Batty Framed Decorating

This colorful specimen board is sure to draw attention when hung in your home for Halloween. To make, use a die-cutting tool or a bat punch to make 24 bat shapes from assorted scrapbookingpaper colors and patterns. Bend the wings slightly to create a multidimensional look. Cover a 12-inch cardboard or plywood square with even-weave fabric, taping excess fabric on the back. Stack two adhesive dots on the back of each bat, and press bats onto the fabriccovered square. Remove the backing from the frame, and attach specimen board to the backing with hook-and-loop squares.

Fall Mini Pumpkin Wreath

What You Need:
_ Twig wreath form _ Mini-pumpkins to cover the form _ Hot-glue gun _ Floral wire _ Black Pipe Cleaner _ Black ribbon (grosgrain, satin, or raffia) _ Plastic Spiders

Instructions:

1. Start with an 18-inch twig wreath. Youll want to find one that has a fairly flat top section, so theres enough surface for the glue to secure the pumpkins. This size wreath took 13 pumpkins, but when you buy your materials at a craft store, be sure to lay out pumpkins around the wreath to see how many will fit. 2. Once your arrangement is set, start gluing each pumpkin in place and let it dry. Were gluing ours on so each one touches the next, but at the top we left about a 6-inch space for our bow. 3. Little plastic spiders are a fun addition as well. Just dot the legs with a bit of hot glue and set down on one of the pumpkins for a spooky Halloween touch. 4. Finally, youll need a bow and Ive got a great simple technique for that. Youll need to find wired ribbon in a 2 or 3 inch width. The wire helps you arrange the bow and the streamers easily and will help too, if you keep the bow from year to year -- you can just fluff it out as needed. 5. Lay a 24 strip of ribbon down on the table. Now, take about a 36 piece and leave a 15 inch streamer. Begin to loop

the ribbon from side to side, beginning with smaller loops, gradually making the loops wider. End up with another 15 inch streamer. Lay down a black pipe cleaner or a 12 length of floral wire. Now you can pick up the ends of the 24 strip and knot it securely around all of the loops and the wire. Theres your bow! 6. Use the wire to attach the bow to the wreath, or if you wish you can hot glue it onto the front. I know you -- and your guests -- will enjoy seeing this wreath.

Ghost Wreath

Hang this apparition-adorned wreath on your front door to greet Halloween guests and scare away mischievous tricksters. In a well-ventilated area, spray-paint a grapevine wreath white; let dry. Place a sheet of waxed paper on a cutting board and roll out white oven-bake clay (such as Sculpey) to 1/8-inch thick. Using the photo as a guide (or our free patterns), cut out two ghost shapes from the clay with a crafts knife. Bake the shapes in the oven according to the manufacturers instructions. Once cool, glue the ghosts to the wreath with strong glue. Tie a gauzy ribbon in a bow and attach it to the wreath with wire.

Tin Can Luminarias

What You Need:
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ Tracing paper Permanent marker Clean empty tin cans Hammer and large nail Spray paint: orange and black Wire Tea-light candles

Instructions:

1. Using tracing paper, trace the pumpkin face or bat patterns (download below), or make your own design. Transfer the pattern of your choice to a clean tin can; go over the transferred pattern with a permanent marker. Fill the tin can with water; place it in the freezer. When the water in the can is frozen, remove the can from the freezer. 2. Use a hammer and nail to puncture the design in the can. Punch two holes in the rim of the can on opposite sides, centering the design between the two holes. Let the ice melt; allow the can to dry completely. 3. Cut a 16-inch length of wire. Insert one end of the wire into a hole in the rim; twist the end of the wire around the wire length. Insert the other wire end through the other hole in the rim, securing the wire in the same manner. 4. Spray paint the pumpkin can orange and the bat can black. Let the paint dry. Place a tea-light candle inside the can and hang securely from a branch or garden hook.

Pretty Pumpkins Tablecloth

What You Need:
_ 2/3-yard of 36-inch-wide black wool felt _ 1 yard of 24-inch-wide, ironon fusible web (such as Light Stream-A-Seam) _ Freezer paper _ Pencil and scissors _ Iron _ 1-1/2 yards of 42-inch-wide ivory cotton print _ 3 yards (2 packages) of black jumbo rickrack _ Sewing machine and thread _ Embroidery needle _ Embroidery floss: ivory _ 1 yard of 20-inch-wide, lightweight, tear-away fabric stabilizer (such as Sulky TearEasy Stablizer) _ Teflon appliqu pressing sheet _ Fabric marker

Instructions:

1. Following the manufac turer s instructions, apply fusible web to the back of the black wool felt. Do not remove the paper backing. 2. Trace the shaded areas of the pattern (corner details and pumpkins) onto freezer paper and cut out. (The freezer paper shapes will serve as a template.) 3. Using an iron, press each freezer paper shape, shiny side down, onto the felt. Cut out the shapes along the pattern edges. Peel off the freezer paper. 4. To make the tablecloth, cut two 34-1/2inch squares from the ivory cotton print. Cut four 26-inch lengths of rickrack. 5. Place one print square, right side up, on a flat work surface. Pin a length of rickrack along one edge of the print square, making sure to slope the rickrack off the fabric at each end so the rickrack wont overlap at the corners. Note: The corners of the tablecloth will not lie flat if the rickrack overlaps.

6. Repeat for the remaining sides. Baste the rickrack in place. 7. Using a 1/4-inch seam allowance, sew the print squares together with the right sides facing, leaving a 7-inch opening on one side for turning. Turn right side out and press. Whipstitch the opening closed. 8. Position a piece of stabilizer over the pumpkin pattern and trace the pumpkin pattern, including the stitch-line guides. Repeat to make a total of four stem-andvine stitching templates. 9. Applique the tablecloth. Place a pumpkin-stitching template onto the right side of a pumpkin felt cutout, aligning all edges. Using the templates as a guide, outline the pumpkins and stems with running stitches. Note: Use three strands of floss for all stitching. Carefully remove the stabilizer by placing your thumb on the stitches and pulling the stabilizer away from your thumb. Repeat for each pumpkin.

10. Outline the ornate corners with running stitches 1/4 inch from all edges. 11. Arrange the cutouts on the tablecloth, removing the paper backing as you work; hand-press the cutouts into place. To avoid scorching, place a Teflon applique pressing sheet over each cutout. Fuse all cutouts into place with an iron. 12. Arrange the stem-and-vine stitching template over a pumpkin stem. Use a fabric marker to trace the vines onto the fabric. Note: When tracing, apply mild pressure with the fabric marker so that the ink will slightly seep through the stabilizer onto the fabric. Repeat for all vines. 13. Lay the tablecloth on a flat surface and position a piece of stabilizer under a vine area to be stitched. Use a small zigzag stitch or satin stitch to machine-sew the vine outline. Repeat for all vines and then remove the stabilizer.
