A companys value lies between the ears of its employees

Jack Welch of GE

Too often, attrition or staff turnover figures are used as a statistic to justify certain means or to compare one organisation to another. While human resource statistics most certainly contribute positively to the quantification of various measurables, the human factor is far more complex. Here are a few tips which may prove useful to ensure the right people stay with your organisation and that they do not leave prematurely or for the wrong reasons (and these tips are not new, just essential to bear in mind). } Ensure all new employees attend a procedural and social induction to the company } Discuss the demands and requirements of the job } Introduce and familiarise them with their new surroundings } Hold regular chats to see how things are going } Provide ample opportunities for communication } Do not smother them } Appoint a mutually acceptable work buddy/ mentor } Clarify career progression expectations } Compile a structured new employee orientation programme. And, above all, do what managers are paid to do: communicate by listening, motivate by supporting and celebrate by sharing the small achievements which lead to the big successes!
