Flying penguins, spaghetti harvest? Its only April Fools!

Unlike most of the other nonfoolish holidays, the history of April Fools Day, sometimes called All Fools Day, is not totally clear. It is not like Halloween, where despite an interesting history, most people just put on Halloween costumes, get candy, and leave it at that. There really wasnt a first April Fools Day that can be pinpointed on the calendar. Some believe it sort of evolved simultaneously in several cultures at the same time, from celebrations involving the first day of spring. The closest point in time that can be identified as the beginning of this tradition was in 1582, in France. Prior to that year, the new year was celebrated for eight days, beginning on March 25. The celebration culminated on April 1. With the reform of the calendar under Charles IX, the Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Years Day was moved to January 1.

Those Were The Days

However, communications being what they were in the days when news traveled by foot, many people did not receive the news for several years. Others, the more obstinate crowd, refused to accept the new calendar and continued to celebrate the new year on April 1. These backward folk were labeled as fools by the general populace. They were subject to some ridicule, and were often sent on fools errands or were made the butt of other practical jokes. This harassment evolved, over time, into a tradition of prankplaying on the first day of April. The tradition eventually spread to England and Scotland in the eighteenth century. It was later introduced to the American colonies of both the English and French. April Fools Day thus developed into an international fun fest, so to speak, with different nationalities specializing in their own brand of humor at the expense of their friends and families. There has been some very interesting April 145 W. Fourth St. Fools Hoaxs Ft. Jennings, OH that have been very successful in duping a lot of people. Here is a

look at some of the most noteworthy. Big Ben to go digital In 1980 it was claimed the famous face of Big Ben was to be replaced with a digital display. Hundreds of angry Brits contacted the BBC to complain. Spaghetti Harvest In 1957 BBC news show Panarama told viewers that because of a warm winter farmers in Switzerland were seeing a bumper spaghetti crop. Footage showed the farmers pulling spaghetti from trees. Left Handed Whopper In 1998 Burger King took out adverts in major press launching their new Left Handed Whopper which they said had been specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans by rotating all the ingredients 180 degrees. Eifel Tower to Move In 1986 French people were amazed to see reports in the Parisien that the Eiffel Tower was set to be dismantled and moved to Euro Disney. The Sydney Iceberg In 1978 a millionaire businessman said he had towed an iceberg from Antartica and was going to sell it as ice cubes - when people gathered to see it arrive in Sydney harbor they found it was made from shaving foam. Drunk driving on the internet In 1994 PC Computing magazine said that is was due to become law that people should not use the internet while drunk. Whistling Carrots In 2002 Tesco supermarkets took out advertising in national newspapers for genetically modified whistling carrots. When fully cooked, it said, airholes caused the vegetable to whistle. Weather Machine In 1981 the Guardian newspaper reported that scientists had developed a machine which could control the weather. They also promised snow every Christmas from then on. Instant color TV Swedens most famous April Fools Day hoax occurred on April 1, 1962. STV, the only television channel in Sweden, and it broadcast in black and white. The station announced that their technical expert, Kjell Stensson, was going to describe a process that would allow people to view color images on their existing black-and-white sets. by placing a pair of nylon stockings over the screen. Thousands of TV views admitted they had fallen for the hoax.

Some phrases weve heard since we were knee-high to a duck; others, have an eloquence to them; you just love saying them as they roll right off your tongue like butter. Others still, trace back to our early Sunday school days when, trying to recall some of those begets and begots in the Old Testament, we remember a name, just because of the phrase that made it popular. Case in point: Old as Methuselah (easier to say than to spell). Its long been a favorite; and for anyone attending Southern Baptist Vacation Bible Schools, its a common one. But for those who mayve missed that memo, whats the scoop? Well, in case you didnt know, Methuselah, was Noahs grandpa, and is believed by some to be oldest man in recorded history. The Genesis account (5:27) tells us that Methuselah lived to be 969 years old. (But more impressive than this, he was fathering sons --namely Noahs father, Lamech-- at age 187.) As a result, Methuselah has become the proverbial symbol of longevity. Old as Methuselah traces back as far as the 14th century, which makes the phrase itself, almost as old as the man. Ironically, when compared to other ancient near eastern writings suggesting certain

Old as Methuselah
antediluvian kings (big word for pre-flood) lived for thousands of years, Methuselah, by some standards, was downright young. No way to know how years were counted back then. But given that Genesis goes to great length to factor ages into Noahs genealogy, its interesting to put a pencil to the math, as Methuselah would have still been alive as Noah was boarding the animals onto the ark. Sadly, (if not ironically) he dies the year the flooding begins. (No way to know if he refused to get on board or if the stress of just watching his grandson, finally did him in.) Just when you think youve heard them all, youll encounter a classica phrase oft repeated; never quite understood. You know, one of those things your grandpa uttered but could never tell you why. One of those phrases thatll get you a blank stare when spoken in front of your texting teenage niece. And todays yesteryear throwback is . . . All my eye and Betty Martin! (Best uttered with an Irish accent if you want the full effect.) Ok. Show of hands as to how many of you have heard this one? (Oh wait. Im writing a column. I cant see your hands.)

All my eye

Only the truly dedicated phraselovers may recall this expression more common amongst the British than Americans. But sadly, the story credited to the phrases origin offers precious little help as to why we still say it today. For starters, the expression means Nonsense! It was first recorded in a collection of phrases known as the Burford Papers, though the all my eye part is believed to have gone back much earlier. Folklore has it that a British sailor stopping by a church in Ireland, overheard what he assumed to be a prayer to St. Martin (patron saint of innkeepers and reformed drunks). Documented as Ah, mi hi, beate Martine, linguists debate this however, as mi hi would notve sounded like my eye but mee hee (which makes absolutely no sense at all). Whats more, seems theres no Latin prayer that comes close to this phrasing. Still, as is so often the case, funto-say phrases like this one often take on a life of their own. So next time someone tosses you a truly unbelievable bit of gossip, give it a whirl. Come back with Yeah, right. All my eye and Betty Martin too! and see what kind of reception you get.

Restoring a gem to original luster

BY MIKE FORD mford@delphosherald.com In the early 1900s an Indianapolis auto manufacturer, the Willys-Overland Motor Company, put the Hoosier State on the map. The original brand is no more but one of its gems is returning to its original luster and hometown of Van Wert thanks to that citys historical preservation group. The Van Wert Historical Society and Dave Agler have teamed up to restore a 1917 Overland Coupe. The 67-year-old retired a couple years ago and is excited about the project. Ive had almost 45 years in auto body; I owned my own shop here in town for 10 years. Thats all Ive ever done auto body and paint work. I retired a couple years ago, so this is just a fun project for me to do, he said. Agler explains the travels the car has made since the early 1900s and why its back home. This is a 1917 Overland 3 window, 3 seater coupe; its sometimes called an Opera Coupe. The car was owned by the Wassenberg family here in town back in the day around 1917 or 1918, he said. The car was in the garage when they turned the house into an art center back in the 50s. The car was bought by Bill Jones here in town from the family because they needed room in the garage to use as a viewing area for artwork. The car made its way to a warmer and more humid climate where termites eventually ate up most of the original woodwork. The car was in the Jones family and passed down to a brother and a son. The car went to Florida and was there for several years. The last owner was Richard Jones and he passed away a year or a year-anda-half ago. He was a friend of Dave Kirchenbauer here in town and they got a hold of Dave or he knew about the car and in an around about way, the car was going to be sold, so Dave thought it would be nice if the

historical society here in town could have the car, he said. This is when arrangements were made to return the antique home. So, the car was purchased by the historical society and brought back to Van Wert. People were gathered to rebuild it, so thats what Ive been doing for the past year, Agler said.

Agler noted the 1917 Overland being restored is in decent condition, considering its age. For being nearly 100 years old, its in pretty good shape, Agler said The coupe will be restored to its original condition from upholstery to woodwork and beyond. Parts dont exist, therefore, specifications must be drawn and custom-made.

The car was owned by the Charles Wassenberg family in Van Wert in 1917 or 1918. The car was in the garage when they turned the house into an art center back in the 50s.

This is a 1914 Overland Opera Coupe restored. The Van Wert Historial Society hopes to be as successful with their restoration.

During World War II, the WillysOverland Motor Company began producing jeeps for the military and introduced a civilian jeep line in 1945. Different types of jeeps were introduced through the years and the company re-branded itself as Kaiser-Jeep in 1963. In the early 1970s, it was taken over by the American Motors Corporation, which later became part of Chrysler Corporation. If you need parts, you have to make them. We had to have an oil pump and that was made by Schumakers. This car, right now to date, is one of three existing that we know of and the only 4-cylinder; the others are 6-cylinder, he said. Agler said restoring the engine, which is being done at Harts Machine Shop in Cecil, will cost approximately $5,000, with some parts having to be made since replacement parts can no longer be found. As much as $15,000 may be needed to restore the interior and top of the vehicle, which is currently of leather. Restorers are looking to keep all work local and several businesses have donated to the project in one way or another. Others working on the car, in addition to Agler and Kirchenbauer, include Mike Spray, Larry Oechsle and Bob Stanley, while NAPA Auto Parts has donated paint supplies for the project. Anyone wanting to pitch in can contact the Van Wert County Historical Society at 419-771-9851. The address is 602 N. Washington Street in Van Wert, Ohio 45891.

Egg Salad and Ecuador

a slice of cheese from its crinkly wrapper. But one night last fall when we were sinking into dreamland after watching Pretty Woman on TV for the umpteenth time, and they were just revving up for the evening (a phenomenon that produces many a confusing conversation), we received two phone calls. The first was from our freshman daughter who was struggling with a rare but real bout of homesickness. Mom, she said. Could you do me a big favor? Sure, I mumbled, trying to wipe the cobwebs of the dream I was having about Richard Gere from my hazy mind. What is it? Could you please make some egg salad for me? Now, anyone who knows me knows I am not, nor have I ever been, a good cook. Cooking has always felt like a chore to me, and even though I am creative in many areas, the kitchen is not one of them. But somehow, my daughter latched on to my version of egg salad that, apparently, represents home to her. I promised I would make some for her, talked a bit more and then hung up the phone. That was odd, I told my half-snoozing husband. Yes it was, he murmured. Your egg salad tastes like mush to me. Before I could elbow him hard enough to knock any images of Julia Roberts out of his dreams, the phone rang again. This time, it was our son, a sophomore. Mom, he said. Could you do me a big favor? Sure, I said, wondering how I was going to make another batch of mush/egg salad on such short notice. What is it?

My two kids are both in college, studying at the same ginormous university, in fact. Hubby and I look forward to the phone calls from our busy offspring, and we usually rush to the phone when their numbers appear on caller ID, much like our dog Sammy runs to the fridge whenever he hears someone pull

Would you please let me go to Ecuador? At that moment, I knew one thing for sure about myself: I prefer requests for egg salad from my children, thank you very much. Egg salad is bland, unexciting and ordinarily not dangerous at all. Ecuador is quite the opposite. Was I dreaming this call? Was this Richards idea of a joke? No. When I hung up, my son simply called back, thinking his cell phone dropped the call, and asked the same question. I jabbed my husband, this time making sure Julia was completely wrenched from his brain. Get on the other line! I told him. We calmly asked a million questions, looked up the cities in Ecuador where he would be staying, and checked out the mission group he would accompany. And then, several weeks later, despite our jangling nerves and the feeling that we really wanted to just grab his passport and run, we sent our son off to Ecuador. But not before I made him some egg salad. Mary Beth Weisenburger is a writer and a speaker and has sure learned a lot about Ecuador lately. sider when youre deciding where to spend your retirement years. Most large homes are multi-level, which can be challenging even unsafe to navigate if it becomes difficult for you to move around physically as you age. This isnt to say that a smaller home or assisted living facility will be the best option for you. If you wish to remain in your current residence as long as possible, in-home eldercare and hospice services are readily available. Whatever you choose, its your responsibility to weigh your options and the associated costs before you or your family are forced to make difficult decisions in the future. Retrofitting your home to make it easier to move about as you age can range from simply adding safety railings and bars, to more extensive remodeling including installing ramps and elevators. While you may initially cringe at such expenses, its important to consider the long-term savings that can accompany such improvements. Consider the case of a person who is no longer able to remain in his home and moves into an assisted living facility. The cost may range from $4,000-5,000 per month, or approximately $25,000 for a five to six month stay. A similar investment toward retrofitting your existing house may enable you to stay in your own home much longer. Its also important to remember that these kinds of home improvements often make

properties more attractive to potential buyers if you decide to sell your home. Does the area where you live meet your needs and retirement goals? You may also ask yourself if the area you live in will meet your needs later in life. Are you close to healthcare facilities? If you outlive your ability to drive are there grocery and convenience stores within walking distance or that offer delivery services? Likewise, as you think about the things you want to do during retirement, its important to consider if your metropolitan area is a good fit. For example, if you want to spend more time with family members that have moved away, you must account for travel expenses in your retirement plan. Still not sure you have all the information or resources you need to make these and other complex decisions about retirement? Work with a financial planner who can help you to prepare financially for retirement while considering your location, your lifestyle and other aspirations.

Small Plot Vegetable Gardening

Many people grow their own fruits and vegetables for fresh, quality produce. However, the traditional, large, backyard garden doesnt fit everyones lifestyle. Instead, some gardeners use intensive gardening techniques that help them get the most from their smaller plots. Container vegetable gardening is another option. Site Selection and Preparation Choose a site that receives at least six hours of sun each day. Vegetables grown in shady locations are usually less productive and of poor quality. If possible, turn the soil in the fall. If not, rototill, spade, or plow the area to a depth of 6 to 8 inches in early spring, or as soon as the soil can be worked. Do not turn soil when it is wet because it will remain hard and lumpy all season. Remove all clumps of sod, sticks, stones, and other debris, and level the area with a rake. Just before leveling the soil for the last time, spread a 10-10-10 or 6-10-4 evenly over the garden. Use 1 to 2 pounds per 100 sq. ft. (10 ft. x 10 ft.). For very small areas, use 3 to 4 teaspoons of fertilizer per square foot. Then rake be used to support pole beans or cucumbers. Just because space is limited, do not crowd the plants. Be sure to allow plenty of room for each plant to grow. By planning your garden on paper you will know how many plants and seeds to purchase. Mark out the garden area with stakes before you plant so you know where each crop will be planted or set up a raised bed. Space Saving Techniques Grow two or more vegetables in one area by planting long season and fast maturing or short season crops. The fast maturing vegetables will be harvested before the crops begin to crowd each other. Harvesting the short season crop also provides additional space for the later maturing vegetables. This growing technique can be accomplished by sowing the seeds of a fast and slow growing vegetable together in the same row. For example, radishes (fast maturing) and carrots (slow maturing) can be sown together. Another method is to alternate rows of fast and slow maturing vegetables. An example would be a row of leaf lettuce be-

the fertilizer into the soil. (If you wish to use green fertilizers or organic fertilizers, just send me an email and I will send you a list of materials and how to use them.) Planning Plan your garden on paper before planting. Determine the amount of space you have available, then decide what crops to grow. Consider incorporating some of these space-saving techniques. In small yards, fences can

tween two rows of tomatoes. As soon as one crop is finished, plant another. When cool-season crops, such as lettuce, spinach, radishes, and peas are harvested, replant with beans, beets, or turnips. Use vertical space such as a trellis or fence to support pole beans, cucumbers, and squash, and cage or stake tomatoes. All these stages and techniques of small plot vegetable gardening will give you a more productive garden and help your planting be more disease and pest resistant.

Eating fresh produce is only one benefit of gardening; exercise and the way working in a garden relaxes you and allows your brain to decompress are some of the others . So enjoy your endeavor and let me know how it turns out. If you would like more information on gardening or companion planting, (a technique that enhances plant growth in a smaller growing space), email me at sami@delphostrasingpost.com or samik@ wholehealthconnection.com

Samis Very Special Carrot Cake

2 cups flour cup dark brown sugar 1 cup white sugar 2 teaspoons baking soda 4 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon salt 4 large eggs 4 cups carrots shredded (the finer the better) 1 cups safflower or peanut oil 3 teaspoons of vanilla 1 cup of raisins 1 cup pecans or walnuts Mix all dry ingredients in one bowl. Make a hole in the center; add eggs and oil, mix well, then add vanilla. Next fold in carrots, then raisins, and last the nuts. Drop into a 13 by 9 baking dish or 2 9 cake pans that have been greased and floured. (I use butter) Bake 40 to 50 minutes bake at 350 degrees or until a toothpick comes out clean from the center of the cake. Cream Cheese Frosting 2 8 ounce cream cheese softened cup of butter = 1 stick of butter softened 4 cups or 16 ounces of confectioner sugar or a little more if necessary 1 teaspoon of vanilla This recipe is very special, I made it for my brothers, and I only make it for Easter and Christmas. It is very moist and all the flavors pop. You could use the frosting and still be happy. Start to finish 2 to 3 hours but it is worth it. Good luck and enjoy.
