Reigning top Dog MAscot, JAx

About JAx:

Congratulations to Jax, the new Top Dog Mascot of the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission! Jax and his owner, Allen Hall, received a fantastic prize package including a free annual Gold Pass, a personal photo shoot for Jax, and official mascot gear! Jax was officially introduced at Pet Fest in April, and will make mascot appearances at upcoming pet-related events including Dog Day Afternoon and Yappy Hour. Jax, a rescued chocolate lab, has an amazing survival story that many members of the Lowcountry community are familiar with. Last summer, Jax was injured severely after being hit by a car and left for dead on Johns Island. After an intense seven-hour surgery (donated by Dr. Merrill Irvin of West Ashley Veterinary Clinic) and a long search for his owner, sweet and gentle Jax was put up for adoption by the Charleston Animal Society. He was eventually adopted by new owners and underwent intense physical therapy to be able to walk on his shattered leg and hip again. By this past winter, Jax had recovered enough to visit James Island County Park with his new owners to play and socialize, and Charleston County Parks was proud to host his first dog park visit. The 2012 CCPRC Top Dog Mascot contest was very competitive, with over 80 entries received. Applications were accepted online during the month of January, and the applicants were narrowed down to 12 finalists. Finalists were interviewed at Dolittles pet store in February. Jax and the Top Dog runner-up, an English bulldog named Winston, were selected in March. Dogs were judged based on friendliness, personality, temperament, obedience and many more factors. Help us welcome Jax to the CCPRC family!

Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac are all present in South Carolina. In the case of Poison Ivy and Oak, the old saying leaflets of three, let it be is good advice as they are easily identified by their three leaves. Poison Sumac however is harder to identify as it resembles other sumacs as a shrub like plant. Also remember that the oils on the leaves can stay active up to one year on clothing, equipment, pets, and other surfaces, causing possible irritation if people come in contact with the oils. A best practice would be to wash all items immediately after they have been in areas likely to contain any of these plants.
