Slow Flyer On the spring day when Dillinger the dragon was born, his parents proudly snorted smoke signals announcing his birth far and wide. Every few minutes Dillinger s father checked to make sure the baby was sleeping comfortably. Dillinger s mother fed him warm coals whenever he woke up. I can hardly wait until he starts flying, said Dillinger s father. Well, it will be a while yet, laughed Dillinger s mother. He s only ten and a half hours old. Some dragons don t fly until they ve reached their two-week birthday. On his two-week birthday, Dillinger s entire family gathered around with gifts. Grandma Smudge gave him a pair of goggles. Keeps the grit out of your eyes when you re flying through dust storms, she said. Cousin Flamesender gave him a bottle of snake oil. He told him to rub a little of it on his wings before going out on long flights. Dillinger s father set him at the very top of a medium-sized stalagmite in their cave. Fly down into Mommies arms. Dillinger flexed his wings. Everyone cheered. And then he slowly slid down the slope of the stalagmite, losing a few of his bottom scales along the way. Before the day was over and all the relatives had gone home, Dillinger had tried to fly thirteen times. Finally his mother said, That s enough. If we keep this up he s not going to have any scales left at all. He just needs a bit more time. But the weeks of spring drifted into summer and still Dillinger failed to fly. Dillinger s father brought in flight specialists. Nothing they tried helped Dillinger fly. By the time autumn leaves were turning the fiery colors of a dragon s breath, Dillinger s mother and father had given up. It seemed that he would spend his life walking. Dillinger felt bad. He really did want to fly. Sadly, he took a job working for a hot air balloon company. Dillinger had no trouble providing hot air. He simply breathed up into the opening at the base of the balloon. One day as they sailed by a mountaintop, the balloon caught on a rock and tore. Soon it was plunging downward. People screamed. They hung onto Dillinger. Before he had time to think about it, Dillinger s great wings were moving up and down. The balloon was gone. He was flying! Everyone cheered as he circled, landed and let them safely off. You can imagine the surprise in the eyes of Dillinger s father and mother as they saw their son flying home to tell them about his adventure.
