Ancient Athens and Sparta Grade level: 6th Length of lesson: 1 class period

Purpose: Students should the basic principles of society in ancient Greece Learning Objectives Students will understand and be able to explain what ancient Athens and Sparta was like. Students will be able to identify and define terms related to ancient Athens and Sparta

Illinois Learning Standard(s) Addressed: 18.B.3a Analyze how individuals and groups interact with and within institutions (e.g., educational, military). 17.C.3a Explain how human activity is affected by geographic factors. Materials: Athens and Sparta comparison worksheets, textbooks, Venn Diagram Introduction: video about Sparta Lesson: As a class we will compare and contrast pictures from Athens and Sparta and go over the main differences between the images Students will fill in worksheets about daily life in Athens and Sparta using their textbooks Students will briefly explain which city state they would prefer to live in and why and class will fill in a Venn diagram about the two places Assessment: worksheets and explanation of which city state they would prefer to be a part of

Closure/ Wrap up: Students will briefly explain which city state they would prefer to live in and why.
