Health and safety committees and representatives play a vital role in preventing workrelated injuries and diseases, and

are an important part of what is called the internal responsibility system. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), an agency of the Government of Canada, was created in 1978 by an Act of Parliament. The act was based on the belief that all Canadians had "...a fundamental right to a healthy and safe working environment." Health Canada is the department of the government of Canada with responsibility for national public health, through its Emergency Preparedness and Occupational Health Directorate (EPOHD), provides national leadership, develop health policy and advance best practices in the workplace. There is also the Canada Labor Code, an Act of Parliament of the Canadian government, to consolidate certain statutes respecting labor. The objective of the code is to facilitate production by controlling strikes & lockouts, occupational safety and health, and some employment standards.
