EDITORS DESK

On Our Unplanned Hiatus...

here has been a lot going on since our last issue of SNC Quarter Notes, not only in the world of a cappella and Straight No Chaser, but also with each member of the SNCQN editorial team. We have all been so busy with our own personal pursuits that coming up with these fifty pages of material for this magazine became more like a burden, rather than a fun project. And when a family emergency popped up in my life, there was no way the winter issue was going to come out in time. This series of events has led me to consider making a few major changes with SNC Quarter Notes. As many of you know, the magazine was initially conceived as a fan-driven online publication, in which the majority of articles would be written by fans of Straight No Chaser and of the a cappella genre. The editorial team was created for the express purpose of streamlining the submission and publication of articles to be featured in the magazine, and these editors would have the option to submit articles as well, if they wanted to. In short, the magazine was supposed to facilitate dialogue amongst fans; however, this has not been the case so far, as most of the articles have been written by the SNC Quarter Notes editorial team. Now, about these changes. Since the majority of articles are written by the staff of eleven people here at SNC Quarter Notes, we have decided to drastically cut down on the amount of material included in each issue. We want to keep bringing you quality material and not something that was haphazardly put together minutes before the publication is 4 SNC QUARTER NOTES

put out. We cant say how much we plan to cut down on the material, but we will be doing this for our next issue and for future issues. The second change will hopefully help us get closer to the original purpose of SNC Quarter Notes. We are now looking to hire (term used loosely, since we cant exactly pay anyone) staff writers who will contribute an article or regular column each issue. We want to encourage anyone who has a desire to get involved with SNC Quarter Notes and become a part of the SNCQN team to let us know, through our Facebook and Twitter pages or by sending us an email at sncquarternotes@gmail.com. You can also fill out a form found Several Chasers have at tinyurl.com/SNCQNhelpwanted. already contacted us, and we hope to hear from more of you! On behalf of the SNC Quarter Notes editors, I would like to thank you all for your patience as we sort through the various problems that pop up and as we continue to find our editorial voice as a new online publication. We hope you enjoy this issue and our future issues!

SNC QUARTER NOTES

WINTER 2011/SPRING 2012

#SaveTheSingOff
BY SHAINA ENG

ts no secret that I enjoy a cappella music. A large majority of my music library is comprised of acatunes, and it has come to the point where I not only enjoyed the a cappella covers more than the original tunes, but that I came to learn about new music through the a cappella cover versions first. I arranged a few a cappella pieces in high school for my choir and Im a member of an a cappella group at the University of Southern California. Simply put, I love vocal music.

Although I learned about a lot of a cappe l l a gro ups t hr o ugh t he grapevine, either online or through my fellow aca-fans, some of my alltime favorite groups first came together to compete on a little show called The Sing-Off. Groups like Pentatonix, Street Corner Symphony, the Backbeats, Delilah, Kinfolk 9, and Urban Method (along with many others) had their debut on the Sing-Off stage, and I learned of still more groups because they were featured on the show. Truth be told, even though

Straight No Chaser opened the gates to my aca-appreciation, The Sing-Off turned my appreciation into passion. So naturally, when I heard that NBC wasnt bringing the show back this fall, I didnt know what to think. I spent the last two summers at tapings, so my first thought was, What am I supposed to do this summer NOW? But before I could really get my thoughts together, a widespread campaign began in the a cappella community and beyond to try and save the show, and I quickly jumped

SNCQUARTERNOTES.BLOGSPOT.COMDudley9 Image Courtesy of Andy

#SaveTheSingOff

on board. I signed the petition, I tweeted #SaveTheSingOff, I followed @SaveTheSingOff on Twitter, and I liked the Facebook page. Its been over two weeks since NBCs announcement; the petition has over 20,000 signatures, the three judges (Shawn Stockman, Sara Bareilles, and Ben Folds) AND host Nick Lachey have tweeted many times to encourage fans to #SaveTheSingOff, and many different a cappella groups, including last seasons winner, Pentatonix, have

posted videos encouraging fans to sign the petition and get involved. While I had read from multiple news sources that the show was cancelled, Jenny Penny of TVGrrrrl (self-professed TV addict and blogger) avoided the term cancelled, instead saying, The show will sadly not run the full season this fall on NBC. Whether or not NBC will pick it up for a short December run in 2012 is still a big question mark. Its becoming increasingly unlikely that it will return for a brief holiday run, and it was just announced that NBC has

picked up a new singing competition called The Winner Is, which, sadly, does not feature a cappella music. But why is NBC thinking of cancelling the show? Well, Jenny Penny put it really well in her blog post entitled Nielsen ratings signal doom for Sing Off as fans rally to save Season 4, and anything I have to add is superfluous, so check it out at In a TVGrrrrl (bit.ly/K67xX4). nutshell, the Nielsen ratings showed that, for this past season, The Sing-Off had a relatively low viewership and would regularly fall behind all other

10 SNC QUARTER NOTES

WINTER 2011/SPRING 2012

networks except for the CW. But thats because it was pitted against popular, top-ranked shows like Dancing With the Stars, House, How I Met Your Mother, and Two and a Half Men. It seems that the best bet for the show right now is to try and find it another home on a different network. Even as news of the shows fate has spread, a Chinese version of The SingOff is currently in production. This is the third time that The Sing-Off has gone international, following versions of the show in Holland and France. I

dont know much about how the behind-the-scenes stuff works in television, but thats got to be a good sign, right? Well, whether you want to see The Sing-Off on another network or on NBC as a post-season series, be sure to get involved so that we can see more of the show! How, you ask? First and foremost, be sure to sign the petition. You can also like the Save The Sing-Off Facebook page and follow Save The Sing-Off on Twitter. You can also help by using

the hashtag #SaveTheSingOff when youre talking about the show on Twitter. For links and more info, please visit SaveTheSingOff.com.

UnPractice Makes Perfect

BY SARAH TWILLEY rom the first moment we heard their harmony on The Sing-Off, Street Corner Symphony has captivated our ears, keeping us hanging on for more. It's obvious that their practice of unpracticing served them well on the show and seems to be the key to their laid-back style. Their debut album continues their tradition of unpracticing, delivering ten solid tracks with the same classic Street Corner Symphony style. 12 SNC QUARTER NOTES

What I love most about this album is that it has a healthy mix of simply awesome covers and amazing originals. It really shows the depth and talent of this group. I also love that we get to hear the depth of the group in the doling out of solos on the album. On The Sing-Off, Jeremy Lister was the predominant soloist (not sure if that was their choice or the choice of the powers-that-be on the show). No worries, Jeremy fans, he still shines in his

solos on the album, but we also get to hear each of the other guys featured. The familiar strains of Hey Soul Sister not only brilliantly open the album, but remind us who it is we fell in love with. This Train track (see what I did there?!) is one of their many fabulous songs from their time on The Sing-Off. They change up the accompaniment on the second verse, keeping the song fresh. And their breakdown on the bridge has always been my

favorite part of the song. The guys debut four original tracks on this album, each earning a quick mention. Holding On is written by Richie Lister, who sings the lead on the catchy melody. The layers behind him keep the song bouncing along. And the falling Holdin'... is a great attention grabber at the beginning. Next is what I think is my favorite of the originals, Plain Jane, written by Jeremy Lister. From the moment you hear the whi stl e at the

WINTER 2011/SPRING 2012

beginning, you know you're in for a fun ride. I almost expect to hear it in mono, with white noise from a record player; its kinda folksy fun with a sweet message in the lyrics. The Mark McLemore original, Most Of It, has got to be the quirkiest track on the album... and I love it. It's kind of off the wall, out of left field. Mark's lead is kind of just there, and in this song that's all it needs. He's singing all of these seemingly silly things completely straight. It's perfection. I've gotta admit I thought for a second that Jon McLemore's World To Me was gonna be a mashup of an original with Lean On Me and I love that they added that at the beginning. It definitely made me sit up and take notice. I was attached through the rest of the piece this is a very sweet song. Mad World certainly captures the haunting feel of the Gary Jules cover from the first chord. I did find that, at times, I was more focused on what the background was doing instead of listening to John Martin's beautiful lead. The album closer, Iron & Wine's Dead Man's Will, is the perfect ending track for these guys and this album. We get to hear bass Adam

Chance take a rare lead, bringing an ethereal and smoky quality to the trackthe simplicity and mellow feel cap off a fun musical ride. I think that the most important thing to note about this album has nothing to do with the tracks, the voices, or the arrangement choices. It has to do with the six guys that make up Street Corner Symphony, their passion for music, and their recognition of their fans. In the album liner notes, the guys talk about how they attribute their success to the fans, who they prefer to call friends. They state that their music is worthless without an appreciative listening audience. This is what brings me back to this album over and over again the spirit in which it was made has made it even sweeter to my ears. I definitely look forward to their next offering! (While finishing this r e vi e w , I r e c e i ve d information from the excellent gentlemen of Street Corner Symphony regarding their next album. In June 2012, they are hitting the studio with the great Deke Sharon and a cappella recording icon Bill Hare to make their next album. Can't wait to hear it, fellas!)

#SaveTheSingOff

The Backbeats
BY SARAH TWILLEY

hen The Backbeats took the stage for Season 2 of The SingOff, we all expected it to be great. I mean, a few of the members had already competed in the first season of the show and these singers had been handpicked to make an a cappella supergroup. They didn't disappoint. They placed third in a very tight and talented

competition. And now, they have released an album that serves as a reminder of all of the reasons that we loved them! Arrangers Kenton Chen and Ben Bram have brought us twelve recent hits with their own Backbeats spin on them. For those who fell in love with the group on The Sing-Off, there are two

stellar tracks specifically for you; full versions of Katy Perry's Firework and Beyonc's If I Were A Boy, both from the group's tenure on the show, still give chills. Firework soloists Kenton Chen and Joanna Jones handle the piece as a beautiful duet, while Jones's voice transcends the Beyonc tune with emotion and power that

she pours into the lead. One of my favorite things to do with a cappella tracks is to play them right after their original recordings and compare. I certainly did this with this album after listening to it straight through a few times. Each of these tracks stands up to the original. And in some cases (Cry Me A River, Who You Are,

14 SNC QUARTER NOTES

WINTER 2011/SPRING 2012

Firework, Thinking 'Bout Somethin'), the songs surpass the originals. Before I highlight any specific moments, I need to pause to give major kudos to vocal percussionist Courtney Jensen and bass Todd G. Levin. They are so good at what they do that I fre que ntly wonder if I am hearing a percussion track and bass guitar. My favorite track on the album surprised me. Thinking 'Bout Somethin' really is the perfect opening track. But the surprise for me is that it's a Hanson tune. I am not a Hanson fan and I LOVE this track. Then, they take this Hanson tune and make it sound a bit Motown it had me thinking of Sam and Dave's Gimme Some Loving with the horns. Tenor Jordan Pharoah cements the soul feel with his lead. A few tracks later, the haunting execution of the recognizable piano intro on Adele's hit song Turning Tables grabbed my attention. Joanna Jones lends her soul to the lead. The whole arrangement wins simply because of the bridge: they punctuated the very emotional

passage by letting the accompaniment drop out and supporting Joanna on the lyrics, leaving silence between the words. A very effective twist! Their cover of Justin Timberlake's Cry Me A River is much more than just that as they cleverly mash in a bit of Ella Fitzgerald's Cry Me A River. The arrangement alone is worth a listen, but I can't neglect to mention the stellar leads by Eitan Nir & Kenton Chen. The album ends with a special guest appearance by Sara Bareilles as The Backbeats back her up on one of her recent hits, Uncharted. The fun arrangement really sends the album out with an extra boost. The bottom line is this: if you are a fan of a cappella, you are going to want to buy this album. If you are a fan of pop music, you are going to want to buy this album. And if you are trying to get your pop-loving friends into a cappella, this is a great album to have them listen to.

Sarahs A Cappella Voice Crush Of the Quarter

BY SARAH TWILLEY

I LOVE GREAT VOICES. Listening to a cappella, I come across a ton of great voices. But every so often, a voice hits me
deeply. I have to hear it again and again. And again. I start searching YouTube and other various Internet sources to get more of that voice. And that, dear readers, is what makes a voice crush.

Winter 2011/Spring 2012: AARON SPERBER Group: UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER YELLOWJACKETS

THIS PAST SEASON of The Sing-Off offered us many gorgeous voices to swoon over. This month's column could have easily been about Moi Navarro, Christie Dashiell, Michael OdokaraOkigbo, Scott Hoying, or Keith Evans. However, Aaron Sperber quickly rose to the top of my list of favorites. Aaron's voice was always easy for me to pick out. I simply knew when he was singing without having to look. I love good solo voices like that! The fact that Aaron is a voice major at the Eastman

School of Music (#1 ranked US music school, people... A big deal) has no influence whatsoever (says the voice major, hah). I promise. I remember the first time I heard Aaron it was at the taping of the third episode of the season. Aaron was one of the featured soloists on the opening number, Keane's Somewhere Only We Know. His voice started in on so tell me when you're gonna let me in... and it was so pure, even in the higher ends of his register. I still get goosebumps thinking about

that moment! A few weeks later, he channeled Billy Joel during their Superstar Medley (another performance of theirs that I got to see live). I especially enjoyed when he took the lead on the last half of She's Always A Woman definitely a swoonworthy performance! I will admit that there is one more reason Aaron was picked as my voice crush this time. He has a passion for music education and making sure that music programs are continued. As music director, Aaron has

gotten the Yellowjackets involved in working with local schools to get kids more interested in music especially performing music. Knowing this about sweet Aaron makes his voice sound infinitely sweeter!! You can follow Aaron on Twitter: @AaronSperber. I can't wait to see what Aaron continues to bring us in this next year with the YJs and beyond!

Have your own aca voice crush? I would love to hear about them on Facebook (www.facebook.com/acavoicecrush) and on Twitter (@acavoicecrush)!

Fun Facts: The Sing-Off Edition

BY ANNIE LADUCA 1. The Sing-Off premiered on December 14, 2009. It was the first of its kinda musical competition focused on a cappella music. The Season One finale, which aired live on December 21, 2009, had a Nielsen rating of 7.3 million viewers. To date, there have been twenty-one episodes produced over the three seasons, including a Christmas special, A Sing-Off Christmas. Season One contestants, the Whiffenpoofs of Yale, or the "Whiffs", were founded in 1909 and are the world's oldest collegiate a cappella group. The group is comprised of all seniors. Season Three judge, Sara Bareilles, performed with the Backbeats on the Season Two finale. She was in an a 4. cappella group at UCLA (Awaken a Cappella); while she was in the group, her song Gravity was included on the Best of College a Cappella 2004 compilation CD. Season One winners, Nota, grew up in Puerto Rico, with Spanish as their first language. Following their win on The Sing-Off, Nota was the opening act on Shakiras fall 2011 tour. Season Two winners, Committed, released their self-titled debut album on August 29, 2011. It includes covers of songs by Michael Jackson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Al Green, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. Season Three winners, Pentatonix, released a new video of their cover of Beyonces End of Time on YouTube on May 28, 2012. You can find it here: Afro-Blue, Dartmouth Aires, and Urban Method. 100 percent of net proceeds goes to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Watch the video here:

youtu.be/8hzpLbdhTrI
The Sing-Off has included 13 active collegiate a cappella groups over the three seasons. 9. A Chasers Guide to One of the Most Popular Chaserisms

EDITED AND COMPILED BY SHAINA ENG
Throughout SNC land, the term beep is used in everyday conversations both by members of Straight No Chaser and their fans. But for some Chasers, the term may be the source of some confusion. Various members of Straight No Chaser attempted, throughout March 2011, to explain the origins of the term, its different derivatives, and how to correctly use it. I have taken explanations from Twitter and the SNCmusic.com blogs, edited them, and compiled it all here in this handy guide. Also included are examples cited by the authors of the original explanations in the original verbiage with only slight adjustments. I hope you find these explanations useful, and that it helps you beep others with confidence! SKE

Chasers: The term beep is getting used improperly with regularity. I do not claim to be the originator by no means, but I am here to help. Actual definition: Tooting your own horn. Hence, beep (the sound of you hitting the horn). Honk is the same thing, used for variety. Example: Just met Madonna, she told me she loves my arrangements. This is actually a double BEEP. Saying I met Madonna alone is a honk. Example two: Flying to London to sing with Barry. Again, a double beep. Last part is even worse as I refer to Manilow by his first name casually. Mis-use (example provided by Dottie Kovacs): So you cant say beep to someone else to tell them good job? No. Beep is used more to point out ones gloating. Example three (from Angie Woollard): Does there exist a triple beep? Flying to London to sing with Barry at the O2? Absolutely correct. Using beep can be used to call out someone elses gloating as well. That is the main purpose/use. Example (from Shaina Eng): Just had an amazing nap. BEEP. Sometimes the most minor ones are the funniest to call out. Example two (from Shaina Eng): I just bought corn nuts. BEEP! Beeps are not always bad. Its more to tease someone, and usually for obvious boasting, not just small everyday things. Self-dep Beep is when you put yourself down in a boasting matter (self-deprecating). Example (from Shaina Eng): Having dinner at Joey's for some AMAZING barbeque the night before getting my wisdom teeth pulled. BEEP. The clause before getting my wisdom teeth pulled is self-deprecating. Example two (from Kim Davis): I get to go sell filters for forty hours this week!! Another example of a self-dep Beep.

Greep is a term coined by co-author Charlie Mechling, and he often uses it to deride co-author Ryan Ahlwardt. The official definition of greep is as follows: A typically trivia-related beep from Green (Ryans nickname). Example: There are so many great tunes on Hard Days Night. Tough to decide which ones my favorite Nerd alert: the key change (right before the guitar solo) and Picardy third (on the final chord) of And I Love Her make it my favorite tune. Greep. The fact that Ryan was the one to explain this to Chasers on Twitter made Charlie very glad that day; according to Charlie, its like his punishment. Ryan is only allowed three greeps per day. More than three greeps in one day results in an undisclosed monetary settlement.

THE BEEP LINGO EXPLAINED

day at the mall while I was out shopping for some new shoes. He/she/they looked amazing." The Vacation Drop. A cousin of the The Name Drop, in which the beeper subtly or overtly references a destination other than the setting in which the conversation takes place to enhance the impact of their statement upon the beepee. Ex: "Mexico was great for the honeymoon, but we're looking into the Dominican with our travel agent for this year." (Author's note: not everyone who visits the Dominican Republic deserves to be beeped, but those who possess ownership over travel agents in conversation should be, including this author who has made the above statement nearly verbatim.) The Self-Dep Beep (short for self-deprecating), in which the beeper brings attention to a particular plight he/she/they is/ has/will enduring/endured/endure. Ex: "That reminds me, last summer when I was traveling abroad I sprained my ankle on the way to the top of the Parthenon and had to have Brad carry me all the way back to the Four Seasons." (Author's note: this particular example includes indeed three beeps; the self-dep example of the sprained ankle, the vacation-drop reference to visiting ancient Greek historical sites, and general beep for the need to point out the name of the luxury hotel at which the beeper resided.) Note from Charlie Mechling: Addendum to the Self-Dep Beep Example: This may, in fact, be a quadruple beep, if the Brad in question is Paisley or Pitt. (First Name Drop.) The Greep. Coined by Charlie (date unknown), a greep can be called by the beepee when the beeper - almost always this author, whose nickname inspired the wombo (word combo) of Green+beep=greep - mercilessly unleashes some completely unsolicited nugget of trivia upon the helpless beepee(s). A greep can be called by saying "Greep" usually in a monotone manner, nearly always not looking up from the game of Angry Birds or Mad Skillz Motocross being played on a phone while waiting in a regional

Greetings, Chasers There seems to be some recent activity on here (and Twitter, Facebook) surrounding the unofficial lingo of SNC, specifically the term "beep" and its derivatives. I feel it is my duty - nay, honor - to set the record straight on behalf of the group to avoid any future confusion and, more importantly, to ensure the integrity of the term and its propagation. The term "beep" was coined circa 2002 in Bloomington, IN. Most academic scholars place the origin of the term to the off-campus residence inhabited by Mike "Sluggz" Luginbill and several of his fraternity brothers. The term was invented as a protest of sorts to bring public notice and/or mere personal enjoyment to a statement - written, verbal, or otherwise - made by an individual or group of individuals intending to bring attention to oneself or themselves. While there may be debate surrounding the exact timing of the term's origin, no one debates the fact that it was indeed Sluggz that brought it into SNC's vernacular (albeit inadvertently perhaps...). Immediately following its collegiate inception, a bevy of related terms soon spawned from "beep." To eliminate discrepancies in the proper usage of "beep," please allow me to explain several of the most commonly utilized derivatives. The Name Drop. We've all been guilty of this at some point. The guilty party (the beeper) includes a casual reference to a person or group of individuals in an attempt to strengthen the impact of their statement upon the receiving party (the beepee). As Walt pointed out in a recent tweet, to refer to this party by his/her/their first name(s) increases the need for the beepee to beep the beeper. Ex: "OMG, I ran into (name of semi-famous athlete, actor, notable public figure, middle Jonas brother, etc.) the other

Canadian TV station's green room at 7:30 AM - or, as Jerome has recently coined, shaping the letter G with one's pointer finger and thumb while employing the Seggieface. I will not elaborate on the Seggieface, just know that it's awesome. Ex: "The key change right before the guitar solo and the Picardy third on the final chord make 'And I Love Her' my favorite Beatles tune off of 'A Hard Day's Night.'" - recent tweet posted by this author on 3/13/11 (Author's note: the author's usage of his own tweet to show the implementation of a greep may, admittedly, in fact be a self-dep beep...) The Honk. A honk is larger than a beep in nature and tends to be called out by the beepee by miming the pulling down of a train whistle, the playing of a small horn instrument such as a piccolo trumpet, or this author's favorite, the falling asleep at the wheel of a car with the beepee's head resting firmly upon the horn. Usually, when one is "honking," they are beeping out of control, a state in which many refer to as a "beep-fest." Ex: "So I was at the Lakers game (general/vacation) and I saw Jack Nicholson (name-drop) get up and say something to the ref and I was all like, Yo, Jack (first name drop), it's me from the coffee shop earlier! and he obviously 24 SNC QUARTER NOTES

remembered me because he invited me down to the court (general) but my girl spilled her drink on me (selfdep) when we stood up and I was like Awww, I know you didn't just spill your drink on me right as I'm about to go sit with Jack (first name drop) and pitch him my movie script (general) about the hardships endured by the common Union soldier under the command of General George McClellan at the Battle of Antietam (Greep)." As one can see, whereas the petty offense of beeping often goes unnoticed by the beeper, the graceful and admittedly stupid art of calling out beeps is one that requires years of study and implementation by the beepee. It should be noted that administering beeps is not intended to be malicious; rather, distributing beeps to guilty beepers should be practiced in a light-hearted and jovial manner. If the beeper takes offense to being called out on their honkage, they should probably stop beeping. Thank you for stopping by, everyone, and, yes, I realize I will never have returned to me the past 30 minutes of my life (self-dep). Ryan

SNC, IUSNC, and Thelonius Monk: How SNC Lost Their Comma

hen you do an online search for Straight No Chaser articles and videos, the results can be very confusing unless you realize that there are actually two a cappella groups using that name. A Google or Bing search will also find "straight, no chaser" as a phrase used when people say they're about to tell you the absolute truth as they know it, or it could be an alcohol reference, or the title of the jazz artist Thelonious

Monk's album and/or song, and so on. So, what's a new fan (Chaser) to do??? Originally, there was only one SNC, back in 1996 when Dan Ponce got his friends together and founded the group at Indiana University. As each of those guys graduated, they replaced themselves so the group would keep going at the school (Thank goodness! Since that's how we got Don, Ryan, Mike L., and later, Seggie and Tyler!). On April 25, 2006 now a notable moment in a

cappella and general music historyRandy Stine uploaded the original group's concert video of "The 12 Days of Christmas" to YouTube to celebrate their upcoming ten year reunion concert at the university. It surprised everyone by going viral and Craig Kallman, the CEO of Atlantic Records, called Randy on New Year's Day 2008 and offered them a record deal, which they signed on March 29, 2008 and poof! Now we have two groups; one that's still

going strong as an Indiana University collegiate group, and the other a hugely successful professional group known as "Atlantic Records' Straight No Chaser." The best way to find anything by Atlantic Records SNCmusic, videos, concert tickets, merchandise, etc.is by visiting SNCmusic.com. Once you've gone through all of the official blog posts, photos and videos, check out the site discussion board to find things such as

collections of many of the fans' favorite YouTube videos, until you are more familiar with the names and faces of the ten guys in the professional group. Because of SNC's pioneering policies regarding concert photography and video, a lot of the Chasers have captured some amazing moments on film. If you're looking for something in particular, don't be shy just ask! Post your question on the site and someone will be happy to point you in the right direction. There's a lot of great stuff out there and we love to share! (Some might say we like to share a bit too much,

but that's a debate for another article...) Fans looking for the current Indiana University SNC group should visit IUSNC.com. If you want tickets to a show, make sure you have the correct SNC, since both groups sell tickets and do performances. For example, the group singing at the Super Bowl Village in February is "Indiana Universitys SNC"a fact that not all of the articles are making clear (possibly because they also don't know there are two groups). Charlie Mechling is generally blamed for, uh,

credited with suggesting the name "Straight No Chaser." In his November 2010 SNC Fan Chat interview, Charlie readily admits to stealing it from Thelonious Monk's famous jazz piece because they needed a name in order to perform at their first show a dance marathon. "...Once we said it and once we used it that night on stage it was just perfect. And I can't take all of the credit, it's all Thelonious Monk, but... It's worked so far." Walt agrees; he has said that they actually finalized their name while standing in the parking lot before the marathon. If you look at the

title of the album/song, you'll see that it's actually called "Straight, No Chaser" with a comma. So, what happened to the comma? Well, the simple answer is that Randy lost it. He discovered that they couldn't legally register the name with the comma because it already belonged to Thelonious Monk. So Randy dropped or "lost" it and they became the band we know and love today as Atlantic Records' "Straight No Chaser" or "SNC."

*Editors Note: Due to the increasing confusion between the two groups, the group formerly known as IUSNC or Indiana Universitys Straight No Chaser has changed its name to Another Round, as of late April 2012. IU freshman Jonny Trubshaw told the Indiana Daily Student that there was some apprehension at first, since the groups name is closely tied to the groups identity. But musical director TJ Breen stressed that the undergraduate group will continue on the same legacy and traditions of the original group. To read more about the name change, visit Indiana Daily Students article here: www.idsnews.com/news/story.aspx?id=87037. SNCQUARTERNOTES.BLOGSPOT.COM 27

O Canada
BY JANA BARNES
If you were looking for another concert (or three) to take in on Straight No Chasers Spring 2012 tour, there might not have been a more beautiful location to consider than the trio of March concerts in British Columbia, Canada. Straight No Chaser played the Royal Theatre in Victoria on March 13, the Port Theatre in Nanaimo on March 14 and Vancouvers Vogue Theatre on March 15. Beautiful British Columbia is continually ranked among the best places to live, work and vacation, not only in Canada, but in the world. Whether or not Straight No Chaser is in the area, British Columbia is a destination not to be missed.

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA

www.tourismvictoria.com www.rmts.bc.ca/royaltheatre The first of the three concerts was at the Royal Theatre in Victoria, BC on March 13. Located at 805 Broughton Street, the 1400 seat theatre first opened in 1913 and is one of the National Historic Sites of Canada. Those venturing to Victoria for the first time should also be sure to check out Inner Harbor. Ferry tours are available or visitors may stroll along the harbor promenade. From there, visitors can see the citys iconic and historic Fairmont Empress Hotel located at 721 Government Street. The Empress opened in 1908 and was originally built for the Canadian-Pacific Railroad Company. British Columbias Parliament Buildings are a short stroll away on Belleville Street a notable sight after dark because they are outlined with more than 3,300 white lights. Many museums and cultural centers grace downtown Victoria. The Maritime Museum of British Columbia, 30 SNC QUARTER NOTES located at 28 Bastion Square, celebrates the regions long seafaring history with exhibits and films. The Royal British Columbia Museum, 675 Belleville Street, celebrates the provinces rich heritage, including an extensive First Peoples Gallery. Also near downtown is Canadas oldest Chinatown, featuring many shops and restaurants, as well as Canadas narrowest street, Fan Tan Alley. Originally a private walkway, it evolved into the home of offices and retail shops. At its narrowest point, the street is only about a yard wide. For those who enjoy outdoor activities, Victoria has been nicknamed the recreational capital of British Columbia with its many opportunities for biking, hiking, boating, golf and whale-watching. British Columbias temperate climate makes many of these activities available nearly year-round.

NANAIMO, BRITISH COLUMBIA

www.tourismnanaimo.com www.porttheatre.com On March 14, Straight No Chaser played the Port Theatre, located at 125 Front Street on Nanaimos waterfront. By far the newest venue that SNC visited of the Western British Columbia trio of concerts, it opened in 1998. The 800 seat venue was constructed to have excellent acoustics and sightlines, as well as an intimate feel. Nanaimo, located on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island, is the third oldest city in British Columbia and boasts one of the longest urban shorelines in Canada. Extensive outdoor activities await visitors, including many miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing and many family-friendly beaches. Nanaimo also has many world-class scuba diving opportunities among several vessels sunk in area waters just for this purpose. For those seeking a little history of the Nanaimo area, be sure to visit the Nanaimo Museum, located at 100 Museum Way, near the citys waterfront. Moved to this location in 2008, the museum houses exhibits about the regions history from its time as the home of the Snunymuxw people through its era as a coal boomtown in the mid-19th century and beyond. The museum also oversees the Bastion, a landmark of the Nanaimo skyline. Originally constructed by the Hudsons Bay Company in 1853 as a fort, it now serves as a museum, preserving important Nanaimo history. Also be sure to check out the tasty local confection known as Nanaimo bars. These sweet treats are available in a variety of forms (Nanaimo bar martini, anyone?) from many local eateries.

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA

www.tourismvancouver.com www.voguetheatre.com Straight No Chaser performed at the Vogue Theatre, 918 Granville Street, on March 15. Those who visit the theatre will note its large neon sign and Art Deco styling which has made it a landmark of Vancouvers theatre district. Like Victorias Royal Theatre, the Vogue is also a National Historic Site of Canada. Originally opened in 1941, the 1100 seat theatre is unique in that it was constructed to be both a movie theatre and a live performance venue. Noted for many years as one of the worlds most livable cities, Vancouver is an international city where more than 50 percent of residents do not count English as their first language. It boasts North Americas third largest Chinatown and Canadas only Classical Chinese garden. Scenic vistas are everywhere in British Columbias largest city, from the iconic Canada Place with its towering white sails to the nearly 1000 acre Stanley Park. For a panoramic view of the citys attractions, visit the observation deck at Vancouver Lookout, 555 West Hastings Street. Many museums dot the Vancouver landscape, but those wishing to get a taste of local art can check out the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art, 639 Hornby Street, featuring works by the late Northwest Coast aboriginal artist, as well as rotating exhibits and performances. Located in Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre is one of North Americas largest and best aquariums. Visitors can attend regularly scheduled shows featuring marine animals and narrated by aquarium staff. Those looking to do a little shopping will want to explore the Granville Island Public Market, located on the south shore of the False Creek neighborhood. The reinvigorated industrial area is overflowing with locally created foods and crafts for sale. Also for those who like to shop or window shop, Vancouvers Robson Street offers many high end shops of both well-known names and funky independent retailers. Robson Street between Burrard and Jervis Streets is an eclectic mix of shopping, ethnic dinning and people watching. Like other locations in British Columbia, Vancouvers climate makes it a mecca for those seeking outdoor adventure. Biking, kayaking, hiking, paragliding and wind surfing are just a few of the activities available for the outdoor sports enthusiast in the immediate Vancouver area. Many skiing opportunities exist around the Vancouver area as well, including world-class skiing about an hour north of the city at the Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort.

So, if you ever plan to see Straight No Chaser when theyre back in Canada, take a little time to also take in some of the beautiful and interesting sites in western British Columbia. There is something for everyone in British Columbia.

PITCH PERFECT
Its no secret that a cappella music is starting to find its way to mainstream culture. Television has become highly saturated with a cappella, what with a plethora of commercials, the Warblers on Glee, and The Sing-Off (#SaveTheSingOff). Weve even seen a bit of a cappella in movies; the viral trailer for Despicable Me 2 has the minions singing in three part harmony. But it looks like a cappella will have a whole movie to itself this fall. Pitch Perfect, set to release on October 5th of this year, is based on a book written by Mickey Rapkin of the same name (though the screenplay is not by Rapkin, but by Kay Cannon). According to IMDB, the film is A comedy set in the middle of a war between rival a cappella groups and centered on a rebellious girl who joins one of the groups as an escape from her unhappy life at school. It will feature Anna Kendrick in the lead role, along with Rebel Wilson, Adam Devine, Alexis Knapp, and Brittany Snow.

released by Sony states, The Chinese version of The Sing-Off will consist of 16 episodes including four one-hour casting shows and 12 80-90-minute studio shows, which will air on Shenzhen Satellite TV. I dont know about you, but Im actually really intrigued by the casting shows. Id really like to see what the process is like for selecting contestants. I guess thats what Deke meant when he said on Facebook and Twitter that he was going to have a bunch of screen time! It looks like theres a lot of international interest in The Sing-Off, with versions of the show in France, the Netherlands, and China. VOCAL NATION
Its the official CAL festival, coming to Washington, DC on July 13-15! Whats CAL, you ask? It stands for the Contemporary A Cappella League. Founded in 2007, CAL is a network of professional a cappella groups (postcollegiate) that hail from the US and Canada. VoCAL Nation is an a cappella festival similar to SoJam, but

As a member of a collegiate a cappella group, the ICCAs are something that I pay close attention to. (For those of you who dont know, ICCA stands for International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, and ICHSA stands for International Championship of High School A Cappella.) This years ICCA champions are the SoCal VoCals from the University of Southern California, with the UCLA Scattertones taking second and All the Kings Men from Kings College placing third. I WAS EXCITED to get this book and began reading it the day it came in the mail. Unfortunately, life intervened and I didnt get to finish it until a little while later, while on the plane to Marathon Key for vacation in sunny Florida. The book is about the a cappella community at a small college facing budget cuts, which is something that I think every school is now facing, and because of this, one or more groups funded by the school will be cut. It is also a work of fiction, with heroes, villains, drama (yeah, lots of drama), and a love triangle/quadrilateral of sorts: all the things you need for a successful novel. I was pleasantly surprised at how fast and good of a read it was. It caught my attention right off the bat, held it, and kept me reading all the way though, and for me, thats not an easy thing to achieve. If I can figure out the end by the first chapter (which in a way I did and did not), I put the book down. The characters are three dimensional, if sometimes somewhat predictable, but their quirks make them far less cookie-cutter and much more entertaining. The descriptions of a cappella singing are interesting and insightful to nonsingers, and I often found myself enjoying those parts of the novel more than the drama at times, but Im a music geek anyway, since I spend a lot of time listening to a cappella music. The love story is complicated and fairly typical, but again the characters make it more realistic. I enjoyed the twist on the bad girl wants the guy first for other reasons, but falls for him anyway motif. In a nutshell, its a fun, fast-paced read that kept me interested throughout the whole novel. The story and characters are engaging and the setting of a college campus was perfectly portrayed. I am excited to read the sequel!

38 SNC QUARTER NOTES WINTER 2011/SPRING 2012

Dear #blameCarla
BY CARLA RODRIGUEZ
Views and advice in this column are not necessarily those of the rest of the QN staff, SNC, or anyone else really. Taking this seriously may result in bad things happening BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Dear #blameCarla, When I get excited at a concert, I have trouble taking pictures/video of the concerts and not drooling over the camera and my clothes at the same time. How do I keep from ruining my stuff? -It's A Personal Problem Dear Personal, I hear ponchos do wonders for the clothes you may get wet, and as for your cameras, I suggest a nice watertight case or an underwater camera. Furthermore, keep on supply a handy assortment of rags, bibs, mops and buckets for easy clean up after the shows. Hope this helps! The Poncho Queen, blameCarla communications. Never fear, we all sound like that! As for the fainting, keep something or someone around that can catch you when you do faint! Fallingly, blameCarla Dear NOT in a Hair Band, I would suggest a large pair of scissors, or, if in the case of too much hairspray, a set of electric hedge trimmers would work VERY well.. However, many theaters frown heavily upon fire in their establishment, so lighting them up would be bad. Cuttingly, blameCarla

Dear #blameCarla, I know that going to an SNC show is fun... But how much bail money do you need for when its over? Worried About Finances Dear Worried I would suggest a bond of no less than $50,000, which may be needed to cover any and all damages from #shenanigans resulting from Chaserantics at any normal show. Of course, should I be there, any glassware is not covered in said money... Also keep handy all police, fire and ambulance service numbers for anything that might go awry. Enjoy your poverty! From the pokey, blameCarla

Dear #blameCarla, I know a lot of my fellow Chasers are easy targets for procrastination. What do you suggest to help cure this horrible disease? ~Anonymous Procrastinator Dear Anonymous (we really know who you are...) Procrastinator, I'll tell you tomorrow. Your pal, blameCarla

Dear #blameCarla, I have problems in the M&G line saying what I want to and not sounding like a babbling two-year-old as soon as the guys look at me. Help! What can I do to sound like a mature, sensible fan with intelligent questions, and not faint on sight of them in close proximity? Thanks in advance! Dazed and Confused Dear Dazed, Just give it up. Sounding flustered, babbling, and being unable to form sentences is normal for those who get in the M&G line. I hear the guys are very good at interpreting said form of

Dear #blameCarla, Every time I try to take good pictures at an SNC concert, someone with HUGE 80s hair sits in front of me. What should I do? Sincerely, NOT in a Hair Band

A Fond Farewell to the SNC TwitterWars

BY SARA DOWLING
WITH THE COMPLETION of #RvsR #Raceto2000, attention shifted to the next epic race in the making - none other than Tyler vs. Charlie, aka #TvsC #CvsT #Raceto1000! August 1st: Tyler gained his 900th follower a mere 14 minutes before Charlie also crossed into the 900s. The next few weeks promised to be nothing but exciting! Charlie held a small lead for the next two weeks, always within 5 or so ahead. August 24th: They tied at 950! But then Tyler started slowly inching into the lead. August 31st: Charlie tweeted, "Tyler and I are coming down to the wire to 1000, let's make it happen at the same time for one massive 1000 Follower Party!!" Hey, I'm all for a party, but "let's make it happen at the same time"? Did Charlie forget that he was in a race, or was he up to #shenanigans? Hmmm... During September, Tyler's lead held steady until at last, just after 9am on September 28th, Tyler was declared the winner!!! To celebrate, that evening Tyler had a #SNCTyler1000Party where he graciously answered questions on Twitter for 2 hours! It was a lot of funthanks, Tyler! Thank you also to Dottie for compiling the entire Q&A on the SNCmusic.com discussion boards: tinyurl.com/Tyler1000party. Charlie reached 1000 followers just a few days later. October 4th he tweeted, "Thanks to all 1k of you who care enough to not UNfollow me! As a thanks, I'm having @SNCmusic record new tracks in LA just to celebrate 1k!" #SNCFunFact: The week of October 3rd, 2011 SNC was in LA recording tracks for Six Pack: Vol 2. Haha! Oh, Charlie... So, okay, I can hear you asking the big question. No, not that one, I mean the BIG question: How did Blake, aka "The Lighting Guy" get mixed up in the Twitter Wars? I found out through Blake's SNC FanChat interview that Charlie had been asking him why he wasn't involved. And when I say "asking him," I mean Charlie had told Blake not to bother joining in because he could never catch up to Charlie. Blake said he WINTER 2011/SPRING 2012 thought Charlie seemed worried that "The Lighting Guy" could eventually overtake him. And that's why Blake officially joined the Twitter Wars on June 29th. Go for it, Lloyd! Follow that dream! Tyler vs. Charlie was the last race I called as I had decided to bring the #SNCTwitterWars to an end. It wasn't an easy decision, but it had been a great year and somehow it seemed like that was long enough. I'd just like to say "Thank you!" to the guys and the Chasers for playing along with a wacky idea! It will forever be one of my favorite memories. Side note: I have stopped officially tracking the follower counts, but using what @StarstruckCanuk has dubbed my "Twitter Wars intuition" I caught Walt's follower count just a few minutes before he crossed into the 2000's on December 14th at noon. Congratulations, Walt! Also, Randy reached 3000 followers on January 8th, the first of the guys to do so. Congratulations, Randy!

Quickfire Q&A
BY CARLA RODRIGUEZ

QUICKFIRE QUESTION #1:

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be? Audrey Hepburn AMANDA I was going to say Kate Middleton, not because I have a thing for William, but because it would be cool to see how the totally elite live. On the other hand, maybe someone rich but not paparazzi-hounded. S I would trade places with Sherlock Holmes because he seems to always have everything figured out before he even realizes it!! KATHLEEN Person who drives a tour bus. Doesn't have to be SNC's tour bus, just any tour bus. If you've ever seen the movie My Life In Ruins, you'd understand. ...Or if you currently drive a tour bus. CHRISTINA Sandra Bullock in The Proposal. ANGIE Guinevere, from King Arthurs court. It might be neat to see that time period LISA Rick Mercer KAREN 42 SNC QUARTER NOTES

This is the hardest one of all because there are so many things I want to do in life that it's almost like I would love to trade places with anyone. Since I would have to pick one, I would pick Gene Kelly. I would love to dance with the passion he did. CHRISTA I've thought about this one for several days and can't come up with an answer. I wouldn't want to "trade places with" someone and make them have to deal with my weird life for a week. LOL! However, I think I might enjoy living Katharine Hepburns life for a week. (Now, if it doesn't have to be a human person, I'd like to be a cat for a week.) KELLY John, my riding instructor that Ive known since I was 10 Not famous at all, but I have always looked up to him as a father and role model. He taught me all I know about horses and I have always wished that my personality was more like his. He is very, very personable and well-liked by everyone and if I could have that kind of impact on someone else like he has had on me, then life would be pretty darn good! KRISTIN K. I would trade places with my best friend Martha for a week so that I could have her amazing skill to play piano! MARIA

Wow, I really had to think about this one. A person that holds drug affected babies; I know it sounds odd, but that is something that is very near to my heart. My three adopted little sisters are all drug affected. BRITTAIN SNC bus driver. D. WHITE Im probably showing my geeky side, but Id like to see what itd be like to be Spider-Man for a week. Although I could probably do without all the people-trying-to-kill-me thing, playing around with his superpowers would be AWESOME. SHAINA

QUICKFIRE QUESTION #2:

What is your favorite quote? "I just like smiling, smiling's my favorite," from Elf, or "What is necessary is never unwise," from Spock's father in the latest Star Trek movie. CHRISTINA You can't change the cards you are dealt, just how you play the hand." (Randy Pausch) AMANDA Genesis 1:3: And God said, Let there be light; and there was light. S

If it takes a hen and a half a day and a half to lay an egg and a half, how long does it take a monkey with a wooden leg to kick all of the seeds out of a dill pickle? ANGIE Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it. KRISTIN Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music. (Sergei Rachmaninov) CHRISTA "Everyone has a purpose, even if it is to be a bad example." KAREN "There's no crying in baseball." D. WHITE "With everything that has happened to you, you can either feel sorry for yourself or treat what has happened as a gift. Everything is either an opportunity to grow or an obstacle to keep you from growing. You get to choose." BRITTAIN Dream as if there were no Limitations. Sing as if no one was Listening. Dance as if no one was Watching. Live as if every day was your Last. SHAINA

"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." (I believe a wise guy named Solomon wrote that!) KATHLEEN Ah! There is nothing like staying at home, for real comfort. (Jane Austen) MARIA Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. KELLY

Favorite book has to be Princess Bride. I read it and hear Peter Falk's voice. It just happens. CHRISTINA I love Terry Goodkind, and his Sword of Truth novels. My favorite one is probably the first, Wizards First Rule. TRACI I have so many favorites so this was a hard question, but I am going with the one that actually stirred my interest in reading as a child, and that would be Laura Ingalls Wilder who wrote the Little House series. KRISTIN My favorite author is Ted Dekker. My favorite book of his is Immanuel's Veins. CHRISTA Probably Nicholas Sparks, favorite book not sure. BRITTAIN Catherine Coulter her FBI series is good. CINDY Agatha Christie Hard to pick a favorite book. KATHLEEN Dean Koontz, Lightning KELLY Tie Jane Austen (Jane Eyre) and CS Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia) KAREN SNCQUARTERNOTES.BLOGSPOT.COM

QUICKFIRE QUESTION #3:

Who is your favorite author and what is your favorite work BY that author? (This is in memory of my favorite author who inspired me to read more books and to write, the fabulous Anne McCaffrey; may she rest in peace.) Not sure I have a favourite author per se, but a book that had an effect on me was Life of Pi by Yann Martel. ANGIE Harry Potter was my LIFE. J.K. Rowling is a genius. My favorite of the series is probably the last one, Deathly Hallows; she blew my mind with how she ended it all. SHAINA C.S. Lewis... I love The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe. ALLIE

George RR Martin. Game of Thrones LILLIAN My favorite author is Jane Austen. My favorite work is Emma. MARIA Elizabeth Peters Amelia Peabody series (Couldn't pick just one book!) AMANDA

SNC guy: Shark Me: My family members liken me to a monkey. SNC guy: Apparently, his family called him monkey, too. Me: Cat SNC guy: Chameleon Me: Dolphin SNC guy: Monkey

Shaina, lol. The one who lifts the gates at the start of the greyhound race. I think I can actually answer this Elvis did. (Hes still alive, right?) The cats because everyone knows theyre smart enough to stay inside and sleep. Probably Ryan or Seggie.

QUICKFIRE QUESTION #4:

Which animal do you think describes you best? Then pick a guy from SNC and pick an animal you think describes HIM best. DO NOT tell us which guy you chose! Make us guess! (To be different, I am NOT disclosing what Chaser said which answer Only I will know!) Me: Dog/Wolf SNC guy: Bear cub Me: Ive been called a lot of animal names in the past SNC guy: Panda Bear Me: a dog SNC guy: What animal is the cutest? I am just joking; a dog. Me: Cat SNC guy: Golden Retriever Dog best describes me. Peacock best describes this SNC guy.

Me: A bear, because I was made to hibernate in the winter. SNC guy: A monkey. Specific reason. Me: I think a mouse describes me best. SNC guy: He can best be described as a butterfly! Me: Im going to go with tigers. SNC guy: I would say a lion.

Jerome did! And that would be me Duh The Baha Men, of course! The cats did, of course, so theyd have some peace and quiet in the house. It was Carla, wasnt it? I mean, dont they blame everything on Carla?

QUICKFIRE QUESTION #5:

Who DID let the dogs out??? (I am not disclosing what Chaser said which answer!) THE. Jerome! Seggie let them loose on all the cats in the world. The cat. Pretty sure it was Don Nottingham.
