Project Title: Land Art and Site Specific Sculture Created by: Jared Ward Class: Canyons CMaP

2012 Project Description Land art is a category of modern art where earth materials are the primary medium used to create the work. Site specific sculpture a work created for a specific site where the landscape or environment are important to the meaning or message of the art work. Works are typically larger in scale and are meant to compete and connect with their environment. This project will help students understand the sculptural work that can be found throughout Utah and the surrounding areas. My goal is to increase or enhance community awareness of large-scale land art. Also, teaching students about these works will help them think outside of the box of traditional art making and viewing. Utah Museum of Fine Art Utah Arts Council University of Utah College of Fine Arts Students will visit and/or learn about various earth works or site specific sculptures. They will collect data about each location including GPS coordinates, plant and animal life, water and soil sample, and other data to determine possible reasons why each location was chosen by the artist for their art work. Standard 2 Students will find meaning by analyzing, criticizing, and evaluating sculpture. Objective 1 Critique sculpture. a. Analyze sculptures according to use of art elements and principles. b. Examine the functions of sculpture. c. Interpret sculptures. What elements of this work contribute to its meaning? How does the location/environment of the sculpture affect your perception of an art work? How have environmental factors changed or influenced this work over time? How do you think the environment will impact this work in the future? (see attached.) Map of art locations with GPS points, and other data embedded into each point using ArcGIS.com. Class presentation on lessons learned throughout this project.
