Police step up patrols for welcome weekend

By Whitney Gronski-Buffa Pioneer Staff Writer

BIG RAPIDS As Ferris State University students return to campus this weekend, local law enforcement agencies will increase the number of patrol cars on Big Rapids streets to combat the underage drinking that tends to characterize Bulldog Beginnings. For the past decade or more, Big Rapids Department of Public Safety Director Frank West said grants from the Ofce of Highway Safety Planning has made it possible for agencies in the region to step up patrols during big events, such as the rst week back to class at Ferris and the Wheatland Music Festival, which begins on Sept. 9. All agencies in the region, including Michigan State Police, Mecosta County Sheriffs Ofce, Ferris State University Department of Public Safety and BRDPS, utilize the grant money to pay ofcers for the extra time they spend on the road during event weekends. The grant is awarded based on the number of alcohol-related tickets, such as minor in possession citations, and drunken driving arrests a region has each year, so ofcers receiving pay from grant funds focus on those kinds of offenses. They dont do general patrol work while theyre doing that, theyre specically targetting alcohol, West said. For MIPs, we just write a ticket, but we typically end up arresting a few drunk drivers on those complaints. Occassionally, youll get someone whos disorderly or who has warrants out, so theres other enforcement things that occur just from being involved with alcohol. Although ofcers will have their eyes on Ferris students this weekend, West said students these days tend to be more cautious when it comes to alcohol. However, their sensabilities arent the same when it comes to drugs. The numbers are down because I think (students) use more common sense than they used to, West said. We used to write about 70 to 100 (minor in possession) tickets on that weekend. Now, we might write out 20 or 30. ... Nationally, the numbers are down for drunken driving deaths dramatically. Unfortunately, drugged driving deaths are on the increase. Thats the trend of the way things are now. In 2010, Michigan saw more than 41,000 drunken driving arrests, which was down from 2000 when almost 61,000 were arrested for drunken driving, according to the Ofce of Highway Safety Planning.

community groups to participate in the event. Organizations wanting to participate are asked to provide their own tables and chairs. Access to electricity will be available upon request. Activities already scheduled during the tournament will include a rock-climbing wall courtesy of Cran-Hill Ranch, a no-hands pizza eating contest sponsored by Mancinos Pizza and Grinders, an ice cream eating competition in front of the Old Pioneer Store and Emporium, souvenir engraved dog-tags for sale at Living Water Christian Resource Center, a slamdunk contest and other activities throughout downtown. In addition to basketball, wed like to create a street-fair vibe throughout downtown, Clark said. We will have of Michigan Avenue closed off for the 3-on-3 tournament, and hope many activities will be available for all those who attend. In addition to attracting people to Big Rapids, organizers hope activities on the sidewalks will generate sales for local businesses and create awareness for organizations, said chamber spokesperson Theresa Sutton. Were trying to get those cash registers ringing in Big Rapids and the surrounding community, Sutton said. That was one of our main focuses, to attract people to our businesses. This also will be an educational and awareness tool for participating community groups and organizations. Big Rapids Red Hacker tournament has been marketed throughout Mecosta County, as well as in the Cadillac, Greenville and Ludington areas, which have held similar 3-on-3 basketball events. The Chamber is excited about this event. The DBA is excited about this event. We want other organizations to get excited about this event and get involved, so that it will best serve that organizations mission, Clark said. Other events scheduled in Big Rapids on Sept. 17 include the American Cancer Societys annual Relay for Life at Hemlock Park and a Ferris State University home football game against Ohio Dominican University. For more information about setting up a booth at the tournament, to volunteer or sponsor the event, contact Theresa Sutton at the chamber at (231) 796-7649. provides, the bones can rub against each other. Cartilage deterioration can affect the shape and makeup of the joint so it no longer functions smoothly. Also, bruises called bone marrow lesions can develop inside the bone and may cause knee pain. Trial results recently published in a leading arthritis journal showed that chondroitin sulphate treatment signicantly reduced cartilage loss and bone marrow lesions from osteoarthritis of the knee. Chondroitin is a natural substance in the body that helps keep cartilage healthy by absorbing uid and providing building blocks to produce new cartilage. Chondroitin may also block enzymes that break down cartilage. Recent advances in MRI made it possible for Dr. Jean-Pierre Pelletier and his team at University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre in Canada to measure for the rst time the impact of chondroitin sulfate on cartilage loss and other changes to the joint, including bone marrow lesions. The latest technology enabled researchers to measure and demonstrate signicant improvements after treatment with chondroitin sulphate. By six months, patients showed signicantly less cartilage loss compared with those receiving placebo. By 12 months, treatment signicantly decreased bone marrow lesion size. Reducing bone marrow lesions may help lessen some of the pain associated with osteoarthritis, said Dr. Pelletier. From these results, we can conclude that chondroitin sulfate is a safe drug that signicantly reduces the volume of cartilage loss and slows down the progression of osteoarthritis in the knee. He notes, Patients must be provided highly puried pharmaceutical-grade chondroitin sulphate, the one used in this study, as this is the only one that can guarantee such efcacy and specically, safety results.

videography are the second largest budgetbreakers. Couples can hire a photographer and videographer for the ceremony, then leave reception photographs to friends, family and digital cameras. To avoid the cost of a live band, brides and grooms can opt for MP3 playlists, customized CDs and speaker rentals over pricey bands. Finally, hiring a wedding coordinator can save time, manage stress and get better deals. So, heres a toast to tweaking old traditions to make a dream wedding nancially attainable -; and to save enough money for a long, relaxing honeymoon. Cheers!

Time-Saving Solutions to Finish Your College Degree

(NewsUSA) - Its a goal of many recent posthigh school students -- go to a great university and graduate with a bachelors degree in four years. But why is that easier said than done, and what can be done to stay on schedule? According to the National Center for Education Statistics, fewer than 60 percent of rst-time students who sought a bachelors degree or its equivalent while enrolled at a four-year institution full time completed the degree at that institution within six years.

Degree completion remains at the forefront of the national agenda as experts predict that, in just 10 years, more than 60 percent of all new jobs will require a college education. Organizations such as the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) are increasing efforts to raise graduation rates by presenting alternative ways to earn a degree quickly. Time was the biggest obstacle to getting my degree, says 54-year-old Briana Taravella. As time advances, the likelihood of degree completion becomes even more remote. But with alternative methods, such as Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), offered by some colleges and universities and services such as LearningCounts.org, completing credits is more convenient for students -- especially adult learners.

Tips for Brides On Budgets

(NewsUSA) - Between the thrilling proposal and the pre-wedding whirlwind -; setting the date, nding the perfect wedding dress, planning the honeymoon -; weddings should feel joyous and romantic. But after the wedding, couples should enjoy their newly wedded bliss -; not panic about digging themselves out of debt. According to the Association for Wedding Professionals International, the average wedding costs between $18,000 and $21,000. In these difcult economic times, couples might need to minimize the cost of their wedding. But brides on budgets do not need to whittle their guest list from 200 to 10. Here are some affordable -; and tasteful -; measures couples can take to stay within their budget. What eats up wedding cash? Wedding receptions usually account for half of a weddings cost. Dinner and drinks add up, especially if couples pay for a full or open bar. To save money on the bubbly, couples should nix the mixed drinks. Soon-to-be-marrieds can serve champagne during the toast, then offer beer and wine for the rest of the evening. Give clumsier guests white wine, not red, and the evening should progress with fewer mishaps at a lower cost. For dinner, couples should think outside the catering-company box. Local restaurants might make better deals. Classy catering can come from unexpected places. Boston Market restaurants provide full-service catering options with elegant entres like roasted sirloin, turkey or rotisserie chicken, and a selection of gourmet sides. The cost? From $14.99 to $21.99 a head. After the reception, photography and

Red Hacker Basketball Tournament Coming Soon

From Staff Reports

I had to work hard every day, but I was able to earn credit that would have taken longer going through classes, says LearningCounts.org student Taravella as she references her effort to convert her work experiences to college credit through PLA.

BIG RAPIDS With less than one month until tip-off, organizers of Big Rapids rst-ever Red Hacker Basketball Tournament are looking to nalize details for the one-day, 3-on-3 event. In addition to a full day of action-packed basketball on Michigan Avenue, many local businesses will ll the sidewalks with booths, mini-games, special sales and more. Sidewalk space is still available during the event, and is being opened up to local nonprots, churches, service organizations and other community groups. Organizers hope to make the Red Hacker event one of the biggest days of the year in downtown Big Rapids. The Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce is collaborating with the Downtown Business Association to make sure all of the downtown businesses are a part of our inaugural event, said Dave Clark, event organizer, chamber president elect and Pioneer Editor In Chief. Once weve heard from our downtown business owners this week, and we are able to determine who is not going to have an event on Sept. 17, we would like to open it up to nonprots, churches, service organizations and other community groups interested in having an event downtown. We think this would be a great opportunity to have a fundraiser for their respective organizations. Events may include organizing mini-games, offering giveaways, setting up informational booths, selling bottled water and other items and more. There is no charge to local

As demonstrated by students like Taravella, PLA saves a lot of time toward degree completion. Hundreds of colleges and universities have used this system to award credit for learning gained outside the classroom -- such as work experience, civic activity, corporate training and independent studies. In addition to PLA, here is a list of other ways students are earning college credit while saving time: * * Portfolio-based Assessments CLEP Exams

* American Council on Education (ACE) Guides * * Evaluation of Local Training Challenge Exams

at home and in the community. The program is already in place in thousands of schools across the United States, where it is successfully used to prevent and decrease bullying and other disruptive behavior. PeaceBuilders is designed to combat bullying early through a combination of school-based programs, parent training and community outreach. Parents are a critical part of the program, ensuring that practices are duplicated at home. The PeaceBuilders program can be tailored to ages and developmental levels from preschool through high school. The program works by rst identifying risk factors for bullying, including violent or aggressive behavior, drug use and tobacco use. PeaceBuilders provides tools to foster civil behavior and to discourage disruptive behavior. Then a roadmap is created that includes regularly praising children and teens for good behavior at school and at home, while discouraging bad behavior. Involving parents in the behavior improvement before adolescence helps communities create a way of life that encourages people to be nicer to each other. For persons with high blood pressure -- and thats one in three Americans over age 20, according to a 2010 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report -- Fidos calming effect can be a life saver. Studies have disclosed that petting a dog reduces blood pressure and heart rate. This stress buster provides positive health benets for the owners of 77.5 million dogs that reside in 39 percent of households, according to The Humane Society of the United States. High blood pressure and stress contribute to the fourth leading cause of death in America: stroke. The National Vital Statistics Report indicated that 137,000 Americans died of stroke in 2010. The American Stroke Association estimated that Americans spent $73.7 billion for stroke-related medical costs and disability in 2010.

Stop Bullying Before It Starts

(NewsUSA) - Whats the best way to stop a bully? Dont let him (or her) become one. Multiple studies have shown that teaching children positive social skills and taking proactive steps to prevent and discourage delinquent behavior can go a long way toward preventing bullying and providing a more effective learning environment. Unfortunately, childhood bullying has become a 24/7 problem, and the anonymity of the Internet makes it more difcult to identify and punish bullies. But programs in which schools and the community work together to prevent bullying and reduce disruptive behavior can make a difference. The benets of bullying prevention programs include freeing teachers to teach, instead of spending their time disciplining students. These programs also cut down on chaos in the classroom and foster a positive learning environment. Michelle Molina, president and CEO of PeaceBuilders says that Children need to be given the skills so they can solve these problems and adults need to be the guides on the sides. According to the nonprot organization Child Trends, PeaceBuilders has been found to work in increasing conict resolution skills and reducing aggression and bullying. PeaceBuilders is a program designed to foster a positive environment not only in schools, but

Dogs Foster Activity While Improving Vascular Health

(NewsUSA) - Mans best friend provides more than mere companionship. Dogs encourage humans to exercise daily -- come rain or shine. The need to take a daily walk provides dog owners with a great form of exercise, said Leila Mureebe, a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery. Exercise is good for the bodys blood supply, for maintaining proper body weight and for controlling blood pressure.

Thirty minutes of daily exercise, not smoking, and proper nutrition are included in risk factor management. A United States National Institutes of Health-funded study of 2,000 adults discovered that persons who regularly walked their dogs were more physically active and less likely to be obese than non-dog walkers.

Ive seen improvements in high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes when patients enter into a routine of daily exercise, not smoking, and healthy eating, said Dr. Mureebe. A brisk 30-minute walk with your dog is good for both of you. For more information on vascular health, log onto: VascularWeb.org.
