REPRESENTATIONS OF

TEENAGERS

UK Film
KiDULTHOOD
 My main Focus is on the movie ‘KiDULTHOOD’ , I've briefly analysed the YouTube trailer (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdoKD4gTQ2c) and identified how teenagers are represented in this.
 I first notice this tense and eerie kind of music before any image is shown, this keeps the audience in
suspense and focused for any images that could follow. Then you hear the diegetic sound and image of
a DJ mixing, this immediately informs the audience of the genre by this hinted party lifestyle. This also
ties in with the quick flashing close-ups of a girl smoking and a raised gun, the close-up focuses on
these props which builds on this impression of a youth-orientated film. This brings me on to the sound in
this trailer, a few other significant things i heard is rapping, screaming and slang. The screaming is
associated with the violence shown in the trailer and rapping is a common genre of music targetted at
the youth. From the script we here slang like ‘dizzy’, ‘blad’ and ‘bang you up’, so pretty much all of the
sound and music fits in with this stereotypical teenage theme.
 The narrative also included stories like pregnancy, this teenage motherhood is currently an issue in
society as young pregnancies are rising. Similarly the youth being involved in crime is also a huge
problem in society like knife crime etc, there are many scenes of violence and illegal behaviour like
stealing and fights which is emphasized by the props used like guns and bats which is used many times
throughout the trailer. Also alcoholism , drug abuse and sex is highlighted in the trailer being
accompanied by its props which is used as signifiers. This is reinforcing the stereotypes of teenagers
today which have caused some moral panics in society today. However many argue about how real this
impression of teenagers are.
 Stereotypically these teenagers can also be identified by their significant/common clothing. This is shown
in the costume of the cast, some include chunky jewellery, hoodies, caps and sports logos. I also noticed
how the cast is mainly, if not all white or black. These races are commonly shown and targetted to be the
trouble-makers.
 From what ive noticed, representations are created through repeated impressions of stereotyped
characters and this is formed with everything that goes with it like dialogue, costume, narratives etc.
Audiences and Control
 From my analysis on KiDULTHOOD, i think the film can easily engage with a wide
audience demographic , many teenagers may bond with the narrative and trailers
shown and some may be angered by it, but either way it would attract them to watch it
out of curiosity and interest. Also as teenagers are a huge critical debate in society and
are constantly in the news, adults may also be interested as well as different races,
males and females.
 Producers and Directors are in control of how someone is represented as they have
the power to alter and form the characters and narratives, this could also be favoured
by the Marxist theory as the bourgeoisie (in this context the directors and producers)
are in control of everything and everyone that has a lower status. Therefore this
representation could be bias and used to benefit themselves. This is if the audience is
hegemonic, and from past examples most of the audiences, especially the youth are
hegemonic and believe what they are being shown displaying the great power and
control of the dominant group.
