Hi I am going to discuss the issue where the Mrt Train at the Bishan Mrt Depot.

the mass media has blamed this issue on the citizens of singapore saying that it is due to their complacency that these criminals have the confidence to commit such crimes. my stand is that they are partly correct, and that one cannot deny that some singaporeans ARE overly complacent due to the good security here in singapore and therefore they let their guards down and disregard the importance of being resilient. this is a classic case of how "too much of a good thing is never good" one indeed cannot disagree that this is partly why these criminals have the audacity to commit such crimes. however i feel that the loophole in SMRT'S security was a major factor that led to the man committing such a crime. although Civil Defence emphasises the importance of being resilient at all times, it will be quite ridiculous for us to keep a lookout at the MRT depots as security companies have already been employed to do just that. These security officers are being paid to help to ensure the safety of the citizens and it is unfair that the media is blaming in on the citizens' complacency since the latter are not being paid to guard the Depot's Security. hence I do not feel that the citizens are responsible for this issue, instead more focus should be shifted to the security companies, as they are the ones who have failed to do their jobs, the jobs that they are getting paid for. moreover, this incident happened at night and this shows that the vandal chose a time where there was least people around. this indicates that he was not completely confident that he would not get caught. i am sure that if a normal citizen was to walk by and saw someone trying to break into the MRT depot, he would have tried to stop him. therefore i feel that the media should not blame the citizens for this issue. in conclusion, however, i feel that we should end this "blame game" and instead increase the Security Level at the MRT depot. shifting the blame around will not solve the problem, it will instead cause more tension and lead to disharmony amongst the citizens of singapore.
