15 POD Essay 2 Language Language is an extremely significant and fundamental part of our daily lives. It is necessary throughout the world as communications play a very important role. Imagine a world where no one had any ways to communicate with each other. Wothout language, humanity would not be where it is today. When studying ancient civilisations, historians consider those that had a standard language as sophisticated and these cicilisations were generally at a hgher stage of development compared to those without a standard language. This tells us exactly how important language is in our daily lifestyle. Despite this, most people do not quite understand the definition of language and what exactly is a language. A language can be defined as a system of signs for encoding and decoding information. However, Since language and languages became an object of study, namely logos, by the ancient grammarians, the term has had many and different definitions. Apart from having numerous vocal languages, there are also other types of language like body language which help in bringing forth what you are trying to say. Language is also considered inter related to the idea of knowing as without languag we cannot communicate our ideas, beliefs so on. Without language, people would not have names, thus showing yet again how fundamental language is in our daily lives. Language also has its own set of problems. Firstly, a large number of people can use language to deceive others. A saleperson will always try and use language in such a way that you get the impression that his product is good. Language also has a certain amount of ambiguity in it as different people have different interpretations of a phrase. These are reasons why one has to be cautious about believing everything he hears. Another important point would be the fact that no one can give a fixed view on language as his or her view will change as time passes since he or she will see things differently. Even extremely famous philosophers are unable to give a firm definition or view of what they think language is. So language is an extremely fundamental and important part of our life without which the world would be totally different from what it is today. It is also used as a means of communicating thoughts and feelings with other people but every person interprets what you are saying differently as they do not have the same point of view as you.
