Vermont now has two bear hunting seasons. The early bear hunting season, which requires a special bear tag, starts September 1 and continues through November 15. The late bear season begins November 16 and continues through November 24. The bear tag that comes with a hunting license is for use during this late season. This season has been extended four additional days during the November deer season. The early season bear tag costs $5 for residents and $15 for nonresidents. A hunter may only take one bear during the year. The new season was instated to help better manage Vermonts bear population, which is now estimated at slightly more than 6,000 black bears, according to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. The number of bears has increased during the last two decades and is now higher than the objective of 4,500 to 6,000 bears listed in Vermonts Big Game Management Plan for 20102020. Twenty-five years ago Vermonts bear population was less than 3,000, and bears existed primarily in the mountains and in the northeastern quarter of the state, said wildlife biologist Forrest Hammond. Through changes in hunting regulations identified in the previous Big Game Management Plan, we successfully encouraged bears to increase in number and expand into towns where their numbers were low.
But, added Hammond, we are now seeing more incidents of bears doing damage, primarily where they are attracted to foods such as bird seed, pet food left outside, garbage containers, bee hives, chicken coops, barbecues, livestock, and field corn. Carefully regulated hunting plays a very important role in wildlife management by helping to control the growth of the black bear population and allowing for the sustainable utilization of black bears for food and other purposes, said Hammond. Hammond reminds hunters they need to collect a small premolar tooth from each harvested bear, because, he stressed, The collection of a premolar tooth from every bear reported is critical to the bear project. The tooth is actually quite small and easy to loosen with a knife, he added. Directions for removing the tooth are on the back of the envelope provided by the check station. We are able to age the bear and gain essential knowledge about the status of Vermonts bear population. Hunters took 618 bears last year in Vermont. A report listing the number of bears taken in each town during the 2012 bear season is available on Vermont Fish & Wildlifes website at (vtfishandwildlife.com). Brett Wheeler outlasted Joey Becker in a side-by-side duel of front row occupants that went on for the full 50 laps of the MakeA-Wish Late Model main event Thursday, August 15th at Thunder Road. Wheeler had to command the outside lane to land his 2nd win of the season in the Spherion Chevy No. 1. Becker led the first 16 laps as well as laps 26-30 and 32-36. Neither Wheeler nor Becker could have survived a misstep as 16-year-old Emily Packard arrived at their spoilers on lap 36. Packard got a wheel ahead of Becker as the trio encountered a lapped car, but Becker hung tough for runner-up honors. Scott Payea was a close 4th, three car-lengths ahead of point leader Derrick ODonnell. Nick Sweet, Cody Blake and Eric Chase were next in line. It was a lot of fun racing with Joey like that, Wheeler said. Mike Billado of Essex became the 11th different winner in 12 Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman events when he wired the field in the 35-lap feature, which had only one caution. Billado led Adam Pierson, Mike Ziter, Jason Woodard and Cam Ouellette to the wire. The five cars raced nose-to-tail well ahead of a doublewide battle for 6th, which went to point leader Eric Badore. Spots 7-10 went to Jeff Bousquet, Shawn Fleury, Scott Coburn and Brendan Moodie. The night of stock car racing got off to a heartwarming start
when Jennifer Getty of Cambridge brought a big summers winding down crowd to its feet with her first career win in the makeup WDEV Night Allen Lumber Street Stock feature. One-handed since birth and a fan favorite for her upbeat attitude, Getty led every lap in her pink Shearer Chevrolet No. 25 despite a mirror full of Jamie Davis over the final seven laps. Ive had a speech ready for a long time, but I just want to thank my team, my friends and my fans, Getty said. Troy Kingsbury followed Davis home in 3rd. Willy Hennequin and Gary Mullen, who tailed Getty closely for a dozen laps, completed the top five. Getty was back for more in Make-A-Wish Night qualifying action with a win in her heat race. In the Street Stock nightcap, Al Maynard of Fairfax held off Jamie Davis to record his first ever win. Sixteen-year-old rookie Tyler Austin of East Calais had his best showing of the season in 3rd. Nate Crete, a mechanic from Essex won the Run What Ya Brung spectator drags competition in an Audi S-4. NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison was in attendance for an autograph session on behalf of the State of Vermonts Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign and gave the Gentleman and Ladies, start your engines command.

By the time Juan Pablo Montoya got the official word that he was out of Earnhardt Ganassi Racings No. 42 Chevrolet at the end of the 2013 season, it was almost an anticlimax. For months, Montoya had known the parting was coming, and he had already begun to explore other options. "I think I knew from quite a while ago, to be honest with you," Montoya told reporters Friday at Michigan International Speedway during a question-and-answer session behind the No. 42 transporter. "They (EGR) had an option earlier in the year and they didnt take it, so I kind of knew it was going to be something different next year, and thats it. "They confirmed it this week, and that was it." As to what the future holds, Montoya has only one requirement. "The only thing I said already is I want to be in a winning car," he said. "Whatever else I do--dont know what Im going to do--but I want to make sure Im in a winning car."
Austin Dillon but left Mid-Ohio with a 13-point lead with 11 races remaining. Dillon who finished 21st dropped into a tie for the third with Regan Smith. Smith spun early in the day and fell out of contention. Elliott Sadler jumped ahead of both of them to take over second in the standings. He's two points ahead of the duo. Brian Vickers remained fifth in the standings.
With six laps left in Saturday's Michigan National Guard 200 at Michigan International Speedway, Kyle Busch appeared destined to win his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at the two-mile track. But James Buescher, the reigning series champion, rewrote the script with a daring three-wide pass on Lap 97 of 100 and held on to win his first NCWTS event of the season and the fifth of his career. Busch finished second at Michigan for the fourth time in the Truck Series. Ty Dillon ran third, followed by Joey Logano and Miguel Paludo. Buescher had planned to pass Brendan Gaughan, who was running second at the time, into Turn 3 on Lap 97. But when he saw a chance to pass both Gaughan and Busch in the same corner, he took it. "It started on the exit of Turn 2," Buescher said. "I was catching Brendan and Kyle and was trying to push Brendan up to Kyle, and coming off two I had a gap between the 62 (Gaughan) and I. Brendan was also catching the 51 (Busch), so when I got the run on the 62, my plan going into Turn 3 was to pass the 62. "It just worked out to where I passed the 62 and the 51. Kyle went down to throw a block, and he got loose entering as low as he did, and the position that my truck was probably didn't help his 'loose.' I stayed committed, kept my foot in the throttle and came out the other end in front of them both." Buescher climbed one position to third in the NCWTS standings, 52 points behind leader Matt Crafton, who finished ninth Saturday. Pole winner Jeb Burton, who ran 10th after getting mired in traffic, is second in points, 51 back of Crafton.
It had been 43 years since Richard Petty piloted the No. 43 Plymouth to victory on the dirt surface of the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. It was the last time that one of NASCAR's national series compered on a dirt track. That was until July 24, 2013, when Austin Dillon returned to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series to win the 1-800 CarCash Mudsummer Classic Presented by CNBC's Prime the Profit at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Less than a month after that historic Wednesday night, Dillon ventured to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C., with his crew in tow to unveil the race-winning truck in the Great Hall. What is it about Penske Racing's No. 22 Ford Mustang? AJ Allmendinger drove it to victory in Saturday's NASCAR Nationwide Series Nationwide Children's Hospital 200 at the MidOhio Sports Car Course, making it three straight races the car has ended the day parked in Victory Lane. Brad Keselowski has won four times, including the last two races, and Joey Logano has won twice in it, including a July 21 victory at Chicago. Add Allmendinger's two victories in the car and that's eight this season. Allmendinger also made it a clean sweep of the series' road races for Penske. Keselowski drove the No. 22 car to victory last weekend at Watkins Glen.

The fourth annual Riverside Can-Am 200 at Circuit Riverside Speedway will roll off Saturday night. The event is a combination race for the U.S.-based ACT Tour and the Canadian-based Srie ACT. The Srie ACT has had two point counting events at Riverside Speedway already this season. Jean-Franois Dry claimed the win in the season opening Riverside 100 for the Srie ACT back in June, while Dany Trepanier won the Twin 75 at Riverside in July. Brian Hoar has won all three Can-Am 200 events to date. This is the second of two (2) point counting event held north of the border for the ACT Late Model Tour this season.

Jean-Franois Dry of Quebec held off hometown favorite Patrick Laperle to take his second win of the season in the St-Eustache 200 at Autodrome St-Eustache on Saturday, August 10. Dry now has nine career Srie ACT wins. The race began with a major wreck on lap 1 of the 200 lap event. The wreck resulted in a red flag period of five minutes to allow drivers a chance to fix their automobiles. When the race got back underway, Dany Trepanier took the point until lap 25, when Jonathan Bouvrette took over the lead. Dry finally got to the front on lap 42 to take the lead. He battled with Laperle for the remain-
der of the event. Dry took over the lead for good and didnt look back after lap 129. Laperle and Trepanier completed the podium. They were chased to the line by current Srie ACT point leader Patrick Cliche and Bouvrette. The top ten was rounded out with Etienne Cliche, Patrick Hamel, Donald Theetge, Stephane Descoste and rookie Christopher Bedard. The Srie ACT has next weekend off before heading back to Circuit Riverside Speedway in St-Croix, Quebec on Saturday, August 24. The Riverside Can-Am 200 will be a combination event with the stars of the US-based ACT Tour along with the Quebec-based Srie ACT stars.

Blue green algae, (known as cyanobacteria) are microscopic plants that grow in any type water and are too small to be seen. However, they can experience rapid growth (bloom) in nutrient rich water in late summer or early fall and can be deadly to animals. When the algae blooms, the water appears cloudy or like foam, scum, or even matts on the surface of ponds or lakes. Some liken them to the appearance of pea soup. Since the blooms float, they are easily driven towards shore, making them more accessible to livestock and pets. The poisons produced by some cyanobacteria are among the most potent natural poisons known. There are no known antidotes. Although most blue green algae blooms dont produce toxins, it is impossible to determine without testing. Dogs affected by these poisons may exhibit neurological signs such as weakness, stumbling, difficulty breathing, or seizures 15-20 minutes after exposure. Other signs include severe vomiting and diarrhea, jaundice, pale mucous membranes, blood in the stool, and abdominal pain hours or days later. Livestock drinking from water with algal blooms are often found dead near the
source. Sadly, the prognosis for a pet surviving a toxic exposure to blue green algae is very poor once clinical signs have occurred, so prevention is essential. Dont let pets drink from or swim in ponds or lakes that are scummy. If you suspect you or your pets may be affected, rinse with fresh water as soon as possible (dont let your pet lick themself) and seek immediate veterinary assistance.
Friends of Vermont Dogs (FVD) is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to provide free fences, insulated dog houses, spay/neuter support, and education to help release dogs from continual tethering. Dogs who are continually tethered usually suffer from isolation, depression, aggression tendency, harsh weather conditions, inability to flee from attack, and unsanitary living conditions. States and various jurisdictions continue to address this issue through anti-tethering legislation. Founder and President, Cathy Hartshorn, was awarded a generous $2,000 grant from the ASPCA to aid in FVDs mission. FVD has so far constructed 16 fences and freed 22 dogs from a life on the end of a chain or confinement in small spaces. FVD is grateful to the ASPCA for their generosity that has allowed even more dogs to enjoy the ability to exercise and move about freely in a fenced yard. 1) Be smooth - dont jerk or saw the steering wheel 2) Dont slam on the brakes - squeeze them firmly and quickly 3) When driving through a curve: a) Decrease your speed BEFORE the turn - its always better to enter the curve too slow rather than too fast. b) All braking should be done in a straight line PRIOR to entering the curve. c) Steer to the apex of the curve when you can see about a 45 degree angle across the turn. d) Be as close to the inside edge of the turn as possible. e) Once you turn into the curve the steering input should remain constant - one you hit the apex gradually accelerate. f) If you must brake during a turn - use a light squeeze of the pedal.

Wearing your seatbelt is your best defense against injury or death in the event of a crash. Despite this, far too many motorists still refuse to buckle up for a variety of reasons. In Vermont, in 2012, 77 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes of one type or another. About one third of those deaths were suspected alcohol/drug-caused crashes. Another third were suspected speed-related crashes. But perhaps the most startling statistic is the estimated 40% who were killed because they were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. It just doent make sense. Data demonstrates that seatbelts save lives. According to national sources, nearly 50% of those who are killed in motor vehicle crashes could have survived the crash if they had been using a seatbelt. Some non-users say, Im not driving very far. Well, the fact
is that three out of four crashes happen within 25 miles of home. Others say, Im riding in the back seat. You can still be thrown from a motor vehicle even if you are riding in the back seat. If you are not wearing a seatbelt, you can become a missile, endangering others in the vehicle with you. And some declare that they drive at night and police wont see them. These folks should know that law enforcement is increasing nighttime enforcement. In addition, there are more high-risk drivers on the road at night (impaired and drowsy drivers) which may present an increased risk of a crash. Surving a crash may be just a click away.

When wildlife ventures onto roads and highways, the results can be devastating for people and animals. In addition to creating roadkill, highways act as barriers that can halt animal migration, isolating wildlife and promoting inbreeding among disconnected populations. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department and VTrans are undergoing a two-year study to learn how to mitigate the effects of highways on wildlife populations and improve highway safety. The study area extends from Waterbury to Bolton Village, where researchers say wildlife populations are divided by I-89, US Route 2, a railroad line, local roads, and the Winooski River. The VTrans wildlife transportation committee has been working to improve wildlife migration corridors along roads for nearly a decade. Tropical Storm Irene and other recent flooding events have demonstrated the need for larger road culverts to improve flood resiliency. Jens Hawkins-Hilke, conservation planning biologist for the Fish & Wildlife Department, sees these larger culverts as an opportunity to give wildlife the chance to cross roads without incident. Hawkins-Hilke works with communities to improve migration corridors for wildlife. He cited this particular stretch of highway as a major roadblock for animals, particularly larger species such as bear, deer and moose. A bear looking to move from the Mt.
Mansfield area to Camels Hump in search of food or a mate is going to encounter a number of obstacles along the way, said Hawkins-Hilke. When they arrive at the highway, there is low concrete barrier blocking their way. Assuming they find their way around that, they still have to cross the interstate, Route 2, several town roads, and the railroad, any of which could end fatally for them and create a dangerous situation for drivers. Vermonts bear population is higher than it has ever been right now, resulting in an increase of crashes involving bears. And in 2012 Vermont motorists were involved in 98 collisions with moose, which frequently total vehicles and can be fatal to the driver. The study will deploy game cameras to measure the abundance of wildlife species and to determine areas along the road with a high incidence of wildlife crossing. Researchers hope to use this information to assess the current level of use of existing wildlife crossing structures and to prioritize locations for similar structures in the future. These culvert improvements really are a winwin for people and wildlife, said HawkinsHilke. They improve the infrastructure, increase flood resiliency, and allow wildlife to migrate safely without creating a hazard for drivers.
When Robert Johnson, state public health veterinarian, learned of a lethargic skunk with a broken leg that was removed properly from old North Beach in Burlington two weeks ago by a city parks official, he was relieved. Thats a good outcome, said Dr. Johnson, because the skunk later tested positive for rabies. We knew the animal had been handled properly by someone wearing gloves, and there was no chance for exposure. Vermont began its 17th Annual Rabies Bait Drop on Aug. 19. The baits will be dropped by low-flying aircraft hired by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) into carefully plotted corridors of remote lowland areas and valleys along the Vermont border and northern Chittenden County. Officials will also distribute the baits by hand in urban areas. The baits are a dark green, sweet-smelling, vanilla coated blister pack. When wildlife eat the bait they are vaccinated. Rabies is a viral disease found mainly in raccoons, foxes, bats and skunks that can infect domestic animals and people as well. The virus can spread through the bite or contact with saliva from an infected animal. Rabies vaccine if given soon after a human is bitten by a rabid
animal is highly effective. Once the signs and symptoms of rabies start to appear, there is no treatment and the disease is almost always fatal. Anyone who finds the bait should leave it untouched, unless it is discovered on a lawn or driveway. Remove the bait with a glove and wash your hands with soap and water. The bait is not harmful to children or pets, but direct skin contact should be avoided. Vermonters are asked to avoid any animal that shows strange behavior. Do not try to trap or capture the animal, but instead call the states Rabies Hotline at 1-800-472-2437 (1-800-4-RABIES).
