After hearing several mem-bers of the public mentionthat they had no idea a meet-ing had been scheduled to dis-cuss the approval of fundingfor an artificial turf field at thehigh school, Haddonfield Com-missioner Jeff Kasko agreedthat the process needed to bepossibly revamped to providemore time for borough citizensto see what’s happening in up-coming meetings.Three members of the audi-ence complained at a recentrescheduled borough meetingthat they had no idea that theborough was discussing thepossibility of spending morethan $350,000 for an artificialturf field at a meeting on May22. Pro-turf supporters domi-nated the meeting, but asMayor Tish Colombi did pointout, a number of anti-turf citi-zens did speak up at the meet-ing.Haddonfield residents MaryFagan and Sherry Gallagherboth argued that it was diffi-cult to obtain informationabout upcoming Haddonfieldmeetings and that the agendasfor commissioner meetingsare either posted late on theday of the meeting or in somecases not at all. Gallagher said

A three-foot long alligatorwas seen in the Cooper Rivernear Oaklyn about two weeksago. Definitely a strange sight. But for residents who havelived in the borough for thepast five years, it might jog afew memories of an action-packed month in Haddonfieldin 2007.Maybe, just maybe, MayorTish Colombi, said the caimanthat was caught recently couldbe the progeny of the “alliga-tor” that was spotted in Hop-kins Pond five years ago.“It could have floated outthrough the pipes into theCooper River,” Colombi joked. It’s been five years since anodd wildlife story caught theattention of the borough. OnMay 11, 2007, a passerby walk-ing along Hopkins Pond sawthe hard-to-believe scene of athree- to four-foot alligatorthrashing about in the waterat 9:50 a.m.The citizen quickly calledthe police and the departmentnotified the Camden CountyDepartment of Parks.Sgt. William Draham, of theCamden County Park PoliceDepartment, responded to thecaller. He quickly drove to thepark and found the reptilefeasting on a goose in thepond, according to The Sun’s

Headed to the big leagues
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Haddonfield Sun
John Walter, a 2009 graduate of Haddonfield Memorial HighSchool, is going to the big leagues.Well, he’s actually flying intoBurlington, N.C., right now, buthe’s taking the first step on a longroad to Major League Baseball.Walter, a powerful right-hand-ed pitcher for Penn State Univer-sity, has decided to forgo his sen-ior year at the university afterbeing drafted in the 29th round of the MLB draft by the Kansas CityRoyals.“It was crazy. I was in theNorthwoods League in Minneso-ta, playing for the Mankato Moon-dogs. I was going to one of mygames and right after it was over Isaw I had a message from a scout.I called the scout from the Royalsand he said that he got me,” Wal-ter said from an airport in NorthCarolina. “I had to drive fromMinnesota to Chicago with mydad, and then we drove fromChicago to New Jersey. The scoutcame to my house, and I signedwith the Royals. I’ve been all overthese past few weeks; it’s nuts.”The six-foot, five-inch, 205-pound power pitcher was pickednumber 883 overall, on the thirdday of the draft, June 6. Walterwent 2-8 with a low 4.00 ERA in2012, but picked up about 85strikeouts in 80 innings of work, averaging more than a “K” an in-ning.He said that teams were callinghim before the draft and he wasanticipating being picked any-time from the eighth round on.The Atlanta Braves, the Cincin-nati Reds, the Minnesota Twins, the Miami Marlins, and the Seat-tle Mariners all showed interest-ed in Walter, but ultimately theRoyals pulled the trigger.

she didn’t see the agenda postedfor the turf meeting at all on theday of the meeting. Kasko said itwas posted at 5 p.m. that night, certainly not enough time to dis-seminate the information to thepublic at large.“It was not publicized ade-quately by the borough, you’re ab-solutely correct,” Kasko said.“The borough failed to adequate-ly prepare the public about thisissue. We failed and it’s some-thing that needs to be discussed.”A week after the meeting,Kasko said that he will likely pro-pose a change to when the work-shop and commissioner meetingagendas are posted to the bor-ough website.“I will suggest we publicize ouragenda and everything on thatagenda at least three days in ad-vance of a meeting. That will in-clude the agenda for our work ses-sion meetings, the commissionermeetings, and any ordinance orresolution that will be consideredor any item up for discussion,”Kasko said. “I’ll propose that wesend it to the local print and on-line media sites and post it on theborough website.”For a Tuesday night commis-sioner meeting, the agenda wouldhave to be posted the Friday be-fore the meeting date under thisproposal.Borough Clerk Deanna Bennettis in charge of posting agendasonline. She was not in attendanceat the Thursday, June 14 meeting. The agenda for the meeting wasstill not posted on the website asof Thursday, June 21.After the meeting, Mayor TishColombi defended the borough’spractice of posting the agendasonline several hours prior to eachmeeting.“There is no requirement fromthe state about when anythingneeds to be posted. There is no re-quirement at all. The agendas forthe meetings change sometimesright until we come in at 7 p.m.for the small work session. If something new comes in or isdeleted, it needs to be changed be-fore the meeting,” Colombi said.“Sometimes if Deanna feels thatthey’re accurate she’ll put themon our website that day. Jeff saidthey should be up Friday, butthere’s no way that can be done. There’s too much stuff going onand changing for the meeting, sothe agenda it would be in flux.”At the meeting, Kasko said thatthe Haddonfield Turf Committeedidn’t provide him with any in-formation or project documenta-tion about the proposed turf fieldprior to the May 22 meeting. Hesaid he was handed a piece of paper “10 minutes” before themeeting on May 22.Commissioner Ed Borden dis-agreed and said Kasko had metprior to the meeting with the turf chairman Joe Del Duca and hedidn’t raise any complaints aboutthe project.Kasko confirmed that he metwith Del Duca but said that noproject reports, environmental re-ports, or official documentationwas provided to him or madeavailable to the public at the May22 turf meeting.“I told him it sounded good. Iwasn’t given any paper; I was ex-pecting that all of this would bemade available for members of the public,” Kasko said at themeeting.Kasko went on and said thisissue is about the public havinginformation at their disposal.Colombi defended the bor-ough’s dissemination of informa-tion to the public and said this isone of the “most open govern-ments I’ve ever experienced.”“We are not doing a poor job. Ithink we are doing everythingthat is asked of us and more. Some of the obligation falls onyou (the public) to keep up withthe work and information,”Colombi said.
