TIPPING GUIDELINES: Please bear in mind that these are only guidelines.

You may well find that there will be discrepancies with our suggestions and what you are told over there. Of course there are many opinions and desires to satisfy! However we feel that our guidelines are fair. 1) Tipping is mostly appreciated in US$ cash. Travelers checks are hard if not impossible for guides to cash. 2) We suggest that you bring US$20, $10, $5, and $1 in cash for tips and miscellaneous charges. 3) It is VERY useful to carry about $25.00-$50.00 in US1.00 bills for tipping hotel staff etc. 4) Please keep in mind that the expected tips are smaller than here in the United States. CITY HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS - 10% for meals in a restaurant - $1.00 of local equivalent for small services such as carrying bags at the hotel, room serv ice, etc. - $1.00 of local equivalent per day for maid service at hotels in the major centers. AIRPORT AND ROAD TRANSFERS We suggest about $5.00-$10.00 for a shorter, private airport transfer and about $10.00 -$15.00 for a longer road transfer. Often these transfer drivers are a wealth of information! PRIVATE TOURING We suggest about $30.00-$40.00 total for your guide for a full day. SAFARI GUIDES AND CAMP STAFF If you are happy with your guides, drivers, camp and hotel staff and they have done a good job, we recommend the following guidelines. As a rough guideline, budget in $10.00 -$20.00 per person/per day that you are actually on safari. a) Private Lodge and Mobile Tented Safaris: (Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda) This is where you are traveling as an independent party and have the services of your own private guide and vehicle on the entire or portion of your safari. 1) Guide:- $10.00 - $20.00 per person per day ($20.00-$40.00 per couple/per day). Usually a standard tip is a total of $40.00 for each guide per day); a party of four or more may wish to tip a bit higher. Of course you may tip more if you feel that he has endeavored to do his best when game viewing and generally giving you a great time! 2) Private Mobile Tented Camp Staff: - $5.00 - $10.00 per person per day ($10.00-$20.00) per couple/per day) which will be divided between all the mobile -tented camp staff members. A party of four or more may wish to tip a bit higher. You can give the total amount to the camp manager who will put it into a box to be divided up among the staff at the end of your stay. b) Flying Safaris: (Kenya and Tanzania) This is where you fly independently or part of a small group from park to park and have the resident guides at each camp/lodge take you out on safari activities. 1) Resident Camp Guide:- $10.00 per person/per day for your resident guide/driver at each camp. We suggest that you tip the guide or guides at the end of your stay. Your guides may vary as you may have the same guide for all your game activities or a different guide for each separate game activity i.e. walking guide, game drive guide or boat activity (driver or poler). 2) Lodge and Camp Staff:- $5.00 - $10.00 per person/per day for all your general camp staff. You can give the total amount to a staff tip box or to the camp manager who will divide it up among the staff at the end of your stay. In the larger safari lodges you may wish to individually tip your waiter at the end of your stay. c) Group Departure Safaris: (Kenya and Tanzania) This is where you are part of scheduled group departure (6-10) traveling with the same people and guide. You have one or 2 guides/hostesses for the duration of the safari. Usually everyone in the group will put their tips together as one sum for their guide and camp staff. 1) Guide:- $5.00 per person/per day for your guide (a rough guideline) . Again this depends if you are on a first class or participation type of trip. Use your own discretion along with the rest of the group. 2) Lodge and Camp Staff:- $3.00 - $5.00 per person/per day for your entire mobile tented camp staff or your permanent tented/lodge staff. You can give the total amount to your guide who will pass it along to be divided among the staff.

TIPPING IN AFRICA We suggest counting out all of your tips before departing the country. A great way to do this is to go through your itinerary day by day and work out each guide/s and staff/s tips. Then label individual envelopes for the appropriate tips. At each and every lodge and/or camp you stay at, you should have one envelope for all the staff as a communal tip which you give the manager and another separate envelope for the guide/s. (Some Southern Africa camps do allow you to put the communal camp staff tip on credit cards.) Once you have counted out the money and put it aside, it is easier to figure how much to bring. You will be able to settle all incidental charges you incur from the larger lodges (bar bill, laundry, gift shops, etc) to a credit card at check out. The smaller camps and lodges may only take cash or maybe Traveler checks. When buying from the various road side stands (and you definitely want to stop at one or two to look at the items) you will want to plan on using either small US$ bills or local currency. Quick Reference Guide **ALL TIPS ARE NOTED AS PER PERSON/PER DAY Camp Guide(fly safari) and City Tour Guides: $10 - $20 Camp, Hotel Staff 1 tip for all as a whole: $1-$3 (hotel staff) and $5 (camp staff) Transfer (depends on length of transfer): $5 - $15 Dining - on your own account: 10% Bag service: $1 per bag MOUNT KENYA GUIDED HIKE 1 climber $60 - $90 (per climber per day) 2 climbers $50 - $70 (per climber per day) 3 6 climbers $35 - $55 (per climber per day) 7 12 climbers $30 - $45 (per climber per day) It is best to collect the tipping money from all members of the group into a pot and then one or two members of your group act as spokespeople and distribute the tips. It is fairest to tip each staff member individually. Before your climb, during the briefing you will be given a sheet detailing the names of the guides and cook, and the number of other members of staff. This sheet will also give a guideline of how to divide the pot to give an appropriate tip to each member of staff. Please remember that these figures are a guideline intended to assist you in making a choice. You should not feel obliged in any way to tip, or be pressured by any member of staff to do so. It is perfectly acceptable to give more or less than these figures.
