HUDDLE
The nose will set the huddle, approximately 2 yards off the ball. We will have two captains in
the huddle “MIKE” and “FREE”. MIKE will get the call from the sideline and FREE will take
care of the organization in the huddle. FREE will also be responsible for situational
communication in the huddle (down – distance – field (hash) – etc.). FREE will have his job
done before MIKE gives the play call. MIKE will give a verbal command of “READY -
READY” and we will break the huddle with a “SWARM” call.

FM (align to our bench for signal)

DTNTD
CBBC
***If MIKE misses the signal, tap your hand on top of your helmet. This lets the coach know
he needs to give the signal again and we do not waste a time-out. Talking in the huddle will
NOT be tolerated.

The basic calls will consist of two to five parts: in the following sequence.
1. Disguise call
2. Front; technique
3. T-N-T stunt.
4. Attack of the second level players.
5. Coverage; 2nd and 3rd level people.

Once the huddle has been broken, the defensive players should get into their post huddle
alignment and keep their eyes on the offense. The secondary should be looking for the receivers
leaving the huddle and the Linebackers should be looking for the tight end for a strength call.
MIKE will give the first strength call with BATS repeating for acknowledgement. If we miss
call the strength, give a “CHECK” call and correct the strength. If the offense is balanced we
will declare the strong side to the TE. If the offense is balanced in the backfield, with two TE’s,
we will declare the call to the wide side (open side) of the field if the ball is on the hash, but if it
is in the middle of the field, we will declare according the strong arm of the QB unless
tendencies from films dictate otherwise. Any other strength call will be to the two-receiver side.
A LEFT or RIGHT call is made for the direction of the TE. Certain defensive calls are
dependant upon the LEFT or RIGHT call. MIKE will make the call twice before
acknowledgement is returned.

MOVEMENTS
**This will be the second signal given from the sideline. If no movement signal is given, we
will align in BASE and play whatever is called.
Disguise calls:
1. Cheat – Stunters will creep up to half the distance that you would be in Base.
2. Show – We will line up in the stunt and show the QB.
3. Up – start in Base and creep as the QB gives his cadence. Run your stunt from this alignment.
4. Prowl – pre-snap movements designed to confuse the offense. Prowling is primarily for the M-B’s-D’s-
AND FS. It is important when prowling, we do not take ourselves out of our responsibilities.

2
STIMULUS RESPONSE
This is an alert to teach technique and understanding of the player’s responsibility.
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN:
Response are broken down into three categories:
STIMULUS RESPONSE

Anchor – close hard at full speed and anchor the end. Keep outside arm and leg free.
Outside – when EMOL arc releases or reach blocks, close hard one gap outside. If pass play
coverage.
Seal – when EMOL releases inside to seal for flow away, collapse down the LOS looking for
cutback, once you reach A gap sprint to proper pursuit angle.
Release – play coverage
Pass set – play coverage
C-FS-C:
STIMULUS C-RESPONSE F-RESPONSE
QB on Hands Alley
QB off Coverage Coverage
Hands – get your hands on the closest receiver and fight for leverage, you have secondary
contain vs. run. (This is our PUNCH technique).
Alley – the area just outside the EMOL. QB on option.

CHASE and COLLAPSE TECHNIQUE (these techniques do not go into effect until the ball is run
away from you).
CHASE:
1. This defender is usually the outer most rush defender.
2. This defender is responsible for bootleg and reverse.
3. Once you read ball away, you will pursue as deep as the ball, keeping the ball carrier on
your inside shoulder.
4. Chase the ball until the ball carrier reaches the opposite B gap.
5. Once the ball reaches opposite B gap, you will take your proper pursuit angle and
proceed to make the tackle down field.
6. You are waiting for change of direction of the ball.
COLLAPSE:
1. The outside Dog will usually have the collapse technique.
2. You are looking for any potential cutback play.
3. Once you read ball away, you will collapse down the LOS looking for the cutback.
4. Once the ball reaches the opposite A gap, you will take your proper pursuit angle and
make the tackle down field.

KEY TERMINOLOGY FOR STOPPING THE RUN

FORCE – typically, the force defender will have pitch on option and no pass responsibility vs.
pass. You must make the play on any outside runs to you. You aiming point is the backside
number on the ball carriers jersey. If you get cracked, the contain man now becomes force.

CONTAIN – is also considered secondary force. You will become the primary force defender
on any crack block. You are a pass defender first and run defender second. You are responsible
for any halfback passes and stop and go routes. You do not support the run until the ball has
crossed the LOS.

ALLEY – you check #2 on pass. You will have QB on option, with your aiming point the
inside number on his jersey. The alley course is an inside – out route similar to a banana.

LMP – (Last Man in Pursuit) is usually the backside corner. Your first responsibility is to
secure the #1 receiver on your side. Your pursuit angle is to save a touchdown and not allow the
cutback or allow the ball to cross your face. You will never cross the far hash unless it is to save
a touchdown.
