Abstract
The science of statistics is dealing with the collection, processing
and evaluation of information. The complexity of today's realit y
provides an opportunity for using data and statistics to obfuscate reality
rather than to illuminate. Proper and adequate education protects
citizens and helps them to distinguish fraud from the truth.
In this work, lurking risks to deceive the public in a statistical
survey will be presented. We will concentrate our effort on the

presentation of charts, in the selection of the sample, in measures of

centrality and variability, on number indexes and on misuse of
statistical data, accidental or purposeful.
