THE TONAL UNDERGROUND

On the composers of Les Six and the music they
composed during the modern age in Europe and the US.
Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) left behind an impressive body
works, inspired by his love of popular traditions, the great Greek
myths, Judaic and ecumenical spirituality, and his impassioned
fight for freedom. A theorist of polytonal composition and
member of the celebrated Group of Six, Milhaud was one of
the founders of contemporary music. From the Provence of his
youth to California, where he sought refuge, the film follows his
life and work and draws on a wealth of rare archive material,
interspersed with vocal and instrumental performances
recorded especially for the occasion.

(1892-1974) left behind an impressive body
of nearly 450 works, inspired by his love of
popular traditions, the great Greek myths,
Judaic and ecumenical spirituality, and his
impassioned fight for freedom. A theorist
of polytonal composition and member
of the celebrated Group of Six, Milhaud
was one of the founders of contemporary
music. From the Provence of his youth to
California, where he sought refuge in 1940,
the film follows his life and work, through
the recollections of his wife and his own
remarks. The film draws on a wealth of rare
archive material, interspersed with vocal
and instrumental performances recorded

Larisa Schepitko was killed in a car accident
in 1979, she was only 41. The Ascent, her
last film and a stepping stone in Soviet
cinema, acts as a thematic and aesthetic
bridge to other great Soviet filmmakers
and films. Survival and sacrifice, the value
of life and ideology are some of the
subjects Schepitko tackles in her film, an
adaptation on WWII stories by Belorussian
writer Vasil Bykov. The breathtaking blackand-white cinematography was only one
of the reasons the film won the Berlinale
Golden Bear. The Ascent is a masterpiece
