In Vermont, May 1st is almost as important as the opening of the firearms deer season, and while spring turkey hunting-related shootings are rare (last years season was incident-free) precautions are needed. Camouflage or drab colored clothing is almost mandatory to outwit a keen sighted gobbler. Unfortunately, camouflage has the same affect on other hunters as it has on the turkeys. With a handful of exceptions, all of our incidents have been caused by hunters who didnt positively identify the target before they pulled the trigger, said Chris Saunders, Hunter Education Coordinator. Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department urges hunters to consider these safety tips: - Never stalk a gobbling turkey. Your chances of getting close are poor, and you may be sneaking up on another hunter. - Avoid red, white, blue and black in clothing and equipment. A tom turkeys head has similar colors. - Stick with hen calls. A gobbler call might draw in other hunters. - Avoid unnecessary movement. This alerts turkeys and attracts hunters. - Dont hide so well that you impair your field of vision - Wrap your turkey in blaze orange for the hike back to the car. - Always sit with your back against a tree trunk, big log or a boulder

that is wider than your body. This protects you from being accidentally struck by pellets fired from behind you. - Place decoys on the far side of a tree trunk or a rock. This prevents you from being directly in the line of fire should another hunter mistakenly shoot at your decoy. - Never shoot unless youre absolutely sure of your target. Since only turkeys with beards are legal during the spring season, lack of positive identification could result in shooting an illegal bird, or worse, another hunter. - Wear hunter orange while moving from set-up to set-up. Twelve girls from Sunrise Gymnastics in Berlin traveled the last weekend of March to Bellows Falls High School to end this competitive season participating in USA Gymnastics Junior Olympics Vermont Championships. The youngest of them, Hallee Allen, won first place and the Vermont Champion title on beam in level 3 for the 5 to 7-year-old age group, with a very nice score of 9.575 points. Hallee also took bronze in all-around with 35.500 and in floor exercise competition (8.525) and finished 4th on vault (9.325) and 6th on bars (8.075). In the 10-year-old group at the same level, Olga Kissner took 5th place on vault with 9.325 points, Eva Stumpff was 8th on beam (8.950) and Camilla Pia-Needleman was 8th on vault (9.200). In the 9-year-old age group Tovah Williams finished 9th on vault with 9.150 points. Level 4 girls won two more bronze medals for Sunrise Gymnastics. Chloe Reynolds was 3rd in floor exercise with 9.300 points, and she also took 7th place on bars (8.675) and beam (9.250) and finished 8th in all-around competition with 36.050 among 9 to 10-year-old girls. In the same age group, Megan Krussman was 14th in floor exercise (7.950) and 15th on beam (8.100). n Theres something special going on here.. Employing a banzai run in a two-lap dash to the finish of Friday nights Nationwide Series race at Darlington Raceway, 18-year-old Chase Elliott muscled his way past Elliott Sadler on the final lap to score his second straight win in his seventh start in the series. Elliott, who restarted sixth on Lap 146, charged to the front and claimed victory in the VFW Sport Clips Help a Hero 200 in his first event at the fabled 1.366-mile track. The victory was Elliotts second in as many weeks and the second of his fledgling career. Sadler, who gambled on two tires for the final restart with two laps left, held the second spot. Matt Kenseth ran third, followed by polesitter Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, Kyle Larson and Kevin Harvick. I knew the guys on two tires (Sadler and Larson) were going to be a little slower than the guys on four, Elliott said of the final restart. Our lane went and Elliott (Sadler) got a little loose off (Turn) 2 and let me get to the outside, and that was where I wanted to be anyway. Elliott won the previous week at Texas Motor Speedway, but the victory at Darlington, where his father, Bill Elliott, won five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, had special significance. Darlington has always been my favorite place to watch a race, said Elliott, the youngest driver ever to win at Nationwide Series race at Darlington at 18 years, four months, four days. Just to be a part of this race is unbelievable. To win this thing is a day Ill never forget. Elliott also is the youngest driver ever to win two NNS races, and hes the youngest driver to lead the series points standings, a feat he achieved for the first time last week at Texas. On Friday night, Elliott extended his points lead to 13 over Regan Smith, who recovered from a spin to finish eighth. Naysayers beware.this boy is for real. Elliot asserted his superiority early in the race. After restarting fourth on Lap 24, he made short work of the cars in front on him. On Lap 27, he stormed past Harvick and Matt Kenseth into the second spot and seven laps later sped by Busch, the polesitter, for the lead. n Harvick followed into second place four laps later, and the top threeElliott, Harvick and Buschremained constant until NASCAR called a caution on Lap 59 for debris on the backstretch. During pit stops under the yellow, Harvick and Elliott swapped the top two positions, and Harvick led the field to green on Lap 65. By the time they got back to the stripe, Elliott had retaken the top spot, but the green-flag run didnt last long. On Lap 68, a wild wreck involving the Chevrolet of Dylan Kwasniewski and the Ford of Chris Buescher slowed the field for the third time. Elliott controlled the action through two subsequent yellows but lost four positions during pit stops under caution on Lap 89 for Smiths spin in Turn 1. Busch assumed the lead off pit road, with Kenseth, Harvick, Larson and Elliott trailing for a restart on Lap 94. n The Outlaw Eddie MacDonald stayed home this weekend at Lee USA Speedway to take on the regulars of the American Canadian Tour in the personally elusive New Hampshire Governors Cup 150. Starting on the pole MacDonald steadily slipped back as far as 10th in the field during the early going bringing yet another win miss to minds of most in attendance. Not to be outdone the versatile racer strategized to reverse his slide and charged forward late in the race to seal the win over fellow New Hampshire drivers Joey Polewarczyk and Wayne Helliwell Jr. at his familys track. The win was MacDonald first career ACT win at Lee in his ninth start at the 3/8ths mile speedway and his fifth career ACT Late Model win. Serie ACT regular combatants Alex Labbe and Stephane Decoste finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Defending race champion Jimmy Hebert recovered from dead last, 30th, and charged to a 6th place finish. ACT has a weekend off before heading to Thunder Road in Barre, VT for the Merchants Bank 150 on Sunday, April 27. The annual car show will be held in downtown Barre on Saturday, April 26 before an afternoon practice session. n The 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season has been one of feast or famine for Kevin Harvickand on Saturday night at Darlington Raceway, Harvick enjoyed the delectable taste of victory. Passing Dale Earnhardt Jr. on the next-tolast lap of the second attempt at a green-white-checkered-flag finish, Harvick won Sundays Bojangles Southern 500 and all but locked himself into the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup as the first two-time winner in the series this year (he still needs to finish in the top 30 in points after race No. 26 and attempt to qualify for every race). In the second race of the season, Harvick dominated in winning at Phoenix, before a spate of mechanical issues waylaid him in four of five subsequent events. On Saturday at Darlington, he was the class of the field again, leading 238

Crafton hopes to make it two in a row at Kansas Speedway in early May, which would be a first at any track for the veteran. Craftons longest break between two wins is 79 races (Charlotte 2008 Iowa 2011). If he can pick up the win in the SFP 250, he would also become the first driver to win multiple races at the track. There have been 13 different winners in as many races at Kansas Speedway. If Crafton can take home the checkered flag at Kansas he would become the first driver to win back-to-back races on the schedule since Kyle Busch accomplished the feat last year with wins at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Dover International Speedway.
