CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Cal Ripken Sr. Foundations Youth Development Park June 12, 2012

Construction of the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundations Youth Development Park is scheduled to begin June 19, 2012. The Longfellow Park will be closed to allow for the construction of the new ballfield, dugouts, and associated landscaping. A drawing of the new ballfield is shown to the right. The first step of the work will be to place a cap on top of soils that have chemical contamination. The soil has chemical contamination because more than 50 years ago, much of the area was a creek and was filled with incinerator ash and other waste material so the land could be built on. The cap will be made of multiple layers, including plastic-like fabric, gravel, clean soil, and asphalt. The baseball field will have an artificial turf surface The multiple layer cap will prevent anyone from coming into contact with the contaminated soil beneath. This plan has been approved by the State of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEEP), the State Department of Public Health (DPH), as well as the City of Bridgeports Health Department. During the soil capping work, there will be continuous air monitoring to make sure that contaminated soil and dust does not spread beyond the work zone. Air monitoring equipment will be set up at the boundaries of the park. There is also a health and safety plan to deal with any soil or dust problems that happen during the construction project. This plan will make sure that workers and nearby residents are protected during the project. DEEP and DPH have approved the air monitoring and health and safety plan. The soil capping part of the project is expected to take two weeks. Then it will take about ten weeks to build the ballpark. Updates will be provided at the end of each week of the remedial phase.
