I had trouble finding a clear number of Black members of Congress last February. So I went through the lists I could find and made a chart. I updated it after the November election as best as I could. I think that I've now gotten that last questions straightened out. There are now 39 Black Members of Congress plus two non-voting Black delegates. One Black seat was lost in the House and the only Black seat in the Senate was vacated after Obama was elected President.

Compiled Feb. 5, 2008 for What Do I Know? Updated Dec. 1, 2008. Total appears to be 40 out of 435 voting seats or 9%. Blacks are 12.9% of the US population. There are no Black US Senators.
