An Original Suite was Jacob's first work for the Concert Band world and was completed in 1928.

The suite begins with a March and is introduced by a snare drum solo. The movement ends as it began with an unaccompanied snare drum, and final fortissimo chord. The Intermezzo opens with solos throughout the band for seventeen measures and then the whole ensemble comes in and ends with a somber A-minor triad. The Finale begins with a poly-meter: the clarinets and saxophones play in a feel of 6/8 while the rest of the band is in 2/4 feel. This movement finishes with a flourish of woodwind arpeggios to the final accented chords. Gordon Jacob studied at the Royal College of Music in London under an array of teachers, among them, Vaughn Williams. He later than became a professor at the Royal College of Music for 40 years, while there he was awarded the Fellow of the Royal College of Music, and an honorary fellow of the Royal Academy of Music. He arranged the National Anthem with Fanfare for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, which was also used for the most recent royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. By the time Gordon Jacob had died at the age of 89, he had written over 700 pieces of music and several books.
