Chapter 1

Synopsis Introduced to Marcus and his mum and her exboyfriend Roger is described. Marcus mum tells Marcus they have split up and find out Marcus and his mum are vegetarians. Introduced to Will who is unemployed, is full of himself and does not like children. Will visits his friends John and Christine who have 2 children (Barney & Imogen) Will refuses to be Imogens godparent. Angie is introduced. Marcus was frightened about going to school. We found out Marcus sand out loud accidentally and everyone laughed at him. The teacher then used Marcus mishap to make herself feel better by allowing the children to pick on him. Will and Angie began dating, Angie was a single mother with two children. Will decided he preferred dating single mothers as he could get everything he wanted from the relationship without the guilt and Angie ended the relationship, again leaving him guilt free. Marcus came downstairs to find his Mum depressed and crying. Marcus tried to guess why she was crying. Introduced to Nicky & Mark, they played on games and left him out but he felt they were friends. All 3 got bullied so Nicky & Mark told Marcus they didnt want to be friends anymore. Marcus now had no friends and Nicky & Mark were also targets for the bullies since Marcus hung round with them. Will went to a SPAT meeting (single parents alone together) and pretended he was a single parent with a son in order to get women. At the meeting Will met a blonde woman who he liked called Suzie. Marcus spent the day with his Dad, his dads girlfriend and her mum who gave Marcus 5. Marcus went to his local newsagents where bullies from his school tried to frame him for shop lifting but the shop keeper knew he hadnt. Marcus found his mum crying again and she said he was going on a SPAT outing with her friend Suzie without his mum. Will went to the SPAT picnic with Marcus, Suzie and her daughter Megan. Will tried to get to know Marcus but noticed he wasnt like most teenagers. Will played with the other children before Marcus told them he had killed a duck. Marcus threw a sandwich at a ducks head and it died. When they got back to Marcus house they found Marcus mum had tried to commit suicide.

Fiona (Marcus mum) was rushed to hospital where she had her stomach pumped. Marcus had to stay the night with Suzie and Will went home. Marcus found his mums suicide note and his mum came home from hospital. They both watched Groundhog Day but the man tried to kill himself so they switched it off. But they put the film back on and watched the end. Will went through his daily routine and decided he wanted to help Marcus and Fiona. Will bought a car seat to keep up with the Ned (pretend son) story. Marcus decided he wanted Will and his mum to start dating so he would have someone if one of them died. They all went out for dinner. Will decided he was not romantically interested in Fiona. Will explained that Fiona had sung after dinner and then Marcus joined in before they made Will join in. Marcus came to visit Will and found out he didnt have a child. Marcus came to visit Will again, they talked and watched Countdown. Marcus looked around his flat. Marcus explained that he gets bullied at school and about singing in class. Marcus started to visit more frequently. They both talked about his mum and then watched Neighbours. Will and Marcus spoke about Marcus dad, Marcus was being bullied by teenage boys when Will let him in and scared the boys away. Will bought Marcus some trainers to stop him getting bullied. The bullied had then stolen Marcus shoes. Fiona found out that Will and Marcus saw each other after school. Fiona said Marcus was no longer allowed to see Will. Marcus told Fiona that he needs to see Will because he needs a father, she cried but allowed him to see Will. Will said he hates Christmas because he always heard the song his father had written (Santas Super Sleigh). Fiona called Will and asked to meet up to talk about Marcus. Will and Fiona met at a pub where Fiona argued with him because Will did not care about Marcus. Fiona told Marcus Will was no longer going to let him into his flat. Marcus went to the head teachers office to talk about his trainers being stolen. Marcus talked to Ellie in year 10 Marcus got mad at the head teacher. Marcus walked out of school. Will saw Marcus bunking off school but went

home. Marcus later came round Wills they talked about him skipping school and about Kurt Cobain. Will decided he should be a father figure to Marcus Marcus spoke to Ellie about Nirvana and they took the mick out of him. Marcus saw Ellie and her friend again and talked to them again, this time about relationships. Marcus ate lunch with Ellie and her friend Zoe and Ellie kissed him on the cheek. He was only invited so they could take the mick out of him with their friends. Will accepted the invitation from Marcus to go to their house for Christmas. Marcus mum and dad, his dads girlfriend and her mum were also at the Christmas dinner at Marcus house. They all opened their presents and Will noticed that Marcus was a nice boy. Marcus dad smoked drugs in front of everyone and they began to argue. Suzie arrived which was the first time Will and Suzie had seen each other since she found out about Ned not being real. Will and Suzie argued and Will was about to leave when Marcus told Will not too. Marcus family found out about the dead duck day which made everybody laugh, Will sat back down. Will decided he was falling in love with a girl called Rachel who he met at a new years eve party. Will found out she had a son and she assumed Marcus was his son. Will arranged for Rachels son and Marcus to meet up. Marcus and Ellie were both at Suzies new years eve party. Ellie put some sherry in Marcus coke (he knew). Marcus and Ellie talked about his mum, and about suicide and other single parents. Marcus and Ellie saw her mum kissing another man outside it didnt bother Ellie but it bothered Marcus. Will asked Marcus to pretend to be his son. Will took Marcus to the arcades. They talked about girlfriends and later Marcus was trying to tell Will about himself in case Rachel asked. Will thought Rachel didnt love him. Ali (Rachels son) and Marcus were complete opposites. Marcus walked out. Ali said that if Will went out with Rachel he was going to kill Marcus. Will found Marcus and told him to come back to Rachels, he also said Ali was crying. Ali apologized to Marcus. Lee Hartley stole Marcus glasses but Ellie punched him in the face. Will told Rachel he wasnt Marcus dad. Rachel

said she thought Will was a blank guy but then she thought he was a better person. Rachel then said he was the nicer person as the relationship between Will and Marcus was there he just wasnt his biological father. Fiona had begun crying at breakfast again. Marcus told Will about the crying, Marcus realized he may have to do something about it and asked Will to talk to her, but Will said he didnt want too. Ellie and Will argued as Kurt Cobain tried to kill himself but Marcus thought about his mum in that position, he walked out again. Ellie came to find him and she said she doesnt know what to say to make him feel better. He started to cry and Ellie put her arm around him till he felt better. Will realized he should do something about Fiona. Will went to see Rachel and they slept together. They had a conversation about the point of life at her kitchen table. Rachel said she thought about suicide before but could never go through with it. Rachel was a positive person. Rachel offered to talk to Fiona. Will said he couldnt ever remember feeling so happy. Marcus dad had fallen off a window ledge and he wanted to see Marcus. Marcus told his Mum he didnt want to see his dad. Ellie said she would go with him to see his dad. Marcus then said he would to see him and would pay for Ellies train fare. Marcus didnt tell his mum Ellie was coming. Marcus saw on the newspaper that Kurt Cobain had killed himself. Ellie said she trusted Marcus and he made her close her eyes so she couldnt see the newspapers on the way to the train. Ellie said she was going to get drunk. Will and Fiona waited in a pub for Rachel, Rachel had tricked him so he and Fiona would talk and she had never planned to turn up. Will tried to talk to Fiona and she started to cry again. Will took her to Pizza Express and said he didnt think he could help, they then began talking. Will found out that Kurt Cobain had shot himself in the head and died. Will wanted to know that Marcus was okay but found out he was at a police station. Marcus realised he wanted Ellie to be his friend but not his girlfriend. Ellie said she didnt like the world because it was full of sexism, racism and is full of injustice. Ellie said sometimes she feels like killing herself, Marcus said she feels nothing like his mum and doesnt actually want to die

and they both got off the train. Ellie saw a cut out of Kurt Cobain and smashed the shop window; she pulled the cut out with her and sat with it. Ellie and Marcus were arrested, Marcus said it was his mums fault as without her he would never have met Ellie and got in trouble. Ellie told the police woman that Marcus didnt do anything. They phoned both of their parents. Marcus dad and his girlfriend Lindsey were the first to arrive; Marcus had a go at his dad while they waited for Ellies mum, Fiona and Will to arrive at the police station. Will rang Rachel who said she was never going to turn up and told her about Ellie & Marcus. Will picked Ellies mum up and drove her and Fiona to the police station. Katrina (Ellies mum) said Ellie was mad, she said she wanted Ellie to be feisty and rebellious but now she was it was killing her. They stopped for petrol and snacks, when back in the car they talked about Kurt Cobain killing himself. When they arrived at the police station they found out they had to wait for the shop owner to arrive. Ellie and the shop owner were both very large Kurt Cobain fans. They hugged each other, Fiona asked the police woman to let Marcus off even though he hadnt done anything anyway. Marcus told his mum she was mad. They were both released and all went for burgers. Katrina and Will wondered why they were single and about Rachel. Clive (Marcus dad) took drugs in front of Marcus, when he went back to Cambridge. Marcus told him his dad didnt need him. Marcus said he wouldnt mind if Clive and Lindsey had a baby. Will was frightened because of how much he wanted Rachel. He began to take Ali and Will out every Saturday. Marcus dressed better and had his hair cut, he became better friends with Ellie and Zoe and had become a real teenager, and Will had grown up. Fiona felt as though she was losing Marcus and she thought he had been smoking. She also didnt feel depressed. Marcus said he hated Joni Mitchell and didnt want to sing. Will knew he would be okay.
