASCAR Star Clint Bowyer Returning to Governors Cup
Thunder Road International Speedbowl
announced last week that NASCAR Sprint
Cup star Clint Bowyer, from Emporia, Kansas,
has asked to return for another shot at the
famous high banks of Thunder Road. Bowyer
raced in the 2013 Vermont Governors Cup
150 for the first time. His goal was to have
better results than the previous Cup visitor,
Tony Stewart, who finished 16th. I want to
tackle that 1/4 mile again. I didnt have
enough time to figure out the fourth turn, but
I learned a lot last year about it, and I really
want to get back there - the teams and fans
were fun to be around, said Bowyer.
The original date for the VT Governors
Cup of Thursday, June 26 has been switched
to Thursday, July 10th to coincide with the
NASCAR Sprint Cup event being held that
weekend at the New Hampshire Motor
Speedway in Loudon. Thursday, June 26 will
now be a regular Thursday night race pro-
gram.
We are happy to make this kind of sched-
ule change to have Clint Bowyer in atten-
dance again. He said a year ago that he
wanted to come back after a disappointing
finish and my guess is that he will be ready to
take on the best that Thunder Road has to
offer, said the founder of Thunder Road, Ken Squier.
Bowyer won his heat race and started the
2013 race in 16th. He ran 132 laps before
retiring. I really wanted to win and when I
knew that was not going to happen I wanted
to bring the car back to the team in one piece.
Sometimes you got to know when to hold
them and know when to fold them. I am hop-
ing for a Royal Flush this year, concluded
Bowyer.
Bowyer will be driving for the same team
as one year ago. Rick Green from Enosburg
Falls, Vt. is the owner of RGR which includes
the ACT cars driven by Travis Stearns, Joey
Becker and now Scott Dragon. The cars are
constructed at Crazy Horse Racing in South
Paris, Maine and crew chief Mickey Green
will bring his crew to Thunder Road again for
the event.
It is always fun to have a NASCAR driver
at Thunder Road, said two-time Thunder
Road King of the Road and two-time
Governors Cup winner Nick Sweet. In all
fairness, the Road is really unlike almost
any short track in the country, and this is a
points race for all of us who are running for a
championship. Clint Bowyer is really like a
lot of us, he just likes the challenge and loves
to race. Trust me, he will find another chal-
lenge this year at Thunder Road, concluded Sweet.
Watch Out for Vulnerable Users on the Road
Who are vulnerable users? They may be on skateboards, scoot-
ers, bicycles or on foot, in wheelchairs or working on the road.
They lack the protection we have inside our cars or trucks, but
deserve to be as safe as we are. Heres how we can all help:
Drivers
Drive slowly, avoid distractions, and be alert for anyone standing,
walking or biking as you leave your driveway and on the streets,
especially at intersections and crosswalks, on road shoulders,
around school zones and bus stops, coming out of driveways or
from behind obstructions like parked cars.
When passing a vulnerable user, slow down and leave at least 4
feet between you.
When approaching an intersection or crosswalk, let vulnerable
users go first, and always yield to them wherever they are. Use
extra caution around children, the elderly and blind pedestrians.
Never block the crosswalk.
Check side mirrors for bikes before opening your car door.
Dont honk at bicyclists, and remember that they have a right to
use the travel lane.
Dont stop to pick up hitchhikers on the highway or ramps.
Never turn right on red when a red arrow or No Turn on Red sign
is lit.
Bicyclists
Obey the rules of the road, including stop signs, traffic lights and
proper signals before turning.
Ride with traffic, in single file when vehicles are present and
never more than two abreast.
Be predictable, avoid weaving or sudden lane changes and yield
to pedestrians.
Wear a helmet, and use reflectors on your bike.
Pedestrians
Look both ways, then left again before crossing, and use cross-
walks.
Always obey Walk and Dont Walk signals. When there is no
signal, cross with the green light in your direction, but watch for
turning vehicles.
When there are sidewalks, use them. When you must walk on the
road, stay as far as possible to the left, facing traffic.

of those writings, so you have another chance. The earliest

John Donahue Scores Thunder Road Win on Casella Night
Granitevilles John Donahue captured his
14th career Thunder Road Late Model win dur-
ing Casella Waste Management Night on
Thursday, June 19. Donahue started fifth in the
22-car field and battled late in the 50-lap event
with rookie driver Eric Badore. Thunder Road
has not seen a repeat winner yet this season, as
across its three divisions there have been 12 dif-
ferent feature winners.
Badore and Donahue swapped the lead sev-
eral times over the late stages of the event, but
the veteran got the edge over the last several
laps. Donahue and Badore were followed across
the line by another rookie in Josh Demers, to
complete the podium. Phil Scott and a third
rookie in Jason Allen completed the top five.
Cody Blake, Eric Chase, Nick Sweet, Dave
Pembroke and Trampas Demers rounded out the
top ten.
Darrell Morin of Burlington claimed his third
career Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen feature vic-
tory after leading all 35 laps. He held off
Christopher Pelkey through the late stages of the
event to claim the win. Pelkey was followed
across the line by Mike Martin, Brendan Moodie
and Dylan Payea in the top five. Point leader
Jason Woodard took sixth followed by Chris
Roberts, Mike Billado, Jeff Bousquet and George
May completing the top ten.
Will Hennequin of Morrisville took the Allen
Lumber Street Stock win. It was the eighth of his
career. He battled from his 6th starting position
and held off Kyle Streeter following the final
caution with just under five laps to go. Jamon
Perry took third, followed by Donny Yates and
Jamie Davis in the top five. Kevin Dodge, Gary
Mullen, Dave Whitcomb, Bunker Hodgdon and
Alan Maynard took home top tens.
Barres Chris LaForest took the two-segment
overall Rough Rider win. His pair of second
place efforts were enough to edge Alan
Derrington and Paul Dudley in the Rough Riders
first event of the season.

Winthrop, MEs Jeff White netted his second career American
Canadian Tour at White Mountain Motorsports Park in North
Woodstock, NH on Saturday night leading nearly every lap of the
150 lap event. White held off Wayne Helliwell, Jr. through a
fierce battle for the majority of the event. White took the lead from
his outside pole starting position at the drop of the green flag and
battled early with American Canadian Tour -Riverside Speedway
winner Kyle Welch and MWMP regular Travis Fadden. Welch and
Fadden later traded paint opening the door for Helliwell. Helliwell
made several runs on the outside and swapped the lead with White
four times through the second half of the event and the final three
cautions. Helliwell couldnt quite make it work in the top groove
and after one last effort on the final restart with just eight laps to
go, settled for second. White motored to his first ACT win since
2011 with Helliwell second, Fadden claimed third, while current
ACT point leader Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. came home fourth and
Emily Packard scored fifth. Welch, current Srie ACT Quebec
point leader Alex Labbe, Jimmy Hebert, Stephane Decoste and
Travis Stearns completed the top ten. In just six ACT events of the
season, White becomes the sixth different race winner. He also
pockets the Bond ACT Invitational $1,000 bonus and a qualified
spot in the Bond ACT Invitational field at New Hampshire Motor
Speedway on Saturday, September 20. The 150 lap event was
completed in 52 minutes and 51 seconds with just five cautions.
All 27 cars in attendance started the feature event, with 18 of them
finishing on the lead lap. A total of 25 cars were on the track for
the checkered flag.
Concrete Carl turned the corner to Road Course Carl Sunday
afternoon winning his first career lefty-righty race in the Toyota/
Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. Not known as one of
NASCARs elite road-racers Edwards scored a surprising win and
became the tenth consecutive different winner in the last ten
events on the 1.99-mile California facility. Edwards virtually
locked up a position in the Chase with his second win of the sea-
son. Thats the best Ive got and it almost wasnt good enough,
Edwards said. That last lap was ugly. I grew up watching Jeff
Gordon do well here, so to have him in my mirror, that is very
special. Jeff Gordon, the Sprint Cup points leader finished a
strong second followed by teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr in third. In
all, bow-tie drivers took spots two through seven as pole-sitter
Jamie McMurray, using a Hendrick engine, finished fourth and
Paul Menard was fifth. Kasey Kahne bounced back from an early
flat tire to finish sixth and Jimmie Johnson was seventh. It was
Edwards 23rd win of his career, the 135th Sprint Cup Series vic-
tory for car owner Jack Roush.
Brendan Gaughan survived two early off-track excursions and a
race in which much of the second half was contested in rain as cars
rode on wet weather tires to win Saturdays Gardner Denver 200
NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Road America. It was the
third time in NASCAR history all on road courses and all on the
NNS circuit that a race has been run in rain. The other two were
in Montreal in 2008 and 2010, also on a road course (Circuit
Gilles Villeneuve). Racing in the rain ignited something in
Gaughan that helped overcome and forget his early misfortune and
go on to earn his first career win on the Nationwide circuit in 98
starts (he also has eight career wins in the NASCAR Camping
World Truck Series). I love racing in the rain, its fun, said
Gaughan, who was in the 2010 Montreal race, and has driven in
rain several other times in other series. And when youre good at
it, it makes it I havent smelled blood in a long time, thats some-
Cup regular Clint Bowyer will take a second stab at the Roads high

thing Ive been lacking lately, that killer attitude. When it started
to rain, even without the wiper blade (was broken), I started to
smell blood and said, Im coming. Its fun to watch guys who
havent done it in the rain. They dont understand the rain line, and
fortunately for me, I did. Gaughan passed Chase Elliott for the
lead on Lap 51 and held on for the two remaining laps to win.
Gaughan beat runner-up Alex Tagliani by .820 seconds in a green-
white-checkered finish that took the race to 53 laps, three more
than the scheduled 50. It appeared it would be Taglianis race to
win, as he was leading in the closing laps when he ran out of fuel
on lap 49. Kevin OConnell finished third, followed by Chase
Elliott and J.J. Yeley. Regan Smith, who finished 13th, retained his
lead in the NNS points standings. Elliott Sadler (finished ninth) is
second in the points, 10 points behind Smith, while Chase Elliott
remains in third place (11 points back).

Granitevilles John Donahue captured his 14th career Thunder
Road Late Model win during Casella Waste Management Night on
Thursday night. Donahue started fifth in the 22 car field and bat-
tled late in the 50-lap event with rookie driver Eric Badore.
Thunder Road has not seen a repeat winner yet this season as
across its three divisions there have been 12 different feature win-
ners. Darrell Morin of Burlington claimed his third career Bond
Auto Tiger Sportsmen feature victory after leading all 35 laps
while Will Hennequin of Morrisville took the Allen Lumber Street
Stock win.
Jessey Mueller made a huge statement at Devils Bowl Speedway
on Friday night. The Olmstedville, NY teenager rebounded from a
disqualification just five days earlier, driving from last place on
the starting grid to win the 30-lap Bond Auto Parts Modified event
presented by 105.3 Cat Country. Joining Mueller as NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series feature winners on the night were
Jamie Fisher Late Models, sixteen year-old Stephen Donahue,
second consecutive Renegade feature win and John McCarron in
the Mini Stock division. .

Heres a Throwback Thursday frontrunner: Thursday, June 19,
marked the 65th anniversary of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
first race, held in 1949. In what was then called the Strictly Stock
division, the race was held at Charlotte Speedway, a .75-mile dirt
track, and won by Jim Roper. It featured a 33-car field that includ-
ed NASCAR Hall of Famers Tim Flock, Buck Baker, Lee Petty
and Herb Thomas.

Are You Driving
Impaired by Your
Medicine?
While most drivers think of alcohol when they hear the word
impaired, drinking is not the only road to impairment. Drugs,
including prescription and over the counter medicine or herbal
supplements, can seriously affect your ability to drive safely.
Medication can cause impairment that is just as deadly as alcohol,
due to hazardous side effects such as blurred vision, confusion,
drowsiness, dizziness, fainting, nausea, inability to focus or
muscle weakness. Any of these conditions can make you more
susceptible to injury or death on the highway, or arrest for driving
while impaired. And a DUI conviction can lead to a suspended
license, large fines, increased insurance payments and even a jail
sentence.
Medicines are intended to keep us healthy, not get us into
trouble. And we can keep it that way if we remain fully focused
on driving and always follow these simple tips:
Make sure your doctor knows about all the medication you are
taking, including over the counter drugs, herbal supplements, and
alcohol use, to identify interaction risks.
Ask your doctor and pharmacist about side effects that may
affect driving whenever you start taking a new medication, and
notify your doctor if you experience any.
Read drug information carefully for warnings about side
effects and driving.
Observe your reaction to new medications and make sure you
are free of unsafe side effects before driving.
Take all medicine exactly as prescribed, and dont change or
stop without your doctors OK.
Never take medication prescribed for someone else.
Never take medication past its expiration date.
Carry a list of your medications with you.
Ask your doctor if there are safer alternatives, like lifestyle
changes, another similar drug or an adjustment to dosage or tim-
ing.
Ask friends and family to help you get around, or check out
public transportation options.
And always buckle your seat belt!
Drive Time -- Safety Tips for Vermont Drivers. Information, tips
and reminders from those who work to keep Vermont drivers safe
From the Vermont State Police, VT Dept. of Motor Vehicles, VT
Agency of Transportation, VT Sheriff s Assn. and the AARP
Driver Safety Program.

Avoiding Road Rage
1) Be a polite driver. Allow other drivers to pass you or to move
over into your lane if needed. Experts say that helping other driv-
ers will put you and them in a more peaceful state of mind, and
following the rules of the road will keep you safe.
2) Avoid confrontation. If an angry driver yells at your or pres-
ents a rude gesture, do not make eye contact or yell back. Above
all, do not follow to create confrontation. Keep your eyes on the
road and ignore the angry driver.
3) If another driver cuts you off, or honks at you, its probably
because they are experiencing their own road rage, not because
they are personally angry at you. Taking offense at his or her
action will only cause your own road rage to escalate.
4) If you do become a victim of another drivers road rage and
you feel threatened, take steps to keep yourself safe. If the situa-
tion escalates and there is vehicle damage, note the license plate
number, make, and model of the vehicle. If youre being fol-
lowed, drive to the nearest police station and request assistance.
