Notes From the Executive Director

Judy Colgan
Executive Director RMCMI

We are working on putting together the 100th Anniversary Book. Please remember to send me any articles/items that you think should be included. If you are a past president or long time member, please consider sending a short letter or paragraph to be included about your time with the Institute. This book will have to be put together well in advance, so please consider sending information to me as soon as possible. The 100th Anniversary will be a special occasion not to be missed! Some have expressed concern that the event falls before the July 4 holiday. Since July 4 is on a Wednesday, we hope that people will take the opportunity to make it a family vacation in beautiful Vail, Colorado. There will be pre and post conference events planned for those who wish to raft, fish, and numerous other fun things! July 4 celebrations in Vail are also really special and it would be a great opportunity to take it all in. Exciting things continue to happen at RMCMI, thanks for your continued support

The fall was quite a busy time for me. I attended the Utah Mining Association, New Mexico Mining Association and Texas Mining and Rec l a m a t i o n A sso ciat io n annual meetings. It was interesting to see how the other state associations hold their meetings, and to give input on some of our programs as well. Many of our own members are also members of these state associations, and they really appreciated having our participation

About 55 students participated in the afternoon and were full of great questions. Their ideas about energy production were pretty varied, and we

Time Capsule Contents Revealed!

The 75th Anniversary Time Capsule was retrieved from the Denver Public Library. It is in a custom made box from Dupont and Buckley Powder. It is clearly marked on each end High Explosives Dangerous. We had to be escorted from the library, so that we wouldnt be stopped by security along the way. The contents will be revealed at the 100th Anniversary conference in Vail. Please consider what items we might want to put into the box to be opened again at the 125th conference. Who would have thought 25 years ago that the state of things would have changed enough that an explosives box could cause such concern? What will the comments be at the 125th Anniversary on what we include next year?

RMCMI Patrons Continue to Support Education

The Patron Program had a record breaking year of contributions this year. With the additional income from matching company gifts, the silent auction and mulligan money, a total of almost $60,000 has been collected this year. Many thanks to Becki Parker and BHP Billiton for their efforts in helping to fund this important project this year. BHP Billiton contributed $16,200, thanks to challenges within their departments, a personal challenge from Becki Parker to match funds and the generosity of the BHP Matching Gifts program. Maybe another company should challenge BHP to see who could raise the most funds for 2012! Remember that this program funds scholarships for a total of $5,000 tuition credit over two years for eight engineering/geology students and $1,000 annually for eight technical school scholarships. These funds also help to provide a free trip for the scholars to the Annual Meeting & Conference. All applications are online now at www.rmcmi.org, and the deadline is February 1, 2012. Please encourage those who might be eligible to apply. The industry needs to foster young people to continue to advance the coal industry, and this provides an excellent opportunity to do just that. Please consider increasing your contributions to this important program and encouraging your colleagues to participate as well. Also, remember to check with your companies to see if they offer to match charitable contributions.

We will hold another silent auction this year. Silent auctions will remain silent, and we will choose some larger items for a fun live auction during the Monday evening events in Vail. The first auction raised almost $6,000 for the program. We are presently accepting contributions and commitments to this event now. Contact the RMCMI office at 303/948-3300 or mail@rmcmi.org to donate. Scholarship applications now available online at www.rmcmi.org

An investment in knowledge pays the best dividends.
